  • Today I'm silver brazing a seat stay bridge, cable guides, cable stops, and water bottle bosses (a.k.a. braze-ons) onto my mountain bike frame-and taking you along for the ride!
I show a lot of the brazing up close, sharing tips about what to watch for to make sure you don't cook the joints and burn up the flux. I also share my thoughts about where I'm placing the braze-ons on the bike and why. At the end I discuss some tips for cleaning the flux off the frame.
Here's where you can buy the brazing clamps I use in this video: cobraframebuilding.com/store/...

Really, really, really like your approach to all this. I have only done soldering on copper pipe. I would like a few new braze-ons on my old touring frame. Your video has been incredibly helpful! I might even try to build a frame! Or two! Peace! (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.)

Thanks, bud! It’s not rocket surgery. It just takes practice and a little instruction.

You, sir, are a badass. Thank you for filming these videos and taking the time to explain your process. My goal is to one day be able to braze bike tabs and stays. You are helping make that possible.

Your videos are really informative and entertaining. I'm in the process of converting an old steel frame into a proper road/randonneur setup and the braze-on tips and tricks you're giving are so helpful! Keep it up and greetings from Germany :D

Oxygen tanks are HIGH pressure vessels....2000 PSI. Acetylene tanks are LOW pressure vessels...200 PSI. That is why the valves are different and why the fuel valve can be opened a 1/4 turn for safety reasons. The Oxygen tank valve has 'double action' seats, if you will....Fully closed OR fully open.

Great video and some very nice brazing. I think in both bronze and silver you can get rods that are meant for dabbing and rods that are meant for that capillary-action flowing type deal. For this you want the flow rods but what are the pros and cons of silver vs bronze ? I thought silver might be stronger and need more heat but not sure.

Great Videos... Informative and inspiring. By the way where can I get a disk brake welding fixture so I can convert my cantilever brake bosses to disk for both my forks and frames? Thanks...keep up the great work..

Looking great, Joe. What kind of torch do you have. Seems small and easy to handle. Is that the same one you used to build frames before tig welding?

Hi Joe, have you ever tried/is it possible to TIG-braze these components instead of fillet-brazing as you are doing in this video? I’m thinking to try silicon bronze TIG-brazing or just TIG

When 'cracking open' high pressure tanks ALWAYS have the dials pointing directly away from your face. I have seen dials blown by 3000psi - it ain't pretty.

If the brand of brazing material you are using has the word “cycle” or “bike” in the title you know it will be marked up 10X in price.

Your torch tip is way too big, drop down to a 00 or even a 000, also get a smaller torch body, you have little control with that one you're using.
