- 📍Between Columbia and I-95 is where you'll find Sumter, SC which is actually the 8th largest metropolitan area in the state! Bordered by the Wateree River, the area has a diverse economy when it comes to healthcare, textiles, agriculture, and of course it's home to the Shaw Air Force Base.
Rich in history, Sumter dates back to 1785 and was named after the Fighting Gamecock himself, General Thomas Sumter of the Revolutionary War. Then in 1941 a major thing happened and Shaw Air Force Base was established and it has become a staple to the areas economy and growth.
🍽Sumter has some great bites and sites to check out! First there's the Sumter Original Brewery which is 30,000 square feet, with 3 stories, and has a 13 barrel brewing system! Being the first brewery in Sumter, it has become a cultural icon and a great gathering spot. For more upscale dining, there's the Hampton's Restaurant serving delicious regional American cuisine with an Italian accent. It has a private dining room, cosmopolitan cocktail bar, and beautiful rooftop bar. For a more low-key eatery, there's the Palmetto Oyster House serving some of the best seafood in all of Sumter.
🦢If you're looking for something to do, the Swan Lake Iris Gardens is a must visit spot! This public park is the only one in the United States that has all 8 species of swans. In May, the park hosts the Iris Festival which is a 3-day festival full of concerts, arts and crafts, plants, antiques, activities for children, and more! For the history buffs, the Sumter County Museum is perfect to explore. Home to the Williams-Brice House, which is how the University of South Carolina Gamecocks got its name for their stadium, the museum has many exhibits on the areas history.

It’s pronounced Sum-ter, not Sumner.
