  • MICA and its Mount Royal School of Art M.F.A. program welcomeD internationally renowned and MacArthur Award-winning artist Xu Bing to discuss his global art practice. The lecture was followed by a conversation with the artist and MICA President Samuel Hoi.
    Xu is known for large-scale installations that incorporate a variety of materials, such as tobacco, silkworms and corn husks, that address issues of cultural and national identity, social change, environmental advocacy, and surveillance.
    Xu Bing is deeply engaged in a global art practice that helps us envision a just and sustainable world. Internationally renowned and firmly rooted in our time, he is a master artist and an artist for the ages. He reveals how we work, how we see ourselves and how we treat each other. His concerns include cultural and national identity, social change and surveillance. His work is monumental and technically and conceptually complex, employing diverse materials and strategies from invented language to tobacco, silkworms, corn husks and dust.
    He was born in Chongqing, China, and his artistic sophistication, political conscience, and far-reaching imagination has led to exhibitions in China, Japan, Australia, Africa, Canada, the United States and Europe at venues like the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan. He is a graduate with an M.F.A. from Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing where he has also taught and served in academic leadership. He has been included in the Venice Biennale three times and honored with a MacArthur Fellowship, a lifetime achievement award from the Southern Graphics Council, the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize, the Wales International Visual Art Prize and a US Department of State Medal of Arts.
