  • Video #687: This smaller cousin of the original LC Slicer, is a great choice for those who don't need all the features of the larger unit... More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
    Today I will be demoing the brand new LC Mini Slicer by Lucy Clay Tools, a company based out of the Czech Republic. This European styled slicer, is designed to evenly cut small to medium sized, unbaked polymer clay canes. It's much smaller than the regular LC Slicer, and is less than half the price. So it is well suited for those who work with smaller canes... have less storage space... want more portability... or simply just can't afford the larger model. This tool is sturdy and well designed, though not quite as precise or as versatile as the larger unit. The LC Mini Slicer is currently only available direct from the manufacturer (see link below video), but will be eventually be made available through the other reginional distributors at some point. It is good quality and a very useful product to have in your studio.

    Just a suggestion on this, why not use a post-it note pad to mark where the cane slice you just made fell on the rulers? This would be easy to move as you move your cane forward, plus no need to remove markings. As always, loved the video & keep them coming!

    Thank you, Cindy! I was interested in the original slicer but worried it would be too bulky for the small canes I make. The mini is just the ticket! The mini is definitely on my list!

    Love my mini slicer because it's portable. I do use a wide rubber band that goes from the end of the blade , wrap around the bottom to the small end of the horizontal side piece when moving to avoid boo boos. Love the idea of removing that side bar. Not sure I can remove mine because I did apply glue like the Lucy video recommend.

    I completely understand and I'm happy that you show us these items because as I said, I love seeing new toys that people come up with. I have even bought several items that you have demonstrated on You Tube, thank you! I only wish some of these items weren't so expensive.That's probably one of the things they considered when they made a smaller version of this item. Especially when weigh expense verses need. If you have ever heard the term " starving artist" I have found that to be so true. I know that as an artist I would love to have all of the gadgets of my trade and I did buy them all for a while. However, then I looked at all I had verses what I really use and I stopped buying. I just want new artist to understand that it's not about the gadgets you have its about practice and talent. I teach all of my students that all you really need is your hands, some clay and your imagination. So if I comment about different products I'm just playing devils advocate, I hope you understand it's nothing against you. I love what you do and I always look forward to seeing your videos. So keep doing what you do. Take care, Dee😊

    Cindy and Groupies,
    Without having access to the Mini Slicer to test it, I can see a couple of hacks that might make this unit a little easier to use. If some kind soul has one of these Mini Slicers, maybe they could test and report back.
    1. It might be possible to get a piece of Plexiglas of the right thickness and size to fit on the "floor" of the Slicer between the front and back hold-down pieces. This would let a user put a long cane in the slicer.
    2. A second piece of Plexiglas with a block of plastic glued to it even with the front edge, to form a right angle, would create a support similar to the one on the full size Lucy Clay Slicer.

    To start, you might want to put the blade down then butt the cane up against it so the first slice isn't wasted. Also, if the cane is too long, why not just cut off a piece that will fit?

    Just assembled mine.. No instructions included. But online PDF was available. I spent about 1/2 hour filling off the the various small burrs on edges where the cuts were a bit rough.
    Any suggestions for keeping it from slicing around when I use? THX

      +Margot4454 I believe they are just there to make the design look cool... there is no purpose other than aesthetics (that I know of anyway).

      Also it would be awesome if they put a can of compressed air above this so you could shoot liquid nitrogen onto your cane to stiffen it. Cus that’s what I do so I don’t have to run back and forth to the freezer

    Hey Cindy! If you get ahold of the Sculpey Design It Templates, I'd love to see some of the things you make with them. I bought them (just waiting for them to arrive!), but I'm not quite sure what I'm going to make yet! Would love to see what your creative mind could come up with to inspire me!

      Hi Wendi, I know you wanted a response from Cindy but I noticed you mentioned the Sculpey Design Templates. Don't get me wrong, I love Scupley, however, you can buy those green colored drafting stencils on Amazon that will do the same thing for you with a larger variety of shapes and sizes. I have been using drafting stencils for years now. I started out with the circles stencil that is great for measuring balls of clay to make sure each amount is the same. They come in circles, squares, rectangles, diamonds, triangles, lettering, and lots of other shapes. If you check out The Sculpey web site I know they have different items for their products. I hope this helps.

      Wendi Miller Hi there. I just got some of those templates. When I get the chance I will do a review of them. If I think of creative uses for them I will certainly add them.

    I notice you changed back to your previous pasta maker, does this mean there is a review of the other one you were testing out coming soon? I've heard pretty much nothing but bad reviews so I am very curious.

      ***** Good eye! Yeah I was getting wrinkles in the softer clays. I will be doing an update video, but not for a couple of months though... got other stuff that needs to come first. But I'll get to it. If you're looking for a really good machine, I still love my Atlas. Fairly pricey but an excellent machine!

      Thanks. I am new to polymer clay so I dont want to spend too much but i've been looking around and reading a lot of reviews. Hard to know if a good review for pasta will be a good review for clay lol.

      PolymerClayTutor I just happen to go to the thrift store on the right day and found a Sculpey brand pasta machine for $7.....now I really can't wait for the review lol. I also happen to get a rechargeable Ottlite for $8, seems like someone was cleaning out their craft room lol

    Hi Cindy, I love when someone comes out with a new toy to use with polymer clay. I know cutting clay canes can be difficult for some people without wasting a lot of the cane they are cutting. However, unless you do lots of cane cutting this item is still pricey, no to mention it can only cut certain smaller canes. Most of the artists I know do make canes but not enough to buy an expensive machine to do it. I'm sure you will agree, but if you buy all of the gadgets like this your workbench will begin to get to crowded to work on. With the Never Knead, the cane cutters, the UV machine, a clay roller, a toaster oven and all of the other gadgets, after a while you will have no where left to work. To be honest all you really need is the tile you work on, a clay roller, your blades, a few sculpting tools, and of course your oven. I don't have anything against this item, I just don't think it's for everyone.

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  Před 9 lety +3

      ***** I agree that people certainly do not need to have all the tools that are out there. I am just showing everyone what is available out there so that they can make an educated choice on what would work for them and what would not.

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  Před 3 lety

      Yeah the newer models don't have a measuring guide... to be honest they weren't all that helpful, you can get a more accurate measurement by using your eyes and how far you turn the knob. Plus with heavy use the guide could get a little cut up.
