I'm sure you've all played a game or two that's made you feel stuff. And i'm sure you've also heard the classic "it's just a game" moniker thrown at you from time to time too.
But how do games actually make these emotional impactful moments work?...

I played Outer Wilds 4 moths ago and it immediately became my favorite piece of any media ever made. To me the game felt simultaneously cozy and haunting with the lovely music where there was life and the endless space around everything. It is also very technically impressive how they handled the whole solar system living it's own life independent of most of your actions.
Edit 2 moths later: I learned some of the beautiful songs on guitar and now I love it even more.

Some of my other favorite places in games that I really "felt" were the last level of Celeste, playing with Leshy one last time in Inscryption, the ending to The Beginner's Guide, the last It Takes Two level, and the entire game of What Remains of Edith Finch. one of the best leitmotif's is the Soul of Cinder soundtrack from Dark Souls 3. The boss uses Gywn's theme and moveset in the final phase and it is one of the best endings to a trilogy of amazing games. No words spoken, but you know what's happening the moment you hear that plin plin plon

To me, the shock value of discovering that the world's over, and I can't do anything about it is what made the ending of Outer Wilds so great. I did not get that much feels, but I was blown away by the twist. It was a massive betrayal, and it was amazing.

I completely understand how much music can make you feel. The song “Pretty” from OneShot’s OST probably wouldn’t make sense to someone, as it has a lot of strange mechanical sounds and distorted notes. In Wartales, I made a mistake to run into a high level region and engaged with an enemy squad. I sacrificed 3 wolves so that the rest of the team could win the battle and get out of there safely.
Gameplay wise, it was not that bad. I can just catch more wolves in the wild to replace them. But those 3 wolves have accompanied me since the beginning. They have fought coutless battles. They harassed many archers rendering them ineffective. They took strong blows from the enemy to save more gold from repairing armors. Lossing them was very sad.

One of my favourite leitmotifs is the "This is what you are" motif from Warframe. It is kind of a duo, a chorus of children and a female vocalist, mirroring the story, with a long lost, awakened from cryosleep warriors and their motherly guide.
And at certain points at the story, this dynamic changes according to what is going on. Such as in the Apostasy Prologue theme or the small piece I Came Back For You.

Another example is the Astral Infection biome leitmotif, it id used for several parts, the meteor, the Astral infection biome, the Slime God, the Astrem Deus, the Astrologen Slime, The Astral Aeus, all of the Severants of the Scorge, and lastly, the Devourer of Gods.

This video reminded me of a relatively recent time a game I've played for years gave me feels.
It was World of Warcraft, after the Shadowlands expantion (the second most recent of many). I had been exploring the shadowlands for about a month when I ran out of some resource or needed something hard to find, so I used my hearthstone to go back to Darnassus to get it off the auction house.
My hearthstone, instead of taking me to the city's inn, to the lush inside of the huge, water surrounded world tree of Teldrassil. Took me to a starting zone on the mainland called Darkshore, its name now red and reading "Darkshore: Horde Territory" as I flew up above the trees to see that great tree stump gone. Burned to a crisp and inaccessible.
I went to the nearby Timewalker, a person who could show me what had happened. The attack on the tree, how it had burned with hundreds still inside, helping people onto boats to leave the continent...
As a worgen player, I had watched my character's birthplace fall to a curse and then rendered inaccessible by plague as her people took refuge in that great tree. Then, to watch her...my, second home be destroyed as well...
I cried. A piece of me had died. The piece connected to that place, to that character who I had spent months grinding on, who was now a part of me. It was so gut wrenching I had to stop playing. It still stings.
That personal of a moment will never be recreated, but I knew that hundreds of players also felt the sorrow and rage I was feeling. The feeling of having a place you called home destroyed...
May Elune give peace to those who fell that day, and strength to the survivors who keep up the fight.

Although I haven’t played the God of War games, from what I can tell, the original trilogy is more cinematic than the new games. It uses more cinematic techniques to tell its story, and I have heard someone mention that God of War 2018 was more like a play, and yeah, I can see that due to the fact that the game is dialogue heavy and focuses more on blocking and movement instead of camera tricks and sound design. Not to mention that the action is pretty standardized, which gives me theater vibes. But I could be wrong as I haven’t played them.

Thx for another reminder that I need to finish outer wilds finally. For some reason I keep on running from it... Bye for now. I'll let it play in the background muted.

This might sound Suprising, But Destiny 2 and a Small DS Game Called Catz Both made me "Feel". Cayde is a Beloved Character by Nearly Everyone in the Community. Its one thing we can all agree on. Bungie killing his Character off in Forsaken was A Bold (And Clever) Move. It made us Feel Angry, We wanted Revenge, and it made us Mourn. Many of us had been Interacting with this Character for Just under 4 Years (Forsaken Came out 5 Days Before Destiny 1 would have been 4 Years old).
Catz? Right, Its Credits Song Punched me in the Gut Cause of my Late Pet Cat (It still does). The Credits Piece is about a Small Kitten Growing up and Exploring the World Around its home. The Lines that hit the hardest for me were "Im Just a Little Kitten, Hardly Fit my Mittens" and "Open Windows to Go from Flat-To-Flat". I had Grown Up with my First Cat, So i was very Attached to Him. Me Being a Lonely Young Child Interpreted this line not as a Growing up and Maturing But as a Leaving home and Never Returning Situation. I couldnt Get Past The First Verse Without Breaking into Tears. So much So I just hum the Tune and i tear up (Cause it also Reminds me of Him).
