    Hey everyone! Today we're reviewing the Sire P5 5 string bass. I was very impressed with the 4 string version, and this time we're putting the 5 through its paces. Let's do this!
    This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

    You should definitely make a review of the new Sire P5R, keeps the same stuff as the p5 with the addition of a more traditional rosewood fingerboard on top of the roasted maple neck and new upgraded pickups that they say are "fatter" which i guess means they are overwound pickups with more low and high end!
    And also some new colors!

    Awesome review, lobster. 😎🤘🏻🎸 that bass sounds phenomenal. Normally I’m a jazz bass fan, but I also happen to like precision basses too. Especially since I became a neck pick kind of guy in recent years. It sounds incredible with a pick. And I’ll bet it sounds killer with distortion. Both would make a great metal bass tone. Other than that, this is a great bass. Very versatile and useful for all music genres.

    I have that P bass in that colour in a 4 string configuration and I love it ! The green colour really looks amazing, esp. with that pickguard. As other people have mentioned in the comments, the neck feels very comfortable, makes it very easy to play up and down the neck and the bass is a joy to play. :)

    I always wanted a Fender Precision but my brother talked me into getting a Sire and a 5-string. I don't regret it. It has a beautiful sound, the color is green and everyone adores it. It has a great neck and it's easy to play, and the tuning holds up. Mrs. Bass Guitar.

    Appreciate the review, Lobster! I've been eyeing one these since release. I've been playing a Squier VM P Bass V since 2015 and am actually thinking of selling it to get my hands on the Sire. The Squier has been a great bass. It's really not that far off in feel/tone from the US P 5s that I've tried but I've never been able to like the candy apple red finish. The mint green Sire definitely seems a worthy replacement.

    I bought a 10 year old ‘64 Precision in college, and can attest to the fact that vintage P’s were always a little honky in the mids and light in the low end,at least with round wounds. The secret to a good Precision is how they take EQ, not how they sound raw into the board.

    Great review. I really like my V5s and P5, but they are really hard to find. I also find it tough that its not a standard fender 5 screw bridge, so swapping out the underwhelming bridge is difficult. I really like the throaty pick up and the neck. They are also very pretty, as far as fit and finish. Wish they were easier to find.

  • @braddietzmusic2429
    @braddietzmusic2429 Před rokem +22

    I really like the elegant simplicity of this instrument and the quality, and the price point. The thing is, when I’m playing in the Modern Country/class Classic Country/Classic Rock band, I am using a five-string active Jazz Bass. I know throughout the show, I’m using ALL three pickup combinations at some point or another, as well as tone shaping from the three band active electronics where I can adjust tone song by song or stage by stage as necessary. I have significant hesitation in thinking about gigging with a single pickup and passive instrument. Even a five string one. Indeed two of my three Precision four string basses have the two-pickup P/J format, and even that extra pickup alone (with or without active electronics) offer significant tone shaping options. Yes, I know Sire offers the active five string P/J. But… this is interesting in its admittedly limited simplicity.

    • @PhullyNo1
      @PhullyNo1 Před rokem +2

      I agree, for 599 it’s a good deal but would you ever use it if you had a better 5 string option? Probably not. I personally have a hard time commuting to to a 5 string non-active bass. Just because it’s hard to eq with the preamp. Externally you can shape the tone but do you want to?

    Sires true competition here is Yamaha, who make a very competitive 5-string bass also, I have a 700 series which is active but the 400 series is their passive offering and they're very well built. I'm going for a P5 fretless, that's going to be exciting to play.

  • @rickrolli7091
    @rickrolli7091 Před rokem

    Hey Lobster. I can hear what your saying and playing with that bass. It is a bit high mid driven. It's not bad to be able to give a boisterous wide open tone and sounds normal at the mid tone position. Versus a P at the wide open position and it's not bright enough. That's actually a decently setup bass for some versatility. Again, I appreciate the honesty and good review. Until we groove again ✌️😎👍🎸🦞

    Thank you for the review Lobster. Awhile ago I managed to put hands on a Squier VM 5-string P, and it is also a VERY punchy creature, not like a P-bass at all (and I love it this way 😁). I think that is thanks to the maple fingerboard.
    I would love to get a fretless 5-string P5, but am worried about this maple fingerboard, with maple being too soft for a fretless and all that..

    I have the red one, and it feels and plays just wonderfully. The only thing I don't like is the string retainer bar, especially the way it presses down on the low B string such that it jumps up at the nut. I am going to replace that. The B and E string died rather quickly, but I have had that before with d'Addarios (which I guess it comes with). Other than that, it is a very nice bass with a big sound.

  • @topcat2069
    @topcat2069 Před rokem +3

    I would rather have the strong mid range, than a bass that has to be treated with the amp to get that voicing.
    I think it's easier to tone up the bass on the amp, just adding to that baked in voicing.
    I was playing through a GK set up that could handle and EQ settings, so this Bass would sound amazing through that rig.

    The b-string lacks a little bit of low end punch and definition imo. But that's just to expect for a traditional F-style fivestring. The overall sound is just awesome, an man, this color! Matches perfectly with the dark tortoise pickguard. Just beautiful.

  • @chrishansen-crowley3287
    @chrishansen-crowley3287 Před rokem +1

    I just got one of these for $641 and I’m returning it. The B string sounded floppy (didn’t realize it was a 125, maybe getting a heavier string would help) and the neck had a hump that killed any note played on the fifth fret. A fret leveling probably could fix it, but I’m not doing that on a brand new bass. It’s too bad since it looks beautiful and the roasted maple neck feels great.

    I own and really like this bass. I have a 130 B (stock strings) and it really impressed me for a 34" scale. The tension is just right.

      @@wharrgarblstudios I have not. But I would think dropping a whole step is a lot to ask of the 34" scale length. Or you might have to go up to a 135 gauge string (I use a 130), which might be like playing a cable. You should try to get your hands on the P5 to try it yourself.

    Hi Lobster. I'm not a fan of P-Bass five-strings. I feel that the tone suffers on the b string and to me, sounds like it's not really a part of the instrument. I think the same about five-string J-style basses; very few manufacturers IMO, have got that right although I've always been curious as to wether a reverse neck would be a solution? I've owned a few 'fives' over the years and certainly one of the best I owned was a Lakland 55 which was 35' scale. These days, I play a Dingwall ABZ-5 and it seems that fan-frets are the way to go; not for everyone but for me, yes. At the end of the day though, you can't beat a P-Bass and that's why they're still selling. I have a MIJ with an Aguilar replacement pickup, strung with flats and it puts a huge smile of my face everytime I pick it up!
    Many thanks for your reviews and 'level playing field' approach. You're a credit to the bass playing community. Glad you're feeling better. Kind regards, Chris.
