- Feb. 2020 - The master cylinders on the Austin looked fit for the scrap bin but I knew they could probably be restored to their former glory with a bit of work. I could have bought new ones or sent these off to a specialist for bead blasting/plating or coating & rebuild, but the costs for doing this to countless parts in a car restoration, typically mount up to a very hefty bill.
In any case I enjoyed refurbishing these and hopefully this will show what can be achieved with a few DIY tools, some paint and a little effort! (and it's way more satisfying!)
The content is a mix of photo's & then mostly timelapse.

Note: This is not intended to be a tutorial, I'm an amateur DIY'er on a tight budget showing my work in progress of an oily rag restoration of the Austin. Body will come later. Bear in mind that my methods are not necessarily the best.. Hope you enjoy the video!

Am full of admiration for your work and attention to detail. Keep well.
Cheers, appreciated
You maybe doing this on a budget but it
doesn't show the attention too detail looks fantastic, it's looking better than new
Thanks!, Despite the low dough situation, I’m trying at least make it look pleasing to the eye, even if its not technically perfect or the original finish. 👍
This series is really interesting and hugely enjoyable .
Glad you are enjoying it, thanks
Your work on this car is above admirable, I salute you sir. Now I wished I'd have kept mine.
Can't wait to see this beauty running, so for Pete's sake hurry up and don't dilly dally.
Fantastic job from day one.
Very well done.
Thank you, I'm on it! Thanks for your encouragement, appreciated !
I was really enjoying watching your painstakingly careful restoration project. This is just a note to say that I miss seeing your progress and look forward to seeing further episodes, should that become possible. In any case, thanks for the story so far.
Sorry for late reply!. Appreciated, update coming soon
@@langranator Thanks for the reply - looking forward to the update.
Your attention to detail is great 👍
Thanks 👍
You have once again nailed it! Love it that you are not just buying new and replacing but if it’s in good condition restoring it, keep it up
Thanks! Will do 👍
Great job. Enjoying the progress. Your uncle will be well pleased.
Thanks, that’s great! Yes I think he will be blown away just by the fact I have even got it running again!
Looks amazing. You wouldn't think it was done on a budget.
Thanks! with some good prep and the right type of paint, I think it’s amazing what you can achieve with aerosols.
Really enjoying these videos in Australia, great work. Music was good too
Wow! that’s great to know thanks! 👍👍
Yes that piece of music was good, normaly it grates and I turn it right down
looking good going to be great when its all done
Thanks 👍
You are doing a great job on this Austin 1300. my late dad had the Morris version, I loved that car, I loved driving it.
That’s great to know , thank you 👍
Great work on the Austin, can't wait to see it finished ----- always had a soft spot for ADO 16's as they remind me of The AA book of the car, fitting accessories section.
Another great job
Cheers 👍
Those abrasive wheels are very impressive.
Yes, you can get them for angle grinders too. (Search for polystrip wheels) Ideal for removing paint and light rust without clogging and they don’t remove too much metal. 👍
Incredible,look brand new.
Fantastic job as always!! The level of care and detail is astonishing and I salute you!
Thanks, I’m glad you like it! 👍
Love the work you have done repairing these old cylinders and the repair using solder. Hope the paint doesn’t give up with brake fluid around them.
Thanks, yes spillages are not an option! Should be ok with some extreme care/protection filling up!
Fabulous work
Cheers 👍
Great work, inspiring. Thanks!
Gotta love those single circuit brakes! These cars had an option of servo assist, with a remote mounted Lockheed servo - but usually only seen on the more upmarket or sporty variants, like the MG1300, 1300GT and 1300 VDP.
Yes, When I work on single circuit brakes, it makes me a bit nervous and ever more keen to get things spot on. I know from past experience with a mk1 cortina, that brake failure is not a great experience! I fitted a remote servo to an old ford once but I overlooked fitting the vacuum restrictor. I nearly went through the windscreen on the first test drive, the brakes were unbelievable!
Excellent work.
Thank you
great result !
Cheers!
Great job 👍
Cheers 🙂
Quality work, would have been lovely to clear laquer them if it didnt have the hole but you have done an amazing job
Attention to detail is admirable. Looks fantastic. I do hope the solder repair will stand up to the pressure from the braking system. After rubbing down the solder repair the metal must be paper thin.
Thank you!. Yes it will be fine as it’s just the reservoir, so there is no pressure in that part. The tin pots are quite thin but they should last for years now rust has been removed and they are sealed.👍
You’re doing very well good luck from scotland
Many thanks for the encouragement! 👍
fantastic :)
Fantastic job. I had forgotten that cars back then didnt have servo servo assistance 😲.
Yes, you got a free gym workout driving the older cars ! No assisted steering either. You would end up with arms like Popeye if you put a 10” sports steering wheel on..
@@langranator i had a mk2 escort estate. That i think was ex radio rentals and that had drum all round and the brakes were so bad you had to virtually stamp on them to make them work.
I changed my brake and clutch fluid to silicone so no problems now doesn’t strip paint if spilled
You beat me to it Troy, I was going to suggest the same thing.👍
Yes, I nearly used silicone fluid but I read that it can affect some seals and I couldn't get confirmation from my seal supplier that silicone would be compatible with their seals. It would probably be ok but I went with what I know and I'll be super careful topping up! Cheers
langranator I have had it in my own 1963 mk 1 1100 for the last two years it doesn’t seem to have damaged anything. I am just finishing the same job as you on my own car. Will be having it’s first start. In the next couple of days. Just in case you need to know. I replaced my brake and clutch master cylinders with new ones from minispares. The clutch is the same. But the brake master cylinder has to be for a cooper s mini as it’s taller than a standard mini. And the same size as the 1100 one. They are£60 each genuine replacement metal ones. A fraction of what they charge for no’s ones on ebay
@@langranator I've used silicone in my Stags brake and clutch system for years, ever since I rebuilt them. There's a possible issue if you replace conventional fluid with silicone WITHOUT replacing the seals first. I've heard some people say silicone will give a different pedal feel to that of conventional. I can't say I have noticed any difference.
Good luck.
Handy to know for the future, thank you 👍👍
I noticed you masked up holes but not brake pipe inlet unless it didn't show in vid.
Ahh yes, those stripping discs....the all too familiar cuts on the knuckles where you got a bit too close....
Top tip: Wear a welders glove on your holding hand!
👍
Yet another fantastic job, well done.
Just a couple of questions/points - Thanks again for showing materials/tools used. How did you manage to get brake pipes so straight and perfectly bent ? I redid the master cylinder on my Stag a few years ago and used Rust-Oleum Hard Hat 2117/1017 Galva Zinc Alu x which looked even closer to the original. You might want to give it a try sometime. Finally, was there a reason for fitting piston and seals etc before painting, rather than leave till after ?
Again, brilliant work - can’t wait for your next video :) :)
Thank you 👍 thanks for the tip, that paint does sounds perfect for an original look. The brake pipes were curved around suitable sized paint pots, & 1/2” drive sockets i.e 28mm upwards, depending on the radius I needed. I straightened the pipe carefully by hand bending slowly/gently bit by bit against the curve as soon as I uncoil it, then cut to length. If you take your time you can get it 99% straight by hand. There are bending/straightening tools available on the market. If you have access to a lathe, i’m sure you could make both from plastic or hardwood. The straightener is basically a bit of tube! I put the seals in first only so the paint would not get marked during handling. Hope that helps! Thanks !
langranator Cheers :) I’ve even got one of those pipe straighteners, and it doesn’t give as good a result as you’ve achieved !
Question, has your uncle seen any of the progress to his car? THAT would be amazing 😲😲
He hasn’t seen it in person as he is about 100 miles away and avoiding travelling atm, but last week I posted him a few photos of the progress (he is not on the internet), and he wrote back saying he was very impressed. 🙂
Appropriate background music towards the end. Good work.
Thanks for the feedback 👍
Brilliant job, but can't help noticing you didn't take the newspaper up on it's err. 'adults only entertainment break.' Spent too much on the restoration? :-)
Thank you! Yes I am sorry that I couldn’t make it this year, but I hope you had fun though! ;)
Really like following your progress and you appear to be doing great! However the music this episode is just awful! Please find something else or just leave it silent. Too distracting. Regards.
Thank you! Thanks for your comment. I thought the music was ok but I haven’t had much feedback on it yet. The music thing is really difficult as everyones tastes differ. I tried 4 videos without music and some said they were too quiet, so now I’m experimenting trying different genres, I think faster tracks go better with timelapse which this video has a lot of, but not everyone may agree. There were a few tracks in the video, did you not like any of them? What do you suggest?! I’m limited with free music but what sort of music would you like to listen to? Any particular Genre, mood? Thanks
ทำความสะอาดจนเหมือนของใหม่ สวยงามมากครับ
