Mother deer have to leave fawn alone so that she can go get food. They do it all the time. That's why they say if you encounter a fawn, and it does not look injured, leave it alone. The mother deer will be back to get the fawn after she has finished eating.

they are going to feeding grounds more than likely the fawn can cover more ground by road! preditors do the same thing so she has to get him off the road at night.
Travis Albrecht It didn't seem that the mom was very concerned or protective. Makes me worried and sad. But you said that they were together in awhile later? That seems like an awful dangerous time to leave the newborn. Poor little thing.
The little fawn looked very weak. It was probably born just a few hours before you encountered them. Non the less I hope for this little fella that it's mother didn't abandoned him/her and that it gained some strength...
Just to let you all know. Mom and baby were together when we left them. The fawn was not abandoned.
