Ring king have a special place in my heart. It was the first boxing game I ever played. I remember having been sent home from school because I got chickenpox. When I got home, my brother borrowed the game from one of his friends. As a blind gamer and boxing fan, I played the game for days, and even offered to buy the game from my brother's friend when he wanted his game back, but no dice. Ever since that day, the game continued to elude me even as the Nintendo entertainment system died. That is, until last week. I was finally able to get a good gaming emulator on my phone, and obviously this was the first one I downloaded.

I was all about boxing when I was a kid. I grew up watching Tyson fights on Pay Per View and of course was a huge Punch Out fan. Punch Out was one of the few games I still played on my Nes after getting my Genesis in '89. I still played Punch Out even after getting my Snes because it was so damn cool. I finally put it down when Super Punch Out released for the Snes.
At any rate, I did not know this game existed let alone had an Nes port. I can't believe how clean and close it looked to the arcade original. Had I known I would have been all over it. Man, I wish it had been ported to the Genesis as well because it could have been arcade perfect with the extended RPG elements. That equals an insta-buy for me. I was so taken by boxing that I purchased Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing for my Genesis the minute I found out it was a thing. The graphics were out of this world but after 20 or 30 minutes of play I was already over it. Too bad, this game would have been a much better buy. :(

Nice video dude. I played this game a few times back in the day and enjoyed it. There used to be a mobile fairground that would show up at the wasteground at the bottom of my road when I was a kid and it had an arcade. I'd play many games there including Turtles, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Out Run and this. I always thought it was quite fun and never knew there was home ports (the NES or MSX not being very popular at all here in the UK). Thanks again for the great content aas always! :)

I've loved this game ever since I first played it in 1991 when I was 7 or 8 years old. It's easy to pick up and play but there's a level of strategy that comes into play where if you think you will button mash your way to the end that will stop after fighting about 3 or 4 boxers. The added touch of increasing ring stats through training also adds an extra dimension to the game where sometimes the slightest upgrade can make or break how well you do for the next match. Believe it or not, the controversy with your trainer in between matches I literally never noticed it the entire time I played the game but after the memes started going around it's like...now I can't unsee it lol 😇

this just brings back so many memories... first, the intellivision boxing. my friend next door had the intellivision and i had the atari and colecovision. anyhoo, when we played games like baseball, he wouldn't let me use the key card with the moves so he could beat me easily. well, boxing didn't really require more than a couple moves, so i always beat the tar out of him. he even went as far as saying he dropped a brick on the system and broke it to avoid playing me. now, as far as ring king goes, especially on the nintendo, well, i got really mad at that game and threw it at the wall! the plastic case broke, but if you take the screws out and reset the chip, it still worked. i still have that game. it still works and i still get really mad at it, so rarely play it.

As a child I do have vague memories of seeing this arcade game under two different titles and wondering why they were "so similar". I tried to play it once at a restaurant or a convenience store, I believe, but couldn't really figure it out. I was no good at boxing games because I just wanted to mash the buttons and hope for the best results, paying no attention to strategy.
I remember at the mall we had the 1987 reboot of Sega's Heavyweight Champ: a game that was graphically similar to Punch Out, but instead of a joystick it had two large steel levers, and the monitor was on a swivel to simulate actual boxing, which was very innovative for its time, I thought. Same thing with me, though: I would wear myself out just punching away with those handles, and I'd never make it past the first round or two.
Punch Out!, same thing: mashed buttons, didn't get it, gave up. Once I sat down and watched someone play it as an adult, though; I picked it up and enjoyed it, no problem.
Now that I'm older, I'll give ring king another go.
