Don't forget Pele played at a time when there were no red and yellow cards. Red and yellow cards were introduced in 1970 world cup in Mexico after the disastrous Portugal (3) vs (1) Brazil match in 1966 where Pele was sent out in a body bag. In 1970 England (0) vs Brazil (1), England strategized to take Pele out of the game and sacrifice one of their players to a red card in doing so because they thought "we have better odds of winning a 10 vs 10 contest without Pele". Pele was brutally tackled throughout his life and had to be beyond exceptional on and off the ball to escape without breaking a few bones in almost any international match. Pele was a different beast altogether, he exists in a different plane, another Pele will never be born again because the selection pressures have changed in football.
@Hans Prins Ronaldo might have been a better striker than Pele (although I highly doubt that), but Pele is definitely far ahead of Ronaldo in play-making. This is also clearly shown by their jersey numbers (Pele number 10 and Ronaldo number 9). During Ronaldo's era a great number 10 played for Brazil: Rivaldo. In my opinion, he was the kingpin of Brazil's consistent success.
My mind is blown. I had no idea red and yellow cards were so recently introduced. I always assumed they had always been around, I had no idea that they had only been used in England less than 10 years before I started playing the game (in Canada) as a child. Thanks for that info Sabyasachi!
@Hans Prins I agree you don't need play-making to score goals but you need someone else to do the play-making for you to score those sick ass goals. That's why I mentioned Rivaldo.

@Hans Prins Pele by far, look at all the Soft Pens given out now, LMAO, Pele was far better than Ronaldo, who is selfish, he wont pass the ball, look at Messi and Pele's assists, they were both team first.
Pele was the GOAT, and I doubt there will ever be a greater talent.

Pelé have amazing numbers. In World cup finals: 2 games, 3 goals, 3 assists.
A true legend of the game indeed.
2 assists not 3. His Garrincha’s cross to Vavá in 1958 was deflected by a Swedish defender, not Pelé, who never touched the ball. That’s not an assist.
1958 Final: 2 G 0 A
1970 Final: 1 G 2 A
And note both of those numbers are also FIFA World Cup Final match records. 3 goals is joint most goals scored in FIFA World Cup Final matches, which Pele shares with Vava, Geoff Hurst and Zinedine Zidane. 3 goals assists is the most goals assists in FIFA World Cup Final matches which Pele holds alone.
Overall Pele is ranked number 5 highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup Finals tournaments with 12 goals scored. And ranked number 1 highest goals assister with 10 provided goals assists. The only player who has double figures for both goalscoring and goals assisting.
@@peterpereira3653 yeah, FIFA doesn’t really adhere to Opta’s standard unfortunately so they’ve got Pelé at 10 World Cup assists, including deflections and all. He’s at 8 in reality, 1 in 1958, 1 in 1962, 6 in 1970.

My point with this is not that Pele was not the best of his era, I think he probably was, but that it was definitely a lot easier to score in that era, and so many players scored a lot of goals because of that,
Look up any Top 50 list of top goalscorers and you can probably count the number of players from the modern era on your fingers, if not just one hand. Only Ronaldo, Messi, Ibra, Lewy and Suarez tend to make the cut, the rest are from past era. Does this means there are just less talented players cropping up now than ever before? The problem with Maradona was that he only was a football god for a few years, because drugs and addictions led him into failure. For stadistics, game style and conditions Pelé is the real G.O.A.T. I think the only one that gets sightly close is Messi, but it's not enough. However, Messi doesn't have great physical conditions, and that gives him some extra merit. Ronaldo is great at scoring, but he doesn't go beyond that since he isn't as complete as the other players in the list.
Brilliant! I've now subscribed.
Have you done a club champion comparison? Because many great players play in less than successful country teams but achieved a lot for their club.
Or, most successful coaches such as F Capello, C Ancelotti, J Mourinho, A Ferguson, A Wenger, O Hitzfeld, L Van Gaal.
Those Pelé numbers are 🔥
They are all amazing players! Some of the greatest of all time! However, there are no comparisons when it comes to Pelé. He practically created football art. An ambidextrous complete player, incredible ball control and game vision! He was world champion at the age of 17 in 1958! Won 3 world cups! The title "King of Football" is perfect for him.
Study a little further. Pele played among amateurs
Perfect 👏👏👏👏

Lol
messi better
If one of these guys is called Armando, then he's the GOAT by default. Forget the stats, Armando was, and still is, and will be the best ever.
Pele and messi both are legendary players
A couple of information about Pelé:
1-He won his first WC at the age of 17 y/o
2- He scored goals and provided assists with both legs, from short/medium/long distance ranges. He also scored a lot of goals by headers.
3- He played for Santos for almost his entire career. Santos declined to compete in Libertadores after its 2nd title because it would receive several invitations from Top European clubs to play friendlies that were much more profitable than the Libertadores schedule against other South American teams. Hence, Pelé only played 2 Libertadores and 2 Intercontinental cups, winning all 4.
The statistics of those friendly matches are not included in this very interesting analysis.
4-And last, but not least, Santos never had 10 times the budget of its league counterparts like Messi's Barcelona and Ronaldo's Madrid had in comparison to Malaga, Albacete, et co.
Pelé's team mates were never overwelmingly better than players in teams facing Santos.
Legend indeed
Yeah that last bit is a lie, Santos weren't overwhelmingly better than the lower end teams in their league? What?
@@Tunde....Ballack , you need to make that comparison on a AVERAGE league opponent, of course. The lower end is always trash everywhere, but in Paulista Championship, Santos had to outplay Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo and Portuguesa, all of which were located in the much richer São Paulo city.
At national level, Santos had also to play against very strong sides from Rio (Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense and Botafogo), besides Atletico and Cruzeiro (from Minas Gerais) and Grêmio and Internacional (from Rio Grande).
You cant even start comparing that competition with Malaga, Valencia, Zaragozs, Sevilla, Betis and basicaly most of Spanish league. How many Spanish championships have been won by Real Madrid and Barcelona in the last 20 years?
@@pedromcmamede6758 Oh I need to make the comparison on an average? That's why you bring up Albacete right? and it's also why you bring up the average teams in Corinthians, Palmeiras and Sao Paulo right?
You claim Santos was never overwhelmingly better than the rest when they managed to score 30 more goals, 40 more goals 50 more goals than their closest rivals in multiple seasons, if we're talking 40 more goals, then perhaps they did this for almost 5 seasons, if we're talking 20 - 30 more goals, then maybe 10 more seasons. This is more than the second, think about that. They dominated the brazilian world cup winning squad, you talk about Barca and Real winning how many in 20 years, Santos alone won 11 in 15 years in that time period, that's not a clear dominance? People talk about Bayern dominating now, and they had 12 in the last 16 years.
You should look at your argument before you start making claims, every single point you make against Messi and Ronaldo's team, Pele's team is guilty of the same, or perhaps even worse when you consider the level of competition of some of those lower teams team
@@Tunde....Ballack ,
1st of all, Paulista championship was played by 16 teams, instead of 20. That already raises the relative average quality of Santos opponents vis a vis Real Madrid and Barcelonas' in Spanish League, right?
2ndly, if Palmeiras, Corinthians, Sao Paulo and Portuguesa are part of that championship, they are also part of the overall average, right? Do you have the likes of these teams in Spanish league? Just check the history of Paulista Championship before Pele and after Pele and you will see these teams prevailing in the board. You cant even start comparing their strenght with "mighty" Athletico Madrid, Valencia or Sevilla in the spanish league before and after Ronaldo or Messi.
3rd, its not true that the late 50's and 60's Brazilian national squad was built on a Santos domination. Do your homework and research it.
4th: if you're going to guess the goal differential between Santos and other clubs, you obviously need to remove Pele's contribution to the overall numbers and add an average number to a 11th dummy Santos player in his place right? You dont want to make the case that Pele's team mates were that good using Pele's statistics against Pelé.
Well, from 1957 to 1965, Pele scored average 40.1 goals per Paulista Championship season and was the top scorer in every single one of them. That brings the case that maybe Santos overall dominance was more justified by the fact that Pelé played for them instead of playing for the competition.
5th Also, in your reply, you completely ignore the Brazilian tournments at national level, as I suggested. If Paulista championship was higher on quality than Spanish League outside Real Madrid and Barcelona, imagine Taça Brasil or Torneio Rio/Sp with Corinthians, Palmeiras, Sao Paulo and Portuguesa being added by Flamengo, Vasco, Botafogo, Fluminense and others?
So, yeah, I think I have good points and better knowledge about Brazilian football history than your biased guessing plays.
Thank you for helping to prove my point.
Pele was such a total sensation that he played "friendly" matches all over the World in his career by demand. If you count the goals he scored in those games, many against pretty strong competition, his goal total is something like 1282 goals. Also Pele retired at age 30 for 5 years until he came back to play for the Cosmos to help bring soccer to these shores. If he had played for those years his numbers would DWARF everybody else's on this list. Oh , and the "no red card "thing is HUGE. Pele was Hacked out of the 1966 world cup or Brazil probably would've won 4. Of course athletes are evolved and you have to gauge them in their respective time periods. In his time, no one could touch him. He was considered " incomparable " PELE IS GOAT

Yes 1
Difficult to choose between Pele and Messi. In Pele's club football carrer, he faced less competition than Messi whereas football was much more brutal game with very small punishments for fouls in those days. But it can safely be said that Messi is ahead of other two in terms of consistency and longevity.
you know saying "less compitition" proves you a 12y/o messi fanboi here... it doesn't even makes any sense...
according to you, after 20 years this same thing applies to messi also... 20 years later we can compare anyone with messi and will make an excuse like "messi played in an era where there was no competition" 🤡
and also if you want excuse then pele played on very bad pitches compared to nowdays pitches, but still performed better than messi and ronaldo 🥱
Lol kid, Pele made played the whole 20 year career with over 1 G+A per game every single year for 2 decades, and a from 58 to 70 he basically dominated football in the peak of his powers. Messi is the one who can keep close to Pele, not otherwise. Yes, Messi destroys every single player in the world in terms of longevity and consistency, except Pele and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It's almost impossible to determine with any certainly who was the greatest of all time. I got to see Pele play for the Cosmos when I was a young boy, and Maradona soon after. I prefer to think of the players who have brought me the most joy, rather than who may or may not have been the GOAT. I loved watching Zidane more than anyone else. What he could do with the ball at his feet was otherworldly. I also thoroughly enjoyed watching Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder play for the Dutch. Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos. Figo; Stoichkov; Hagi & a few others from that era. More recently Modric, Lewandowski, Griezmann. and others. The present and future looks very bright with some of the young English players, as well as Haaland and especially, Kylian Mbappe.
Pele lived at times when football wasn't as good as it is now. Christiano romaldo is a good player, maradona was insane talent. Messi is a player that lived in the time where legends of football played and he was a God among them. Messi is the goat of football, there is no dispute
You really havent played football before i guess. If you have ever kick a football now and compared it to the ball they used to play 20 years ago (dont need all the way back to Pele period), then u will understand what you mentioned is foolish.
In statistics, in achievement and in the way of play the game itself there no one who can compare ... Pelé 🐐
Agreed pele stats you can not compare to him
@@owenh2542 Really?
Lionel Messi no question about that fact
Considering the quality of football and goals in this era ( VAR, offside technology, Slow motion, keen foul rules) as compared to that of Pele's era ( no VAR, no offside technology, no slow motion, weak foul rules), I would say Messi is greater than Pele. Likely most of the goals scored in that era would be disallowed in this era and most actions would be considered as foul play with the technology available in football now. So being able to make this accomplishments in the face of modern tech in football, I would say Messi is the greatest
