Thanks Tom, I really appreciate your point of view and the way you explain and educate about these different features. I'll be checking out more of your videos for sure, subbed. Cheers and happy holidays!
Thanks for the perfect review, tones and moreover the 3 patches you left for us in the interweb👍🤟
his is one of the best demos I have ever seen. Thank you-Great job.
Thank you. Really helpful. Sounds great and great playing as always!
Great rundown. Thanks Tom!
I’m glad I waited it out till this showed up. Wonderful unit to achieve your sounds in your head.
OMG what a joy to hear you!
Haha I love how you sneaked in 'the lick' at 24:58.
Great video by the way, one of the only videos with the GX-100 that doesn't have crappy audio recording quality.
the lick!
If you want a full info explanation along with superb playing...Tom's the man!!
Bought one of these recently and it's easily the most useable modeler I've used in the 15 or so years since I got my first one (POD XT Live). I was able to stand up a great sound from a blank "memory" in about 5 minutes using only the touch screen...
Excellant reveiw, and as Always playing. Thanks for the easy to follow walkthrough and tips.Your patches are much appreciated.Just put 1 of these on the top of a Nu-x pedalboard. With a Boss RC-600 right below it.Used a lot of the modelers through the years. This IS the easiest to navigate on,because of the touch screen. Your patches will be getting used for sure.Best Regards..👍👍
Tom ! Well done. Thanks for all the details and education here. I have this unit and you helped me craft great tones and I'm looking at your patches as well.
I'm coming over from his boss gt-10. The only trouble I have Is replicating this one individual patch from my gt-10. It's one I originally created with the boss easytone feature years ago.
This guitarist is fantastic! Absolutely love his playing! Great demo of the Boss GX-100!
The Boss floor board multi FX are really great. I used an ME-50 for over a decade and it was really reliable and had an amazing array of sounds. Such great value too!
Hapened to me to on ME25... Sounds still good for me today...
Please share some more patches!! Your Dumble patch is one of my absolute favorites!! Thank you sir.
Very helpful. Been trying to decide between this or the GT-1000. For me the interface and lower price tag make it a better choice for me considering all the great tones you get from this unit.
The GX-100 feels like an evolution of the BOSS ME-80. Absolutely love the ME-80, going to upgrade to the GX-100
You are right and now there’s the me-90!
Just got one. It’s wonderful a pedalboard. My new happy place indeed!
lots of hints and tips in this video that I haven't seen in other videos about this device. thank you very much! btw, great playing, too 👍
I love this unit. The BOSS can handle more effects than my Helix. It is also much easier to use. A great video, thanks.
Is it sounds better than helix?
I have a Boss IR-200 and the X-Crunch is there as well. It's a fantastic amp model that works exceptionally well with a DynIR of a Soldano cab I bought for my Torpedo CAB.
Excellent tone. Thanks!
Your reviews are so SUPER valuable and just downright helpful. It's very well logically staged and the right amount of information. Really appreciate you; thank you so much!!!!!
Best demo of the GX-100
That is some amazing playing brother. I feel like I just had a guitar lesson watching this video. Thanks!
For sure. I've looked everywhere on my guitar and I just don't have some of those notes/chords! LOL :-)
Hey Tom! Great to see you back! Agreed - the modeling in the Boss stuff is underrated - and seems to be proven as the lowest latency of the lot!
Absolutely perfect presentation of a great modeller by a great player!
I’ve listened to at least 300 videos with Fractal, Kemper, Helix, Neural DSP and other multi effects. The sounds that you’ve got here are at least as good as all the other ones. And of course great playing as usual ❤️
NO WAY!!!
You obviously don't play. LOL- this one is as good as a Fractal FM3/9? I don't think so- not in this lifetime.
@@UTAH100 What’s with the LOLs and the insults? You sound like you’re still at school ffs.
@James Florio How does the GT-1000 and the GX-100 honestly compared feel and sound wise the the Axe FXIII or FM9 turbo? My point of comparison would be the UA amp pedals (Dream 65, Woodrow and Ruby), which in my opinion sound absolutely amazing but limited to what they are. I'm looking for an all in one solution that is at least on par to the UA stuff
I don't think the boss concept is to come close to looking exactly alike, but to focus on making something unique without being corrupted by the many uses and sonic similarities.
There are always people who don't understand that part of it.
I recently switched from Pod go to GX100. Best decision I have made in a long time. The GX100 sounds like an absolute beast!
What do you like more about the gx better than the line6 ?
@@elij.doummar4623 The amps sound much better and the dynamic response is better. It is easier to dial tones in the gx-100
I did the same with my Helix Lt, I played a Gx100 and made the switch
ha, that's exactly why I'm here 🙂 considering to 'crossgrade' from Line 6 to Boss for sologigs with backing tracks - I used to play a Roland VG-88...
What a great video. You have done a great job presenting this unit. I feel that it is a very accessible presentation for those who are curious but not really sure if this unit is for them.
Excellent tones and playing.
I have this unit and never stop learning about it, but for some reason I still don’t sound like Tom Quayle 😜 you are a true master Tom.
Hey, Tom...been a while. Hope all is good...great to see you again. Greetings from the Yukon Territory.
Great video Tom. I've had the Pod Go for 3 years and never cared for the amp tones/feel. When you started to talk about feel you won me over. I may have to get this now.
For the record... I bought it. Mostly because of this video. Thanks Tom!
This is the way to do reviews of this kind gear. You all know how hard it is to find pertinent information that will help decide whether or which piece to buy and when you’re dealing with .5-1K$ it’s worth spending the time learning before you buy, rather than having your time wasted by self promotion.
Thanks for getting straight into it and not wasting our time. Truly appreciate it and now realizing i still have time to swap out my Headrush for this unit. BOSS is the boss.
20:06 POLY tuner also has TYPE and OFFSET knobs for alternate tunings 6-REG, 6-DROP D, 7-REG, 7-DROP A / 4-B REG, 5-B REG with or without several semitones of offset.
I think Tom would make a cricket bat sound good .... fantastic playing ,amazing tones
Unlikely

I can’t wait to buy this
Tom thank you so much for this review and in particular the 3 free patches. They have been a revelation to me. I was struggling to really build fully satisfying tones for my tastes notwithstanding all the good advice and reviews I was hearing on CZcams and downloading patches. I was even thinking of getting another device,, and the GX-100 was a replacement for a Pod Go which was just too much and i couldn't really bond with it after 6 months of trying. The GX-100 is sooo much easier to use! Anyway Your patches were nothing short of a revelation, and for me the Clean patch in particular. And studying how you set up the amp controls helped me to see what i was missing. Oh and the input gain setting. I had great fun playing for hours after adding a couple drives and delays to the Clean patch. Thanks again
Great presentation - I appreciate the focus on clean/crunch tones. For over 30 years, I've had SS/tube amps, a few modelers, and now the GX-100. What I'm finding is that they're gotten really good at cleans and heavy distortion. The challenge is in the ability to emulate all those tube harmonics from mildly driven tube amps. Listen to Santana - Smooth, and his Mesa Mark I. During sustained notes, you can hear a multi-layer of rich harmonics that playfully develop into a balance between the amp and the guitar. I would be very interested to figure out how to get that effect from the GX, perhaps with an after-market IR?
Tried STL tonehub? Sort of a poor man’s Kemper… It’s a plug-in.
18:38 - Oh man....thought he was gonna say "that extra *push over the cliff".* As Tom superbly demonstrated though, these Boss units absolutely go to 11.
I heard it too
This is one of the most versatile devices I’ve ever used since I started playing guitar in 1985. I already had several BOSS pedals and a BOSS Katana 100W Combo, adding the GX-100 really made a world of difference. The boost it provides to the amp output is incredible. It was louder than the Marshall 4X12 in the practice space. Incredible sound from this smaller device and I can always go direct at a venue without the D/I box if I know their setup (output options are incredible).
That Ibanez is awesome!
I have a GT-1000 which is really good , nice to see they are continuing on a more affordable path with a better interface
Did You try the gx100? What's the diference between those two besides the screen and the price? Same amps and Quality? For high gain tones is as good as the gt1000?
I am wondering if this unit doesn't get the respect it deserves because it DOESN'T cost $1600? I bought a Quad Cortex after playing the GX100 for the last year. Truth be told, the GX100 sounds every bit as good. I took the QC back and got an Eventide H90. Now i have the best responding moddeler with the best effects out there.
This is one of the better demos I have seen. I would say 90% are very good, each player bring out the best to suit their style. Yhis is what I want so I can see the best of all the great aspects of the pedal. I would like to know why, I have seen many (Over 20 demos of this fine product, and not one person has incorporated the pedal. Why I ask. Is it no good. I would guess, it is multi function -wha, volume & expression and possibley more. I just want to see someone prove to me it does something. Great job-Thank you.
I love your sound so much.
I play bass and use this unit, it is soo flexible and packed with great sounds, love it.
The only down is that there is no xlr output, but a good di box will fix this.
That bit about adjusting the input settings to optimize them to your pickups and “running the ATD hot” was really an eye opener. Before, I just thought I was hitting a limit on how good the modeling could sound because it sounded a little flat. But all your sounds are really dynamic and tube-like.
Ahhhh the lifelong search/hunt/yearning for the ever elusive noise eh? I harnessed it about 5 years ago and I'm a very very happy camper indeed, I admit it was like bagging fog or trying to pin jelly on a wall, -but it can actually be done! yes, it is indeed where science meets art as some already are well aware of, but the hunt was certainly worth it in my case.
Hi Tom - great stuff. I hope you're doing well.
I miss my gt 1000. I had to sell it to fund for my friends’ hospitalization. I might get this rather than the me90.
Finally someone compared modeler to plugins, thank you!
How do you set up the modeler in your studio? Because I already have the studio monitors hooked up to my audio interface. If I hook up the modeler to my audio interface and from there to studio monitors, then I am doing AD to DA conversions on gx100 and AD and DA conversions again at audio interface.
The Licc at 24:58 hahaha! solid paps. galing mo idol!
Tom addresses one of the things I’ve noticed with amp modeling - the extreme forward character of the high end that has an odd weirdness that I can’t deal with. It appears Boss has realized it and fixed it.
Great review and playing as always. I was wondering if you can take a stereo out to a PA, and a mono signal with cab sim of to an amp ?
Cheers,
Andy.
I have (and used to use) the Boss GT10 and it totally put me off Boss. I found it very harsh and trebly, especially when up to full gig volume. The other problem it had was the patch indicator lights were blinding, especially when playing on a darkened stage. I had to put white stickers on the lights to dampen the brightness down. I gave up with that unit in the end. It looks like they have come a long way since that modeler. Thanks for the excellent review Tom.
Great vid! The GX is my preferred modeler these days. I struggled for a few years trying to get along with Line 6 stuff but never could get the right feel. This unit is the one.
I had similar experience, I think it is a latency problem
Never liked Line 6 distortions, even as the products are nice value. Just couldn't jive with their distortions.
Sound great warm and hugh
Yo Tom...we get it! You NICE on guitar! Lol, jokes aside great vid.
Tom I haven’t seen any demos of the GX100 with an acoustic. I’ve been using an HX Stomp for 2 years and I can get great tones for acoustic work.
Hey Tom, how is goin? Im really waiting your update. Don't stop impressing Peoples. Terima kasih
Excelent Guitarrist esta es la verdad mas allá de tal o cual pedalera que esta suena muy bien ♥️♥️☀️☀️
Played almost everything out there , and I have to agree with you . The gt products nailed the feel . I purchased the gt 1000 and I just couldn't be happier! . I will say one thing . Boss should make better factory presets so someone just messing with it at a music store can hear instantly how great these products are .
It is 15 February, 2024 as I comment. For the last few months, I was meditating on getting the GT-1000 Core (including your reviews of it, Tom). Only today, I learned that this unit was available at the same price, exchanges a few features I might not use (both inputs and stereo effects loops) for features I might prefer (multiple foot switches, exp. pedal and touch screen) and is only slightly less portable than the Core. Now, I need to sleep on it.
Being an American musician, I enjoy the sound of you calling them tube amps, though I’m accustomed to people from Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland calling them valve amps. Weren’t they always called vacuum valves?
I have never used a multi effects, only stomp boxes. Would this be best used straight into a cab or still be put in your chain into the front of the amp
Great video, Tom! Do you think the GX has any disadvantages (tonally) compared to the GT 1000?
No
First of all, thank you for your clear explanation.
I have also had the GX-100 for a while, but first used it mainly as an effects processor together with a tube amplifier: 4 cable method.
Lately I've been playing via headphones via my MacBook pro model 2021. And then using the amps and the speaker simulation in the Gx-100.
However, I connected these via USB. Then I have a stereo signal with effect and a "stereo" without signal treatment. In your video and also in other videos I see that you use the line-out on the left and right. Are there any advantages compared to USB use? Because then the analogue-to-digital conversion takes place in the audio interface. Compared to the USB method, the signal is then converted twice. Can you explain the advantage of one method versus the other?
Great detail! Xan you share what pickups your guitar has? Dont recognize that Ibanez.
I'm thinking of getting one very soon. I'm just worried about taking the plunge. There are so many of these out there. It's hard for me to choose. You have the gx-100, the neural DSP, the Line 6, etc etc.... not sure what to do.
Fantastic sounding 😃👍
When using headphones - is there any easy way to input music from a phone or computer to play along with - instead of wearing 2 sets of headphones?
COOL .
It would be nice to know for which usecsse you prefer the gx and the gt1000.
Hi Tom, as always, your content is more than helpful, thank you. A silly question...The GX100 can be used as a midi controller for vst, Neural DSP plugins, etc like a Behringer FCB1010? I have many presets I would like to keep under control as I do with the FCB1010 and, if the Boss can handle this silly option, I will sell the unit (with Eureka 3 EPROM)
Did you find anything out about this?
I have been using the GX-100 as an mfx AND and midi controller to utilize plugins in Ableton Live. Works great. Some stuff to set up to get the Midi channels set to the switches, but not too bad. 👍
@@mywinterheart Thank you man! ;)
I have a GX on order and it's coming in on Wednesday. Where can I order your talent to go with it?!?!
I still find my mighty Mesa boogie is great live. But I’m hoping this unit will spare my neighbours’ ears and allow me to play at home on a Sunday afternoon!!
Can you use one of the outputs to just send the bluetooth signal (say backing tracks) out seperately to a different mixer channel
Molto bello!
Between this, the GT1000 core and the boss ME90 which is a better option in terms of:
- getting an almost mix-ready sound that I can directly plug into an audio interface to play /record
- getting a great sound when connecting it to a PA speaker (not an amp) if I intend to go ampless on stage.
All 3, same tones.
What i have learned from the comments is they all love TQ and have a vast collection of gear. Im not sure i can control the high gain buzz by quickly turning down the guitar volume. When creating those patches as soon as the buzz comes in i would have turned the the gain back down snd never would have created what you have so good to have your presets on there. I would sound buzzy playing them though.
The other thing is hearing this on youtube you are also very good at making anything sound good. Neural DSP, great on youtube by TQ, totslly fails at my end. So what factors on the quality of a single note aside from playing and studio wherewithall who knows? If it isnt quite right it joins the vast collection and the quest continues. Im in the mood for saving i guess.
Beck sounds like Beck on a Squire and champ amp if he can sneak his Klon in.
Hi Tom ...noticed a few times there was noise hum (17 & 20 mins) when not playing ..im getting that ...thought it might be my studio monitors ...any idea how to eradicate it?
Did you use a booster with the x hi gain On that patch?
Thx
Really interested to see how it goes going into a D.I box...for playing through a P.A
what is recommended when plugging into two Deville amps via preamp in....should i set the output to match the speaker type. Which is 112? also will i need to turn off modelling for all my factory patches? and lastly the input gain for multiple guitars...will i need to specify the guitar per patch?. Sorry for all the questions...just want to get it right :)
Hello! I’m having one issue. I just got the GX-100 and so far the only issue I’m having is that I feel like there is a sound gate on that’s to sensitive? My sustain just cuts right off and I’m using two core PRS’s 594 and a custom 24-08 core. My Kirt Hammet Ltd 602 even cuts right off. So what setting needs to changed because I don’t see a sound gate in any of the presets. Hope it’s ok that I asked you. Playing through a PRS HDRX 20 into a 2x12 Marshall …Thanks James
The older Boss GT multi-effects always left me unsatisfied with their COSM amp and cab models (so I used them only as effect units into a good amp). It seems that they have changed something in the modelling... Would I be correct in assuming this? And if so, what's changed?
BOSS latest multi effects utilise AIRD (Augmented Impulse Response Dynamics) technology. In a nutshell, it reacts and feels so much more like the 2 way feedback you get when connecting your guitar to a valve/tube amp.
@@markharley99
Thanks Mark. I appreciate your answer. I'm still using an older Boss SE-70 half-rack multi-effects unit and find a lot of great & useful sounds from it. I'm not interested in purchasing something new if it has the old COSM modelling features. And these days we find ourselves ordering some things online, not even having a chance to try out the products first. Don't want to end up with another GT product where I only use the effects side of the unit. I'll do some research & reading about AIRD Thanks again.
I used the GT10 for years then jumped over the GT100 and went to the 1000. But I wasn’t really satisfied with the GT1000. So I decided to go the the GX100.
It would be great if boss made a GX-100 CORE. Or maybe just a firmware update to the GT1000CORE to free the signal path the same way the GX100 has it.
I'd love to have the GT1000CORE as a perfect all in one solution to carry in the pocket of a gig bag. But unused blocks in the signal chain triggers my anxiety/OCD (I know is dumb, but I can't help it).
You can make a patch, in which you order the blocks, and then copy it to the other slots.
The one question I have is what amplifier are you using? Modeling seems like it can be tricky based on what you are pushing the signal through. Won't the amp color the final sound based on its own characteristics?
Can you turn the preamps off & just set the buttons to individual pedals like how the Boss ME80 works?
Yep. Just drag the pre-amp out of the chain...it's as easy as that.
yes, just like Mark said.
Thanks everyone!
TQ smokes! The FX run in series typically but can they run in parallel with any of such devices?
yes, you can run them in parallel
The boss range is one of the best at running parallel effects. The studio rats do that in their video on this device. The fractal units and the helix devices have the capabililty to do it to although the hx stomp is limited in this regard.
Very nice sounds. But I'll stick to my pedals. Too complicated. Love your playing TQ.
24:59 The licc but ethereal.
My experience which is decades worth, VSTs no matter synth or guitar don't match hardware either VA synths, guitar modelers or whatever. Something about modeling a circuit in code vs an actual circuit, to my ears there's a difference. I realize it's code in modelers but it's running on a dedicated circuit vs on a computer interpreting a circuit. That said I use both for convenience.
I'm trying to find out if I can run left and right wet signals at the same time run a dry signal (out of the SEND?) into a dry amp? So Wet/Dry/Wet 3 separate outs. Anyone know?
Dear Boss, pattern delay on the GT and GX please? 🔥
Anyone know what kind chair he’s using?
I’ve just ordered one of these.. but I’m a bit old and have never got on with effects processors. Certainly not live. I’ve always found that I can’t get the volumes correct and end up annoying my lovely band-mates.any advice on how to set these amazing devices up in a live situation would be gratefully received. Btw .. you are a superlative guitar player.. think you could make the cheapest guitar & amp sound great 👍
I'm old too. I'm having trouble getting some sounds I like on my GX100 but when I eventually get one it sounds great! It takes time and patience to get there, however. I have lots of time but patience is another thing altogether. :-) Hang in there and it'll happen.
At a what looks like £1000 less than a Quad Cortex, it sounds like a good option.
Yeah but the Fractal FM3 is right there and probably at least as good. Neural QC is also good but overpriced.
Fan frm India of yours tone sir. Pls share settings of clean and distorted tones for my learning and playing Regards
The thing that compromises the experience is the lack of the balanced output. Was considering this as a tour-friendly alternative for my Helix, which is huge and heavy, but it would require an external DI-box, which defeats the purpose of an all-in-one quick-to-set-up unit a bit.
