My first and only hero!! So real... so brave... so talented... OUR hometown HERO!!More than 30 years later, this still brings me tears. We miss you Gilles!!!
The official F1 video of 1982 had Clive James commentating. Over the crash he said "The Ferrari went up in the air, tore itself to pieces, and threw Villeneuve away". Over a picture of Gilles he continued "He was a poet of a driver". For me, Gilles was the greatest driver I have ever watched. During qualifying at Watkins Glen in 1979 Gilles' team mate and future World Champion Jody Scheckter came into the pits and said that he had gone as fast as was possible in the conditions. Gilles, at the time, was 11 seconds a lap faster! Gilles was a true great; that he never became World Champion is just one of those things.
People forget what a polymath Clive James is. TV personality, poet, translator, literary critic… A truly great intellect able to switch it on and off where necessary. A true great who himself will be sadly missed.
GILLESFOREVER!!!!!
We Canadians have never gotten over the lose of one of our most beloved sports hero's. Pure misery to watch this video. Brings tears to my eyes. RIP Gilles. We miss you.
I was 12 yo when i have see dying Gilles Villeneuve , and today i have 47 years , and i must always crying when i see this , it's so horrible , i can't forget this pilote . Rest in Peace , Gilles Villeneuve . You are always in my Heart .
I never saw the full footage before, it's devastating to watch - even after all this time. In one of today's cars, he'd be unstoppable R.I.P Gilles. R.I.P. Didier
You say that, but today's cars and race standards are only here because of tragic mishaps like this one, Lauda's, Earnhart's, etc etc.... This is first time I've ever watched this, and I am not ashamed to admit I cried. This is unbelievably sad.
Every die-hard motorsport fan with a bit of feelings cries seeing such scenes. You do not even have to admit that you are not ashamed to admit bro. We all cries...
+Padek Sewenejt I'm a motor sport fan, have been since July 1973, I have feeling, but I don't feel at all like crying watching this. I don't think you have a clue about what you are talking about, a lot of things in life more important that a sportsman being killed. R.I.P Gilles.
This is so heartbreaking. I always cry a river when I see two videos. Zolder 82, G.V. & Imola 94, A. Senna my hero, both legends. Never forget and always be remembered!
the most Ferrari driver that ever existed he embodied the ideology of the real Ferrari driver as the great Enzo Ferrari thought ... hello Gilles will be forever in the hearts of all of us Ferrari fans and thanks again to all the emotions that there you gave il pilota più ferrarista che sia mai esistito lui incarnava l'ideologia del vero pilota della Ferrari comne lo pensava il grande Enzo Ferrari...ciao Gilles sarai per sempre nei cuori di tutti noi tifosi della Ferrari e ancora grazie di tutte le emozioni che ci hai regalato
I was only four years old when this happened and can remember seeing it on TV. Loved F1 already at that age and couldn`t believe it. How could one of my biggest heroes die?
A driver should never live his life to the limit and risk death. Sure, F1 is quite aggressive back in the day however I believe the new safety improvements have benefited the next generation of F1. Seeing a person die doing the thing they love is what no-one should witness. Gilles Villneuve and Ayrton Senna are prime examples of people doing the things they love and sadly loosing their life behind the wheel. Enough said from me, but R.I.P. these legends.
In 82 that Ferrari seemed easily the best looking car in field. But at time the English constructors said that whilst Ferrari had best engine, they had dated approach to chassis construction - they said if Ferrari were able to match that engine to modern chassis it would be invincible. The awful disintegration of the tub indicates they were right, Ferrari's construction methods were behind the English teams, and it was McLaren that was working on the full carbon fibre tub at time, that was to be the life saver of future.
I happen to watch this exactly 36 years after the accident. Those pictures still seem to be ever so fresh: the Ferrari 126C2, one of the most beautiful F1-cars ever made, albeit fragile, as were all the cars of that era (except McLaren's MP-4 series), Gilles' characteristic helmet livery, the unfortunate Jochen Mass, who changed his line to give Gilles space, but too late. Sickening is the "ambulance" in which they performed heart massage on the way to the medical center: the back of a Ford Granada Tournier. Back then I was 12 years old and I wept my eyes out that evening, when the news of the accident were broadcast. And it still makes my stomach twist, when I see these pictures all those years later. R.I.P. Gilles
He was my hero growing up, I made all his cars all my school projects were on him. The greatest ever driver, father, mate to all that raced with him. RIP. Joseph gilles henry villenuuve. Damon last

Ruhe in Frieden , Gilles Villeneuve .
I remember watching this on TV. I remember thinking, "What is that flying across the track?", before realizing it was Gilles. Once that sunk in, I knew there was no chance.

safety is so much higher today, if i think about that aluminium chassis of that Ferrari, the seat anchorage....hard to say but today Gilles would walk away.
It is what it is. We should really stop hiding ourselves from anything that isn't pleasant to the eye. The emt's and track workers didn't get to hide. If it's too much for you don't watch it. Send it to his son and ask if it should be taken down. I bet he would say everyone who considers racing should watch it so they truly u understand the risk.
You completely misunderstood my post. I never said it was too much for me, that I found it unpleasant to the eye, or that I feel it should be taken down. I simply said the TITLE - that it was his "last flight" - was "a little risqué", defined as "slightly indecent or liable to shock". Hone up on your comprehension skills.

Villeneuve was a man who was way, way to competitive. He was one of these 'never give up at all cost guys', notably at Zandvoort 1979 when he bought his Ferrari back to the pits practically on two wheels because there was a championship at stake that year. At the start of this you saw Villeneuve's face black as thunder because team-mate Didier Pironi snatched victory from him on the last lap at Imola believing team orders were in place allowing Villeneuve to win. By the time they got to Zolder Villeneuve was still in a foul mood & once on the track a red mist descended as he was trying to beat Pironi at all costs, in the end to his own ultimate cost.
I remember one of his starts where he over took like five cars on the starting grid in like 3 sec without cheating this was the most awesome thing ever !
Gilles was one of the best. Motor racing is dangerous, and sadly this is unacceptable to the Eco and H&S fascists, who will eventually destroy it. As for the tech, it's gone too far, and we don't have cars anymore, just computers on wheels
Jochen Mass ...the same with the white and blue overall that you see attending GV a few seconds later. He was on a slow down lap heading into the pits while GV was on a quick lap. This was the result of a fraction of a second misunderstanding between the two drivers.

Saluti
If you look closely to video, you'll see his body getting ejected from the car and "flying" towards the fences. I think the last flight refers to that. He died on the impact with the ground, after his "last flight"

The title has too much sarcasm. You cross the line.
If he had lived it would have been interesting to see him 2 years later having to go up against Ayrton senna.
Hate to be that guy, but does the video title not sound a bit wrong for that crash ?
Thibaut Merlin that's the first thing I thought too, "the last drive" would be a better title imo
If you look closely to video, you'll see his body getting ejected from the car and "flying" towards the fences. I think the last flight refers to that. He died on the impact with the ground, after his "last flight"
