  • Though difficult to imagine, Revelation holds out a promise of a New Heavens and New Earth with renewed humanity at its center. Our role in that New Creation is more than just rest from our former struggles. It is the powerfully human promise that the rescued will participate in God’s reign over the Earth. This promise has echoes of Israel’s vocation and its full embodiment in Jesus’s vocation.
    What aspects of renewed Creation most comfort or confuse you?

    Another Monday and another challenging teaching from you! I loved the part about those of us called into this Christian Vocation having something more to do when the Kingdom comes. As an active, fairly driven individual, I can think of nothing worse than doing nothing for all eternity - resting as it were. Your teaching, that we will become a kingdom of priests given a task to perform with God, not only makes sense Scripturally, but it makes sense in my inner psyche. Furthermore, the desire of God to include all people who worship God, as part of the Kingdom regardless of divisions they have conjured up for themselves on this earth, is right on. Enough of the "people" made divisions - God is about unity and wholeness. Thank you for another great Monday!

    This brings me to the beginning of the bible where God gives us as humans a task to look after "the earth" . It needs a kind of steward and work. but at the same time if God is the creator and we are made in his image, we also bare this "creator spirit" , and He gives us lot of freedom. for me this is an invitation to make it beautiful and to be creative. I think this calling /jobs remains in the new world. The more 'wonders' sience reveals, the more mindblowing His creation is. Also how more complex. We need to be humble and work together

    I wonder how what I do on this side of eternity, is preparing me for the new creation? Since listening to your teaching on this subject several months ago, I have been praying and thinking about this subject. As a child I would pray ‘fit me for heaven to live with thee there’, of course imagining a space floating in clouds and shining light. However, now I a pray ‘fit me for the new earth to live with thee there’.

    I wonder 'how much will (our) sin be remembered in the new earth and heaven?' when we will declare
    “You are worthy, ---- , You were slaughtered and with your own blood, You purchased a people for God”.

      That is an intriguing question. I don’t think it has been tackled on Ask NT Wright Anything. It would definitely require a fuller exploration. One might suppose something like our current reality. I can ‘remember’ a sin committed against me, yet still love and forgive the person who committed it. How much more so God in the New Creation?

  • @emmayum22
    @emmayum22 Před rokem +2

    Revelation is one of my favorite books of the Bible because of all the hope for the next and new kingdom it stores. I’ve always been excited about the return of Christ and have thought many times on what it might look like.
    Do you suppose there will be some chosen to be in heaven and some chosen to stay on the new Earth?
    I can hardly imagine what the might look like, but whatever it is, it will be good. And I can’t help but wonder if I will be chosen for Heaven or Earth, is that even is the case.

    • @NTWrightOnline
      @NTWrightOnline  Před rokem +3

      That’s an interesting question! Thanks for asking. The picture the Bible presents is one which doesn’t have that level of separation, but rather that ultimate end is when heaven and earth fully overlap, come together. That’s the creational intent in Genesis, what the Temple/Sabbath represented and enacted, what Jesus’s death, resurrection, & ascension put into effect, and what we live with (though incomplete) in the present through our life as the church. The New Creation makes that integration of the lives of Heaven and Earth a complete reality. To your pondering, in a sense, the people of God are chosen for both! (Prof. Wright talks about this theme in lots of places, so any of his books our courses could explore this further if you wanted to.)

    A wonderful exposition but one that raises questions. One of these relates to language - the use of the idea of being a kingdom (of priests). In scripture the priest acts as a kind of mediator between God and the people. How does this work out in the recreated earth?

    @shirleyboberg84 Před rokem +2

    If we are to be priests now and even more so when Heaven and earth merge, what do you think he means for what we will be doing? I understand that Jesus said there will no longer be marriage as we have now, but what do you suppose we will have? We will all be worshipping together, I understand that. I am curious about whether we will be with those we love from this world. My husband is my best friend here, I know that more will be given and or taken away. It is sort of confusing when I think too much about it. Another opinion would be helpful. Thanks.

    • @NTWrightOnline
      @NTWrightOnline  Před rokem +3

      Good questions, Shirley. It is likely many others wonder about these things as well. We can trust and find hope that with the inauguration (in full) of God's new creation we will have obligations to steward the needs of the created realm in ways that will be both honouring to God and nurturing to human beings. But, yes, it can be difficult to imagine what it will look like or exactly what we will do. Our great hope and joy is that God is, and will be, our great Shepherd and our forever friend and will dwell with his family from every tribe, tongue, and nation, in a place of no tears.

    Why a lamb for each household? Doesn’t that imply each home had its own high priest? Also, why where the Egyptian firstborn used as an exchange for Israel’s firstborn? Then there’s the Levites, who became each an exchange for the firstborn of Israel, if I remember correctly, from my Torah study.

    When we bring healing to the nations, does that mean people will still make mistakes and need healing? I’m hoping there will be room for my loved ones who were turned off from God , because they heard he was angry and mean and was going to punish them for an eternity in hell. Their hearts are hard, but I love them. I don’t think I can be happy in paradise, but if they saw God as he truly is, I believe their heart would melt. They would cry and Nash their teeth! Then they would rejoice in his open arms. Wishful thinking, however the majority of Christian’s say this is a false hope. The day my loved ones die will be the day I must ask - do I truly believe in this God? For now I have hope that God will melt their hearts before their time is up. Just maybe if we /I can rethink the way we have presented the gospel, we can restore Gods good name, and this will look like good news, not the bad news of doom and Armageddon for most of mankind.

      It seems to me that a God who is Love, would give people another chance even after they have passed through the doors of death. God's time is very different from our time, at least that seems to be what he says a number of times in Scripture. Surely, we will not be judged totally and for all eternity by what we do, say, or believe in this puny little lifetime?

    • @glyndavies8061

      This has always bothered me as well because I can think of many good people turned away from God not because of Jesus but by what came out of the mouths of angry, mean-spirited Christians. I believe in judgement, heaven and hell, and salvation through Christ alone. But what happens to those who never got to hear the words of Jesus but only a distorted version from some preacher? My comfort has come from John 5: 24-30 which I understand to mean that everyone at some time will truly hear Jesus's voice - even after death - and those who then listen and accept his word will have eternal life. I pray that this is so.

    • @AllAiNow

      Rhonda, there are numerous verses that strongly imply many if not all will turn to Christ after this life in the next age. Some even think that is why the elect are differentiated and predestined in this age. Here are just a couple of verses that may help you. Isaiah 45:23 By myself I have sworn; truth has gone from my mouth, a word that will not be revoked: Every knee will bow to me, every tongue will swear allegiance.
      Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:10-11 In Romans the Greek word used for swear allegiance carries the meaning of honoring joyfully and willfully. The hell taught by the majority of Christians is carried over from the early and middle centuries when pagan superstitions prevailed. The lake of fire in Revelation I (and many others) believe is a refiners fire much like the allusion in Malachi chapter 3.
      I hope that gives you some comfort regarding your loved ones. The important thing to remember is God loves that as much or more than you do, for we are all his children.

    So he is referring to the period after the millennial reign, correct? He is thinking after the Great White Throne judgment? It’s confusing because the seals and most of revelation it is talking about seems to refer to the millennial reign, but I do t know that Christ and the Saints reign on the earth, therefore do the priests also not reign on the earth in the millenium?

    Dr. Wright, Revelation 5:9-10 is not about some future reality in which Christians are priests. Rather, the content depicts all the redeemed people of God, past, present, and future, regardless of time and place. For though it says Jesus “purchased ... persons from every tribe and language and people and nation” and “made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth,” John already said “Jesus ... has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father” (Rev. 1:6). Therefore, Revelation 5:9-10 depicts the sum of the priests in the kingdom of God from every generation until Christ's return, i.e., the Church, but who manifest on earth generationally.
    Concerning the Church and this period in which “they will reign on the earth” as “priests” in a “kingdom” (Revelation 5:10 and 1:6), Revelations 20:6 also says that “they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.” The thousand years, then, is symbolic of the Church era.
