WHY YOU NEED TO THINK BEFORE YOU BUY: Chanel vs Dior CLASSIC INVESTMENT BAGS

  • The Chanel 2.55 Reissue, Classic Flap and the Lady Dior - these are all pretty “classic” and “safe” bags to buy, along with Hermes of course!
    But there are a few things that I think you should WAIT and evaluate/be aware of before you make your purchase. This is especially for those of you who want a ‘once in a lifetime’ bag (where you only want to buy and own one). Or even those of you who want to own just a small collection of safe, long-term investment items (financial and wearability)
    So which do I think is best and why? In this I’m going to cover a brief history of the CHANEL 2.55, CHANEL CLASSIC FLAP & CHANEL 2.55 REISSUE. As well as the popular LADY DIOR.
    I’m then going to talk about some pretty big things that are think are worth you factoring-in before you drop your hard earned money:
    Which brand is best?
    Which is best for financial investment?
    Is there a best colour to buy?
    Does the size I choose matter?
    Enjoy!

      I was definitely one of those living it up in the 80s. And yes, we were all about the logos. Unfortunately I was a Gucci girl and my bags did not stand the test of time. I thought that all Chanel was a bit "grannyish" back then, oh if only I had been wiser I could have had a vintage Chanel bag in my wardrobe!! By the way I checked my bags after your storage advice video and can happily report back they are all ok.

    Sophie I was young, working at my first grown up job, and newly married in the 80s. Everything was possible. It was the era of the working girl. Women wore suits that came from male clothing lines like Brooks Brothers but worn with silk blouses.Handbags were just becoming a status item. You were trying to look successful but also serious. I much prefer Dior, the experience is so different to that of Chanel. Dior boutiques are gorgeous, the experience screams luxury, and their bags are so much more chic imo. Chanel puts out the same things over and over again and the quality of their bags and constant price increases are insane. I don’t purchase my bags with the intention to sell, so resale value isn’t top of mind to me.

      Definitely. But I do think, one should always buy what the heart prefers instead of just looking at bags as investment. I’d rather invest in stocks or experience than try to see bags as investment. One should buy bags to enjoy them and I personally dislike the idea of owning only high-value bags for that reason instead of just buying pieces out of pure enjoyment.

      Dior sales reps are really nice and not judgemental at all. In Chanel they are better than LV in terms of service but I think they kind of judge people when they walk in the door based on how they look. Dior don’t seem to do that and they’ve let me try on bags and talk to me without pressuring. That’s just my experience but if you are saving, save for the one you really like personally!

      Dior is not good with service. They basically asked me to throw my Patent Dior lady away when the handles left a mark on the patent side after a few months of storage. Was shocking as I had bought it from the very boutique I brought the bag to.
      Meanwhile , Chanel has repaired my accessories and replaced the hardware of some of the old 255s
      countless times.
      Damage to Chanel items was more due to rough handling ( young kids etc ) and yet, I get no questions asked when I take them back again and again. I would think the Dior issue was a manufacturer quality issue but Dior told me to throw the bag away instead 😵

    I started working full time in 1981 so I was out of school, really glad to see the back of that, and on the loose in the world for the first time and I had an absolute ball. The world was a very different place back then, a lot more secure. You could always be sure of getting a job because there were more jobs than people and you could walk in and out of them whenever you chose. I bought my first car and traveled a lot. It was a really fun time to be young.
    I loved the fashions too. Of course some were over the top and too out there for me, but I loved the pastel coloured suits, floral dresses and silk blouses.
    I was a teenager in the 70s which was a truely ugly era. Younger people now who say they love the 70s fashions would think very differently if they had had to live through them. Fashion as a matter of personal choice and finding your own style like people do today was completely unacceptable.back then. It was totally dictatorial. You wore what was in and if you didn’t you were labeled a dag and punished for it. Individuality was definitely not encouraged. I remember being addicted to classic movies and constantly complaining to my mother, why aren’t we allowed to wear pretty, feminine clothes anymore? Then along came Princess Diana and everything suddenly changed. People now have no idea how powerful her influence was. Pretty and feminine were back in and I really made the most of it. I became totally addicted to Laura Ashley floral dresses. They were very similar to the sort that Dolce And Gabana make now. Lilysilk make very 80s inspired blouses, they were everywhere back then.
    And money went so much further. I used to fill up the petrol tank in my first car for $5 and gold was worth around $100 an ounce, so most of my friends and family, and of course myself, travelled to South East Asia every year for what was a very cheap holiday and bought heaps of fine jewellery. I suppose you can tell I really loved living in the 80s.

    • @KarinaSwan
      @KarinaSwan Před 2 lety

      Hello, it was interesting to read what you wrote 🙂. Can you be more specific about what exactly did you not like about the 70's fashion?
      I love some 70's light and flowy boho dresses, colours and florals. It has a romantic style, which is feminine. I suppose you are referring to clothes that were more hippie, out there and all over the place? Also a lot more jeans?
      I guess it also depends on where one lived, because styles were slightly different, unlike it is today with the internet everyone ends up being more or less the same.
      As for what everyone should wear and not have their own personality shown through style, I'd argue that it was like that throughout in every decade and century (I studied fashion history, this is why I'd say it's a fact). Even today, yes we can have more say about it, but overall it's still "dictated". What's interesting is that most people don't even want to find their own style 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @suzannehall5200
      @suzannehall5200 Před 2 lety

      Hi Karina. What I didn’t like was pretty much all of it. The huge bell bottom pants, polyester body shirts, clunky platform shoes and clogs, super mini skirts worn with knee high boots, shapeless smocks, and don’t even get me started on menswear. Watch and episode of Benny Hill or the beginning of No Sex Please We’re British on CZcams and you will get the picture. Everyone really looked that bizarre. I was so over jeans after the 70s that it’s taken until now for me to want to wear them again. I used to watch classic movies on tv and long to be allowed to wear pretty clothes but pretty was not tolerated. That would get you a beating at recess at school. Home decor was a whole education in hideousness that people wouldn’t believe now unless you had been there. It was an era that I didn’t enjoy one bit and the 80s couldn’t come soon enough.

    I also don’t think that self-preserving voice in my head (when it comes to saving for a rainy day) will ever really go away b/c of how I was brought up. The ‘investment and longevity aspect’ of buying bags will inevitably influence my purchases b/c of that. Also, I do love that the 2.55 reissue in particular reads to me as understated luxury. As someone who gravitates towards utilitarian bags like Celine’s classic, Fendi’s peekaboo, and Loewe’s puzzle... I think either the 2.55 or Classic Flap feels like my jam. Adore the utilitarian compartments too!

    I only have one Chanel (lemon) and I'm pretty content with it. I want more Lady Dior though - I just love their colour choices, I don't like pink and they make it look good.
    Enjoy the rest of your day, Sophie and thank you so much for making time to create helpful content ♥♡
