I just bought Feederbrook Farm yarn at Rhinebeck and I can confirm, it is LOVELY!! It's my first time buying marled yarn like this, and I can't wait to use it. You don't see these yarns crocheted too often, so it should be a fun challenge 😀

Tayler, thank you for doing this, particularly since you are an independent dyer. I'm always impressed how you showcase others' yarn as well as your own. You could do as many other dyers do and only talk about your own yarn, because your yarn is amazing. I have a sweater quantity of your yarn waiting to be knitted up as soon as I figure out the rest of my pattern lol - you would have every right to feature your yarn proudly in all of your videos and just call it a day.
I've encountered a lot of ridiculous yarn snobbery and elitism in the past few years, especially on IG and YT. There also has been some straight-up Mean Girl behavior from some popular designers and dyers that really leaves a bad taste. The price points of some of the patterns and kits with recommended yarn keeps them out of reach for a lot of people. Some knitters, especially newer ones might not be as savvy or as confident in their yarn substitution, so it's really quite wonderful what you've done here.
I love Knitpicks in general as a great source for quality yarns. I've also used Schoppel Zauberball Crazy yarns, Primrose Yarn, and Patons Kroy sock yarns for several projects. I look forward to checking out some of these other recommendations.

Knitpicks is my go to for almost all my projects these days - they have a great variety and great prices - if you hate acrylics but you need to make something for a baby or a cancer patient, or someone allergic to wool, thier Brava yarns are just SO nice to work with - nothing like the acrylics you will get in the craft stores.

Queensland Perth - 80% superwash wool/20% nylon - 100g/437 yds/$15.00 (at Simply Sock Yarn) and Queensland Rainbow Bridge 100% superwash wool - 100g/328 yds - $16.75 - Just to add an option. This definitely has a more rustic hand to it, but it works well for me because I use it for socks. I will absolutely be indulging in some of the Feederbrook Farms yarn when I have the budget for it. I love BFL.

👍I totally agree about the Queensland yarns, they are well made and their colour choices are varied and lovely.
An interesting FYI ~ Queensland and Jojoland yarns are spun from the same fibres and produced in the same factory.
They are often indistinguishable from one another; so if you can't find Queensland in your area, Jojoland is the perfect substitute - and vice-versa.

Dream Color by Hobbii is also a lovely 100% wool option. It's Super Fine in weight and has 400m per 100g. Also it's so incredibly soft. Only downside is that it's impossible to choose a colorway when they're all so pretty ✨

Interesting topic, clearly presented. In addition, I may head over to Ravelry and look up the yarns that interest me-I enjoy reviewing the comments about yarn quality that people share there, and I have steered clear of some yarns because of the number of people who have said that a yarn was prone to pilling, splitting, had an unreasonable number of knots per skein, etc etc. Likewise, when all comments are glowing, I am much more likely to save and invest in a superhighquality product (yarn). I’m looking forward to more in this series of “budget to bougie” yarn (and craft gear, maybe?) 🧶💕

Great video, Tayler! I love that you included so many more affordable options. As a quick FYI, the Schoppelwolle you showed the screenshot off was Stärke 6, which is their heavy sport to DK weight, but they also have a fingering weight option, called Schoppelwolle Zauberball Crazy, which runs at about $24. I've knit socks with it and it holds up really nicely.

For a couple of inexpensive options, Premier also has Premier Puzzle (100% acrylic, bulky, 100g/$8.99) and Premier Puzzle Cotton (53% acrylic/47%cotton, worsted, $10.99/100g). The cotton only has 10 or 12 colors but the regular bulky Puzzle has a lot of colors.
Hobbii has Dream Color (100% wool, fingering, 100g/$21.99). Beautiful, subtle gradients, but wait for a sale, you can get a much better deal.
And the Woolly Thistle carries Junction Fiber Mill's "Making Tracks" (100% American Falkland wool, DK, $31.99/100g) Spun at a small mill in Vermont. 10 lovely colors.
Thanks, for a great topic, great show!

Great Podcast - thank you!!! This is the first one of yours I've seen and won't be the last for sure! You mentioned JoJoLand yarn.
I just ran across them with a surprisingly great situation! My sister and I bought yarn at a store in WI for an Aran type sweater for my great niece and we didn't buy enough. We called the shop and they were able to order more yarn and I assumed I'd have to make do with whatever dye lot was available. I was thrilled to find out they still had that dye lot and I got the yarn in a timely manner. The yarn is Baritone, a 100% superwash wool, and the color is a beautiful rich green, perfect for an Irish sweater and the price was $10.00 for 100 grams/220 yards. And I love working with it, it's a very nice soft wool yarn. Also, before we called the shop in WI, I tried calling JoJoLand directly in Texas and though they seem to be a very small business, they did return both my call and my email within a business day or two. So, overall, I was impressed!

In non-superwash yarn: for DK color-changing yarn, Junction Fiber Mill offers Making Tracks (32 USD for 210 yards, 100g). For Fingering, there's RiverKnits Chimera marled yarn (12.09 GBP for 195m, 50g), which is in the $30 range for 100g after the current exchange rate to USD and shipping. Both are pretty soft yarns. Garthenor in the UK has two-color barber-pole marls, dyed and undyed, in many of their weights. Softness is yarn-specific: some are toothier than others.

Also check out the Painted Destert yarns which fall into that lower middle range. They're 100% wool, fingering weight, and have epic color fades.
Mountain Colors Twizzle (worsted) and Twizzlefoot (fingering) which are merino & silk and get a marled effect because of the way the different fibers take the dye differently are also worth looking at even though they're maybe not a TRUE marled yarn. Their website is being glitchy for me, but if I recall correctly, they're at the lower end of that market price category.

I have a friend who really likes the Premier yarn, and has had good luck with it for what it is…it is a budget yarn, but she said it feels good and doesn’t feel/look ‘budget.’ Zauberball is really fun, I have two in fingering…do not use it for socks, it’s way too thin for socks. I gave up on it for socks cause I thought it would just not hold up as a sock, but would be great for other uses. Haven’t tried the larger sizes. Green Mountain Spinnery makes gorgeous yarn. I’d also suggest Juniper Farms if you like Green Mountain Spinnery.

I hope you do more of these kinds of videos! It was super helpful and lot of those yarns I may never have found on my own. I am a big fan of Yarn Hero too!

This was really helpful. I have watched many of your lovely videos, but often wondered what ‘marled’ meant. Now I know that some of my favorit yarns are marled 😂 I really like Dream Colour by Hobbii. It’s often on sale at a great price.

I loved this podcast! Great point about saving your pennies to get the more expensive yarn. A special yarn that you saved up for makes it even more special. People tend to forget that. I keep forgetting that I have 4 Zauber balls!!! 🌸

I bought a bunch of the jojoland rhythm when Little Knits had it on sale. I want to use it as a contrast in a colorwork sweater.

Thank you very much for the time and effort obviously invested in this production. So much helpful information! We all experience different seasons in life. Some during which we can spend more than others. I truly love the feel of natural, untreated fibers. I also appreciate the many options available for those times when natural fibers are not an option economically. I have fond memories of falling in love with crochet as a young girl, using the very cheapest of acrylics. Thanks again!

Paton’s Kroy is such a great yarn. Right now I’m wearing my Bubbly sweater by Isabell Kraemer I made in the Grey Marl color. It’s the best-looking sweater I’ve made, looks store bought! I’ve made socks for my brother that he really loves. It wears like iron, looks great and is cheap! Thanks for doing these types of videos.

I am glad you brought up your weren’t sure about how one of the yarns you got was going to come out. Unfortunately I’ve recently seen some bullying of a few crafters who weren’t happy with what they got and expressed their opinions regarding it and were treated badly because of it. Most of it was that they should have done their research which even with research you might not get all the information or be misled by information which isn’t their fault nor should they have been treated the way they were for having an opinion

Your Ferris Wheel Lion Brand yarn was so pretty, and I really liked how fuzzy/frizzy? it seems.
Thanks for educating me on what marled yarn is.
I am experimenting making a water bottle cover by knitting jute twine.

Knitting Fever Painted Sky, is a fantastic alternative. I have found it for $13-18 for 100g and have had no problem getting gage for projects originally knit with spin cycle.
