Roadside Rocket in Alabama May Blast Off

- The Saturn 1B Rocket has greeted visitors at a rest stop on the Alabama-Tennessee border since 1979. This piece of space history was donated by the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, in recognition of the three Saturn 1B Rockets that were developed in Huntsville, Alabama. Right now, Saturn 1B’s future is unknown. The rest stop is being remodeled and after decades in the elements, authorities are considering whether to fix up the 168-foot rocket or take it down.
They should restore the rocket and put it on display again, my mom saw the rocket back in 2021, it looks amazing
It would be far cheaper to build a close replica from scratch - this is a rocket after all, designed to be very lightweight so it can be launched into space; it wasn't built rugged like a road side sign normally would be. They never should have left it out exposed to the elements - it either needed a permanent building soon after installation, or the realization that eventually it would need to be demolished when it deteriorated too badly. We're actually well past that second point now.
It's sad that it will have to go, but we can blame that on whoever forgot that a rocket won't do well outdoors indefinitely. Maybe they assumed they would be gifted something newer by now, so they never thought it would be around this long.
@@chouseification Yeah alabama can't afford it, they spend all their money on football and the church.
Aww man I wish I would have read your reply I just posted the same thing you said, beat me to it, but it’s good to know I’m not alone, I would love to take a trip and check that out in person!!
I saw it last year
@@chouseification It's been there since 1979, 44 years, I think it's lasted pretty well. Also it's a part of aerospace history, you can't just build a replica.
I don’t even live in Alabama but I don’t know why it kind of made me sad to see it being taken away from its iconic location.
I live in Canada and am really ticked off about this!
I'm a bowl of tomato soup and this really made me boil.
I'm from Alabama, and I had a lot of good memorie meet with homies at the rocket
As someone from around Huntsville, most everyone loves seeing the rockets around. In a way, it makes you proud to call this place home and it's always a welcoming sight to see when you cross the state line.
@@JohnCooper-gm6mn I’m a ranch dressing and you can undress me 😊
Restore it, I can recall passing through not knowing of its existence. When I saw the rocket, I was perplexed. This made me research history and learn about Alabama’s involvement in the space program. History is worth saving.
Kinda ruins the whole point to restore it at that point just make a model
Alabama sent people to the moon. Huntsville, and the Marshall Space Flight Center to be more exact. People remember Houston and Cape Canaveral, but do not realize that it was all created in Alabama. Huntsville is still to this day a city where NASA conducts operations, and when we go back to the moon, most of what is built and tested to go there will happen in Huntsville.
@@Atlantis125 I agree. Don't restore it but maybe clean the mold off of it and make her look all purdy again.
That's American history guys! Should be made into a national landmark. Yes it may not be as pretty or stunning as mount Rushmore or Yellowstone but that amazing piece of history is part of America. I hope they can petition for it's safe restoration.
It probably won't survive restoration. It was designed to hold up to the structural stresses of keeping fuel together for five minutes of flight, then be discarded into the atmosphere to burn up. It wasn't meant to withstand the ages of weathering. It's probably a goner anyway with even the best intentions
My Rushmore ain’t all that great honestly. I went there like 5 months ago. At least that you can study other stuff instead of faces of white people that took over our land.
@Josh Tesina way to be pessimistic..
@@mrbikeman
I'm an engineer, if pessimism is why it takes to prevent a structural collapse into a kid than you may keep your optimism
@@Bosscheesemo you couldn't even make a logical sentence.
I live in Huntsville, and never actually noticed a rocket at the rest stop. but I live near the space and rocker center so I see the big rocket everyday and during the night(and you can see it during the day) the light shining on the rocket changes colors depending on the holiday or sometimes randomly, it’s really cool.
Liar
@@staygold2563 okay lol?
1000% I agree. I had to start looking for the rocket everytime I left alabama and coming home because it isn't truly something special too me but if they took it away oh I would be hurt because I will notice that it's gone. I live in Madison alabama so NASA is just another name too me that I've heard all my life
@@Bumbumbr-zu5gc I believe you but like how could you not notice a giant rocket in the middle of nowhere
@@actingtavis Same! I though have stopped a few times there, and look at it but if its gone, it will be missed.
No no no no nooooooo! I live in foley alabama & this rocket means so much to so many of us alabamians! The woman who said when she sees it she knows she's close to home took the words out of my mouth! Its one of our symbols of home! It would be so heartbreaking to see it go!!
Well, get everyone together and petition the local and state governments to keep it.
I used to live in Foley of Kenner Rd. This was years ago, my girlfriend worked at the RX pharmacy and soda fountain. I still have and wear the shirt.

Whenever my family traveled to Alabama on vacation, we always stopped by the rocket. I hated when they fenced off the area underneath it. That rocket is part of my family's vacation history, and I really don't want to see it go.
Edit: Just read that they've decided to get rid of it. Darn.
Idk why I love watching inside edition😂,A loyal viewer from Malaysia 🇲🇾

Because USA is the World's stage.
Same here from India. They put lot of effort in making very little videos.

@SiMSAM the DOG Don't need a green card mate, Thanks for your generosity anyways :)
Still have a VHS tape of us walking up to and under the rocket while on vacation 30 plus years ago. Hard to believe it's been that long.
It's a positive monument to an amazing part of not just US history but world history. Please restore and leave it be. It seems to mean so much to people in the area too.
I've driven from Pensacola FL to Nashville and beyond countless times and I stop here every time I'm coming back. KEEP IT THERE!
My first ever drive from Indiana to Florida in 1996, this rest stop and Atlas rocket just completely amazed me!
_It's a historic site for many and, should be restored and left there!_
42 years old man is crying pls dont take it down
I just recently moved to Huntsville, Alabama and I enjoy looking at it everyday I go go to work. Would hate to see this fascinating rocket go
I think the one in the video is at a different location and not the one you see at the space center, but I'm sure that would be sad for those in that area.
They should find a replacement or restore the rocket
DONT GET RID OF IT!
CAN'T REMOVE IT .. IT HAS BEEN THERE TO MANY YEARS !
IT IS NOW A HISTORIC MONUMENT IT STAYS FOREVERMORE ! ! ! 😚💋😘💞💖🇺🇸🙏😇👍
dey remove all robert lee historic monument

I agree but will will take it if they let me have it! My Father launched 3 of these! I will put this to good use for all to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a Alabaman I always look for it with all the way from out of state. It has guided me home 🏠. Please keep it
I live in Scottsboro and one of my favorite memories from school was going to the space and rocket center and seeing the rocket
when going thru Alabama and back I remember seeing the massive beast. we stopped there once and I made a video of it. there were lots of pigeons and a dead one next to it. I hate to see it gone and hope they don't take it down. if they do, replace it with SLS Block 2 rocket
Keep it there.

I was in TN recently buying a car, I drove to TN from PA. I decided to drive into AL just to say ive been there since I was so close, I saw this rocket and it was the best part of my whole trip. Leave it be or restore it
They should definitely fix it. History should be shared and be left to inspire.
I’ve been there and stopped just to see it.
The first thing that impressed me was it’s size.
The second thing that impressed me was how small it really was!
It was incredible that a rocket like that was capable of launching all that equipment, plus three men, up into space with everything they needed to get to the Moon and back!
All on that little rocket!!!
The US Air Force did a lot of low Earth orbit stuff in the early years of the program if you're interested check it out.
@@myschoolaccountitotallyuse2290 Sorry, but I was a kid when this thing launched.
I was under the impression that it was a LOT bigger than this.
But, like I stated, it carried enough “camping gear” to visit the Moon, and get those guys back!
That TINY LITTLE ROCKET!!!
The Saturn IB is the same family but much smaller than the Saturn V that was flown on the lunar missions. The Saturn V is massive and would stand more than 200 ft. taller than the one at the rest area.
I rely want to see this restored and put back up. You know, the computer was programmed by hand with millimeter sized coils of copper wire on a mesh representing ones and zeros. They were made by hand and sewn together. It would be terrible to see this beautiful conclusion to their work torn down
Those were the DSKY computers in the Command and Lunar Modules. It was also used on Gemini. The rocket's functions were controlled by the IBM-programmed Instrument Unit, which is the black band at the top of the S-IV B-200 (second stage) and below the conical Spacecraft Launch Adapter. The IU was programmed with punch cards and the programming transferred to discs which were installed in the IU's flight computers. The IU ignited the 8 mains, the S-1 B forward interstage retros, the S-IV B ullage motors and main motor, and controlled vehicle guidance, engine gimballing, and staging.
@@dalethelander3781 The IU in this rocket is flight hardwear. It's not a mock up or boiler plate thing, it's the real deal.
As a guy from Alabama please don’t take it it’s literally history just fix it up 🇺🇸
RIP THAT THINGN DOWN!!
Fix it up & leave it there!!! Leave Our History ALONE!!!
Don’t get rid of it. Very similar to the giant tire on i94 in Michigan. It’s a landmark for the locals.
As a space nerd that would literally plan an entire trip to Alabama solely for space tourism… I would say restore it. I would know EXACTLY what rest stop I would be going for, what town I’d be visiting. I’d wanna see it. I truly hope they restore it.
Leave things alone…. Keep the 🚀
I hope it stays erect.
They should ask the local people to vote.
Fix it up and keep it
It would be like getting rid of the water tower in south shore Boston or the dinosaur in the north shore
Fix it up or leave it alone
I live right next to hunstville, drove by this on my way home from nashville after buying a car, it would suck to see this go.
Keep the damn rocket 🚀 😤
That is a piece of history. It should be restored and remain.
Maybe they could gut the rocket and make a reinforced steel skeleton to hold the outside parts on. That way, it wouldn't look any different, but it wouldn't fall down on anyone.
Leave it standing and rename the renovated rest stop the "Rocket Reststop" lol
History can’t be destroyed, they gotta restore it
Sweet home Alabama
I live a few miles in TN used to always see the rocket heading down to Huntsville mall to hang with friends and coming home from a trip to FL or Gulf Shores I knew I was close to home hope we don't lose this piece of history
That's messed up they better restore it
I drove by that rocket so many times when traveling.
In a similarly obscure place, there is a Redstone Missile, the same type that took Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom on suborbital Mercury flights, in Warren, New Hampshire. It’s very cool because it’s just a big rocket in the center of a very tiny and spread out town.
So sad! But everything gets old. I have seen that rocket my whole life. I'm from Tennessee and have family in Alabama. It's bittersweet! 💚
Liar
@@staygold2563 why tf would anybody lie about that
dont take that down i love space and i would love to see this!
When I attended FSU and would drive back and forth from Indiana.. I always loved seeing the rocket. Was usually a half way-ish point for me. I hope it gets to stay.
I live on the other side of the country and think they should leave it up why mess with things that aren’t causing issues
now all is WOKE!!!!! Tear EVERYTHING down!!!!!
I used to pass by it on the way on the way to Louisiana!
I wish they would keep it in Alabama. I am from Huntsville and adore the rockets we have, but when I see the 1B I know I am close to home. If we can't keep it, I hope whoever gets it restores it to its former glory.
They're going to scrap it.
I've seen it many times. I loved seeing it. Always knew I was in Huntsville when you came up a day saw that white rocket standing tall.
I’ve driven past this rocket twice last year. I hope they dont remove it.
Fix it! Dont you dare take it down!
It deserves to be in a museum since it’s a historic landmark
They should refurbish it that's a part of America
For those who live in Alabama, call your state Reps and Senators and tell them this needs to be restored, not permanently removed. It would be a damn shame to take it down and never bring it back.
That's right you'll never get lost when we know our light houses. Life doesn't stop family always comes back
Y’all just need to restore it!! It was the best part about driving through Alabama!!!
From the late 1980's into the mid-90's I often drove from Birmingham to Cleveland, and went by that rocket many times.
SWEET HOME ALABAMA!!!
THATS WHAT IM THINKING LOL
Oh my gosh 🤦🏼♂️
Spent the first 29 years of my life in north Alabama. Now I live in Cincinnati and that rocket is a waypoint on my way back home when I come to visit. I’d hate for it to be taken down. Needs to be restored like the Saturn V in Huntsville.
In Huntsville AL you can see a rocket, space shuttle and a few other things from the major roadway that passes thru.
I just hope that people recognize how much importance this piece of History has with it
If you haven’t ever visited the space and rocket center please do it’s amazing with many pieces of history
Let’s build a rocket garden in Huntsville for the rocket center
They have one further in on Redstone Arsenal if you have Base Access. V1,V2,Redstone,Atlas,Mercury and a few others. On Rideout Rd by the NASA HQ. Plus several at Marshall Space Center, including a Saturn 'in stages' on it's side, another Saturn standing upright (quite the landmark!) and what has special meaning to me,a Nike-Hercules & I think also a Pershing? (Father was a 34 yr Army NCO, every second posting we had from 1968-81 was RSA,and these were the two programs my father spent the most time working with....including serving as an instructor at Redstone!)
My dad worked as a drafter on the Saturn rocket project at Martin Marietta. Those were the days of real company culture and community. Going to show this to dad. Will bring back some memories for him.
Pretty soon theyll put up a chinese rocket and say the chinese were first to the moon
FIX IT UP NOT TAKE IT DOWN! I don't even live in the US but I'd like for it to stay. So many people enjoy seeing it there and it even became a landmark! I know that over the years it COULD fall over due to weathering and aging and whatnot but then, fix it up!
This is a piece of history is this country needs to be preserved
My Father launched 3 of these! I will put this to good use for all to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pretty cool! I love stuff like this hopefully it stays! Communities that want something bad enough usually find ways.
Nice to see my home state on this show finally
Why take it down?
It's structural integrity is being called into question. It's nearly 200 ft tall if it were to collapse somehow it would absolutely kill/hurt people at worst or damage property at minimum. I'm not too sure about Alabama but if they have tornados or hurricanes keeping a multi ton rotting rocket around for pictures is a incredible risk for virtually 0 reward.
I visited Huntsville, Alabama Space Center in sixth grade. I think that is a landmark that people look for.
Different rocket
if u love it so much why dun u marry it
@@teamzoey3923 trust me, I’ve tried 😭

They should keep it there! History is important and the people in this area obviously love it
if I ever go the the US I'd love to see it. I've also never been the that state before
After all the Alabama memes I didn't expect a rocket to come out of it
fix it up!!! as a member of the Huntsville community; id deal with the slightly higher taxes for this piece of history and iconic landmark.
I hate when things like this happens. Leave it! I've never heard of this. Such a cool roadside attraction.
Oh man I love flying my drone around that rocket!
Amazing. I'm from New Zealand. I'd love to see this.
I hate that it’s being taken down. I remember stopping every summer on my way to Tennessee to stay with my cousins. I have fond memories of visiting the rocket as a child. I really hope they replace it with something just as awesome for future generations to enjoy.
Keep it up
There’s also one in Cordele Georgia and a few years back it was discovered that it still had fuel in it and could had launched. Repair & refuel them both and have “a special package” inside to use as a last line of defense
Should clean it up a bit, and probably make a little museum around it, I'm sure many would like to get up closer and higher to it.
I love this road stop! It’s an annual stop on our drive to Destin.
This is a very important part of our countries history. It absolutely must be restored. To do anything else would be a dishonor to all who had a part in that achievement. Also to those brave souls that gave their lives.
Need to get the governor on this, that rocket can’t leave
I just drove by it a couple weeks ago for the first time. Why would they take it down!?!? Looks awesome
Im gonna miss the Saturn 4 😢
There was the Saturn 1, the Saturn 1B, and the Saturn V, no Saturn 4. The second stage was designated S-IV B-200 and the third stage of the Saturn V was S-IV B-500. The difference being the -500s could be restarted.
Fix it!! It's Awesome!😸
That's sad to hear. That's like one of the three most exciting things in Alabama.
I’m in mobile, Alabama down here on the gulfcoast I haven’t been that far up north Alabama but I say fix it up, and put it back they say they know their home when they see that rocket that’s the same about the Dolly Parton bridge we know we’re almost home when we’re on that bridge so I can relate to my north Alabama folks.
That is an iconic history right there. don't just throw it away like trash but better restore it and display it somewhere else.
Used to enjoy seeing that rocket after a long trip driving from cleveland, ohio to decatur, alabama. was nice to know my trip was ending and the rest area was just around the bend and time for a nap. Hopefully they do something else there, if they lose it.
Don't they realise how rare that is. They would be crazy to let that go anywhere.
I took a trip to Alabama for Christmas and saw the exact rocket
Poor Saturn 1b. It's been neglected. It's been sitting in Alabama weather for so long.
