Firstly, I am not a professional! If you want pro advice I recommend watching Marimbalogy, Casey Cangelosi, Rob Knopper, William James et al. These guys do AWESOME technique videos.
Also, this is an exercise I came up with, but I'm sure there are many that are similar to this, so I don't own it or anything. It's just to help you guys out :)

New #TECHNIQUETALK episode! I love this two-mallet exercise - it's easy, flexible and can be done anywhere with any instrument, or even no instrument! You can download the exercise PDF for FREE at www.adamtanpercussion.com/download :)
Let me know if you like this exercise by giving me a thumbs up above and I'll continue to do more! #TheStudioFamily
I have a fun exercise for you, it's called broccoli. four mallets, A(1) E(2) G(3) C(4), then the pattern is sixteenth notes, 1234-2341-3412-4123, each for a full measure and walking up a whole step for each change in pattern, then you do the same pattern moving up every two beats until you reach AEGC an octave higher than where you started. Then do the same thing going down but now the pattern is 4321-3214-2143-1432 using the same note change pattern. The rest of the exercise uses the same beat and note changing pattern as the first half except now you do 1234-2341-3412-4123 and each gets one beat, same thing descending. That probably makes no sense.
Like the exercises. Good for beginners. What tempo settings & which metronome can we use for practicing.
You should try to play marimba with gong mallets😂
Liam Hosty I HAVE DONE THAT it's very embarrassing hahaha
can you do more two mallet exercises
In America (or the people that I know) count sixteenth notes as "1, E, and, a"
Mmmm yes I always forget to count like that in videos haha, but I count like that too normally :)
Owenmoney yep that's how I do it
naaah! oranders rule! 1 or & a!
Marimba solo by you? YES PLEASE!
Dasherheart Yayyy well I'm glad there will be more than one person who wants to play it (me) hahahaha
you need to be a teacher
Hahaha maybe one day I'll get to be a real one! Thank you :)
I feel like maybe it would make more sense in the these exercises to keep the mallets at the same height
Can you make a video on more comfortable chord positions? I play vibes in my school's honor jazz band and there is so many uncomfortable feeling chords with 4 mallets
Frost Bite Thanks for the suggestion, that's an interesting one! I'll look into it 😄
I love old memes and this channel!
Smooth memes.... make beams... ;)
This has helped me so much!!!!!!!! Thanks Adam! Keep the rockin' videos coming!
Ahaha thank you so much for watching! Love your instagram ;)
Useful excersize and I would love to learn your Marimba solo. Just keep us posted yah? Keep it up.
Definitely I will, thank you for your support! 😄
I heard ur new piece on ur blog and it sounds sooooo good I would buy as soon as it comes out
Max Ma Aww I'm glad you like it! Thank you so much 😄
Awesome video I love the pixelated AWWWWWWWW
That is still my favourite short clip to use ;)
omg I love the "Adam it's not hard enough" parts
Hahahaha EVERYONE SAYS IT
thanks for sharing it with us
Jim Chu No worries, hope it helps you!
Yooooo!!! Dude your studio is incredible!!!
Thank you man! It has gotten a lot nicer since this video!
We play an exercise identical to this for marching snare - called 'monkey singles'
3:14 but you are a professional. Expert? Idk, but definitely a professional since you do teach for a living.
NyoomBot Ah that makes sense. well at least if I say it like that no one can be like "wowww you think you're sooooo professional" hahaha 😂
Adam Tan fair point 😂😂😂
I love this! I will work on this exercize for sure (: More free downloads (and I can't wait to see the video about those gravity percussion mallets 😉)
Sophia Suante Thank you for watching! I'll be sure to make more downloads and yes can't wait for the Jupiters !
The room in The first 30 seconds would put my family in financial ruin
Adam it would be awesome if I could get a hold of a marimba solo you wrote
Gormstorm It's coming soon, expect it in less than a month!
get on with it alread!!!!
This is really good, well done
You should watch the persons Mr Wilson’s music channel he uses your technique a lot!
On your next mallet review you should do "Variations on a theme of a Rick Roll" lmao
I “C” how good this exercise is
Wouldn't mind playing your upcoming solo for my juries one of these years. ;) is it going to be digital download or hard copy? Love this channel btw. I watch every episode!
TJ Haley Aw man that's awesome! it'll be digital to save shipping costs :) Thank you for watching!
Thanks for creating! I'm also a fan of the vlog channel. Super excited for your solo!
Hey man love your videos. I was wondering if you could recommend me a GoPro that gets a decent audio recording of the marimba. I want to start doing head cams and stuff for marching band / winter drumline, and I'm not sure which to get. Also keep in mind I can't spend a lot on it, so I'm not rly asking for the best possible quality, just the best for the money. Thanks!
Jaden D Ah okay, anything from 4 onwards higher than Silver is pretty okay, just don't expect crystal clear audio unless it's the Black 😉 awesome idea though!
7:07 start of the warm up
1) I'd get that solo so fast and would put it on youtube as fast as I can.
2)excerise for chromatics?
Al Sky Fajardo Woooo at least I know now one person will play it! thank you 😄 and I'll come up with one for chromatics!
Al Sky Fajardo CF is a great chromatic exercise
There is a exercise called 7/4 (which is what my school calls it) and basically you pick any scale, and in 16th notes you play a chromatic scale up (ex : c major, c to c) then you play the actual scale back down in 8th notes.
*awaits impending Pius comment about Casey*
Kyle Spence Hahaha it'll happen for sure #thebeefisreal
#100Glock ftw, also there is finally a two mallet exercise for people like me so thank you
Also you realise how many subscribers you lost because of your dab right? xD
As always, another great video :)
What do you mean lost?? Dab = Gains!
Gotcha back Adam!
Kyle Spence haha, maybe it'll even out in then end then xD
Matthew Mcconnell Hahahaha you guys are hilarious, I should really be on negative subs after that scene... 😂
Do you tutor in america/california by any chance?
U guys should have use a earpiece and listen to those sound
Adam better Balter Contemporary Series Birch 84B Med. Soft Blue Yarn or Balter Universal Series Birch 182B Med. Hard to Hard Brown Yarn for begginner :)
hey Adam! you may have answered this already but is there a reason you relax your hands and let your fingers go at tacit, rather than reinforcing an upstroke or anything like that? just for comfort or endurance or?
cmcaggia3 That's a good question! I like to let it go because it means I don't feel as tense and I can play for longer periods of time this way, it may not look as stylish but it works better for me 😄
Adam Tan yeah that makes sense!!! I figured it was intentional. thanks :)
Do you have a video about tone quality on a marimba? Like what sound your trying to achieve while playing. I have started to become more in depth in practice and want to know if there is a baseline to strive for or not
video starts at 3:56
Please do more #TECHNIQUETALK! It's awesome! My special gratitude to you, man!
I will do my best! Thank you so much for watching!
do you have any exercises to do if you don't have a marimba.
Princelonestarr You can do any of my exercises without a marimba, just use your hands on a table or mallets on a practice pad 😀
I played on an Izzy today (June 7, 2017)
Josh Ito oooh did you like it?
Adam Tan life changing
Josh Ito no heart
Hey so i'm a freshman in highschool and ive been playing mallets for 2 years My teachers think i'm advanced enough to play the solo "Yellow After the Rain" it's a beautiful piece but i want to go to college for mallets. What do i have to try our with? (Snare, timpani etc.) and what solo should i learn next? Ive been playing Yellow After the Rain for 4 days and i have it memorized its just the execution now and just getting it down.
Virtual Genius I'm not too sure what you need for high schools in the US but most percussion auditions you'd need some snare skills and timpani yes! my friend Rob Knopper can help with those: czcams.com/users/robknopperstudio
and awesome that you've memorised Yellow! Keep it up 😀
When you bring your mallet up don’t go over a 15 stick height (A right angle)
Why no burst 0?
Too faaaaaaast actually I don't know why LOL
I thought you were supposed to be tight with the last 3 fingers from your hand,( middle, ring, pinky) and be comfortable or loose with your index and thumb.. I think he is doing it wrong...
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to build a marimba book try Corbandy Simple Instrument Crusher (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend got cool results with it.
