Excellent video! Exactly what I needed
Super grateful for you putting up this video. Finally helped me diagnose the issue on my d110.
Thank you so much for this how to video. You saved me from spending hundreds of dollars. I was quoted $600 to $1000 to do this job.
Glad it helped! $600+ is outrageous. Takes less than 1.5hrs to do this job. $40 in parts and materials.
Good job showing us how to do the head gasket. You move fast, like you've done this before. I have not, but have gained great confidence from watching you do it.
Wanted to say thanks, saved me from having to likely buy a new mower. Great vid.. i did have to do the valve adjustment twice.. but it worked the second time! 😅
Thx man. My gasket is coming from Amazon in 2 days 👍👍👍
Man this is great stuff…a video like this makes me feel so confident to buy one of these with blown head gasket
thankyou my john deer 110 just started smoking bad and oil out the fuel pump , blown head gasket. replaced and no issues thank you!!!
I got the 115 an its doing the same thing. I started it yesterday after its sat all winter an that mug smoked the whole neighborhood up. Then it shut off an wouldn't start back. So i removed the carb an cleaned it real good an it fired right up byt still smoking. So yeah thanks for the video, Ill go get a gasket kit later an fix it.
This exact head gasket issues seems to be an epidemic for Briggs in this family of single cyl engines. The cylinder head wall area near the galley apparently isn't wide enough. Around here and on CZcams this is a widely known common failure of Briggs even after a repair. They made a new head gasket design different to help but I've seen it really doesn't help long term. The failure rates are ridiculous even on low hour engines.
Great video--really helped me out with the excellent step by step process. I just have to put the hood cover back on and HOPE she cranks!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Awesome!
Perfect, thanks alot. Running great now!!
Great to hear!
Thanks for the video man! Very informative
Thanks for the video
Great video. This has really helped me. Is it OK to use a wire brush on the engine block? I see that you did it so it must be ok.
You can use a wire brush on aluminum, go slow and easy.
0:48 That's where mine is: was planting grass seed with an aerator/spreader, then suddenly >pop!< mosquito fogger!
Do you have to remove the muffler in order to remove the exhaust pipe because this is a LA125. Although they're not working on LA125's, I see everybody else just disconnecting the top of the exhaust pipe from the engine, then lean it to the side, or pull the pipe out of the muffler from there.
You don't have to remove the muffler. I did because I sandblasted and painted it.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic Thanks for the quick response.
Great video...thanks
Fantastic video. This was my first time changing a head gasket and you explained everything very well. I have a different model so a few things were slightly different but overall it went great. One question though, mine was leaking oil before I started. There was oil in the valve cover and in the space where the rods go. After I was done I expected to have to add oil but the dipstick is still reading full. Did you have to add any oil? I’m not sure how I lost so much oil but didn’t have to add any when it was all said and done.
Thx. I did an oil changed after.
what if one of the rods is bent?
Check the valve guide. Make sure it’s still flush with the head. I’ve straightened them out in my vice before and reused them. I’d buy a new one.
May sound like a silly question, but do I need to drain the oil first?
I just did an oil change right before firing it up, and realizing the head gasket was blown. Oil ain't getting any cheaper.
No need to drain it, oil is still good.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic
Thank you very much.
Did you buy new head bolts? I’ve seen some talk that old bolt heads will result in and head gasket job again in the near future.
I always use the same ones.
My LA125 has the same issue! I’m trying this first. 👍👍 what was the part number for the head gasket?
Part number is MIU11490. (If this is the problem you have, it will smoke a lot when it’s hot)
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic definitely the head gasket thanks, got it from the dealership $21.00. What did you use on the cylinder to clean it with the drill?
@@Chief_5 I used a razor blade than a wire brush. Bought a set off amazon. Any local hardware store has them. You can do a search on Amazon for "drill wire brush set". Then spray "brake cleaner" to degrease it.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic I used the wire brush, put it back together with new filters and oil, works again! 👍

How do i find the compression stroke that's what i'm struggling on...😢
Take the spark plug out and rotate the motor by hand look until the piston reaches the top. If the exhaust valve is open, you need to rotate it one more full turn.
Both valves should be closed.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic How can I tell if they're closed The springs will be disengaged right ?
@@DOA-SPACELY. Yes. The rocker arms should be a tad loose and the same height.
I got it thank you so much
I have a john deere 100 series riding mower. I wonder how much a head gasket replacement would cost to get done? I am not mechanical. I googled it and it said $1,200. That can't be right, that's how much I paid for the mower brand new. Anyone know roughly what it would cost in Ohio?
$25.00 for a head gasket. 2hrs of labour. Probably need the oil changed ($20) and filter ($20). Total $200.00
Nice video… I believe I have a blown head gasket but I also have a leak from what appears to be the lower gasket. Could a blown head gasket cause this? Or would a blow head gasket cause a leak at all?
Thanks!!
What lower gasket you’re talking about. Thx.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic
Possibly the sump gasket? It’s the lowest gasket closest to the frame to engine mount.
@Corey Johnston Check for an oil leak around your oil drain tube. It tend to back out and leak oil.
A blown head gasket allows compression to leak into the crankcase and tends to push oil out of lots of places, possibly even the seal you are mentioning. Also check for oil leaking from the diaphragm fuel pump vent, that's a telltale sign of a blown head gasket
