  • With some help from my wife, my friends, CZcams videos and a lot of prayer, I was able able to build a front porch with a gabled roof. I'm retired from being a network systems engineer, so I'm not a professional carpenter, but I did get a permit and it passed all 3 inspections here in Tennessee.

    Nice job!! Coming from a Class A contractor here, one of the best porches I've seen from a homeowner diy!! I don't blame you for hiring out the shingles either. Lol. This is better quality of work than I've seen some so-called contractors/carpenters, they put the rough into rough carpentery and need to find another career. Kudos to you, im impressed sir!!

    Well that came out VERY nice! One suggestion that could help you in the future is to put deck joist tape under the stair stringers and, in particular, the top riser/deck beam, which were all sitting directly on concrete. It looks like you used treated wood for the stringers, which is rot-resistant, so you technically don't need joist tape, but it is a "best practices" suggestion for a little extra moisture protection where the wood touches the concrete, that is hidden by the treads and risers. But the top riser/deck beam looked like untreated wood, so it's definitely a good idea to put tape under that beam that sits on the concrete.
    But that's the only thing I noticed, and that's minor. Everything came out beautiful, and I LOVED the choice of tongue/groove roof for a nice textured ceiling below. I'm glad you put 3/4 ply on top, so roof nails wouldn't come through. The stain is perfect. You also got all the cuts right, which isn't easy to do, tying into existing slope. I'm really impressed, you did a superb job. 👏👏

    • @RoBeaird
      @RoBeaird  Před rokem +3

      Thank you, and thanks for taking the time to offer those suggestions. I hadn't even heard of joist tape. Guess that's because I'm an engineer, not a carpenter, LOL. You're right, the cuts were not easy to do. I messed up quite a few times trying to get them right.

    I am building a double decker porch on my two and a half story 12/12 pitch colonial home. By myself. 40’ long by 10’deep by 25’ tall, I have ten foot ceilings, just setting my joists now. It was funny watching four men raise a single 6” by 6”, image me raising twelve ten footers half fourteen feet in the air by myself, the advantages of being 6’4” and 280lbs. Not difficult for this 56 year old man. Tomorrow drip edge, I am making progress!

    Great job . I have built 3 porchs in my life time . first house , second house and my retirement house was the biggest and got help since it was 100 feet long and only my hubby and I . We were 52 and 53 when we built and used 6x6 's and built code plus Flat roof to make it easier . House was built code plus with 2x6 studs R 19 in walls and R 30 in attic and floors . Just paid to have my roof torn off and ice and water shield and new shingles and 6 inch gutters . I hired that out as hubby and i are now in our 70's . Hope you love your front porch as much as I love mine . I am up on a hill on 3 acres that I can see for miles on over 3 acres GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY FRONT PORCHS AMERICA brave night roof work

      @@RoBeaird up on a hill has it's advantages sometimes .but lots of disadvantages also . I can see 5 different firworks shows on July 4th 2 of them being in North Carolina and in the summer there is almost always a breeze up here . BAD are the wind also , I have had to replace my whole roof because of the beating it takes and water run off has to be managed , but water collection containers are almost always full to water my veggies garden and make manure tea to fertilize garden and yard . But water run off also means I have to really watch when it rains really hard . I have one 200 gallon tank my gutters go to and that is over full and my rain barrels are full. storms are worse because I am more exposed to wind , rain and hail . But that also means lots of work . Like the new roof with ice and water shield under it new custom made drip edge and replacing 5 inch gutters with 6 inch gutters and adding 2 new downspouts . My house only had 4 over sized down spouts 10 thousand dollar hit to my bank account . Brandon home repairs and roofing did a great job . Last night the rain came down really hard and it really got windy out . so checked roof and gutters already and things so far look OK

    At about 3:33 min, it is clear that this gable was built atop the existing shingles. If this meets code in that jurisdiction, fine, but I understand that it would fail inspection in some jurisdictions. It's worth investigating before duplicating this project, as a failed inspection might mandate complete removal of the gable.

    • @RoBeaird
      @RoBeaird  Před rokem

    • @larrylewinski3086

      @RoBeaird How could it pass inspection with the two load bearing headers/beams just nailed to the existing fascia?
      Also, how are you going to keep the birds from building nests and crapping all over the place on top of them headers/beams?
      I'm just asking because I'm going to be starting on one of these Monday 11/6/2023.
      Otherwise looks very nice, thanks for sharing.

    • @RoBeaird
      @RoBeaird  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Those beams were attached to a header which was attached with big lag bolts to the existing facia. It should hold, considering my porch only comes out 7 feet from the house and it's also supported by the 6x6 posts. And most of the gabled roof is secured to the top of the existing roof. I can't keep the birds from crapping on the beams but that's the price I pay for enjoying the look of the exposed high ceiling, which came out nice after staining it. Have fun with yours!

    • @daveroth5234
      @daveroth5234 Před 5 měsíci

      @@RoBeaird I too have an old Black & Decker. Bought a cheap clearance set from Walmart in 1990. Jig Saw, Drill, & 1/3 sheet Sander. That was my first saw & it's still running! Thanks for these lovely videos. At 67, things are a little more difficult than they were, but you & your wife inspire me to keep plugging at it. I first found your catio video, & was so impressed by the accessibility of your techniques. This lovely porch is out of my reach, both skill & cost wise, but I'm impressed clear down to my socks! Great Job!!! 🏆
      I have some family in Tennessee, & everyone I've met from there has been real nice folks. May God continue to Bless You & Yours! 🙏☮️🍀

    Awesole we are thinking about doing this before we replace our roof. Waiting to get a few quotes, but i definitely dont want to open up the roof into the attic

    • @RoBeaird
      @RoBeaird  Před 2 měsíci

      If you are doing it before you replace your roof, I would go ahead and remove the shingles in the area your porch is going. You'll need to cover it with tarp when it rains, unless they can get it done in one day, but you can nail the lumber directly to the roof without opening up your roof. You may catch some flack from some critics for doing that, but I've seen it done that way, especially with porches that don't come out that far from the porch. Mine only came out 7 feet.

    Very nice. On the gutter and front fascia; my personal preference would be to work off of an A frame ladder before I'd put an extension ladder at those angles. Only because I had one kick out on me many years ago and it was not a fun ride down Awesome job!

      Thanks for watching and for your good advice. I'm sorry you had to learn the hard way! My A frame ladders were not high enough to reach the areas that only my extension ladder could reach. But it did make me nervous, LOL.

    What a fascinating subject for a video! Gabled porches have such a timeless and classic design, and taking on a DIY project like this really shows a passion for craftsmanship and home improvement. It's impressive to see people tackling such intricate projects, as it involves a good understanding of architecture and woodworking. I'm curious about the specific design choices and techniques used in this project. How did you decide on the dimensions and materials? DIY projects like these can be so rewarding!

    • @RoBeaird
      @RoBeaird  Před 6 měsíci

      Thank you! I brought the porch out 7 feet to the sidewalk. I made it 16 feet long because that was one of the length the composite planks came in. I made the top of the gable 4 feet high because that was a common pitch. I wanted to expose the tongue and groove ceiling with the rafters, which looked nice when stained. I had to build recessed steps in order to meet the sidewalk. I wrote down a schedule of the procedures and the order they needed to be done. The angle cuts were pretty much done by trial and error as I'm a do it yourselfer , not a professional builder. Yes, it was very rewarding when I finally got it done!
