    Thanks! I have heard of lost wax casting but never knew exactly what it was or what it was for. Now I sort of get it. Helpful as always.

      Hi Alice, Lost wax casting is a huge topic that the OJA hasn't really covered yet. We have chosen not to put emphasis on it since most home studios do not have casting equipment. If you would like to learn more about lost wax casting, I'm sure you can find informative videos on other CZcams channels.

    Hi Professor John Ahr, first of all I want to say thanks for showing this absolutely and amazing demonstration. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I want to cast a shell I found at the beach. It's one of those sea shells that are somewhat flat and round type . I want to reproduce my sea shell and make it as identical as possible and make it with silver. Do you have some advice which is the easiest way to do it?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Ingrid, I've seen students use Delft Clay to reproduce shells like the one you described. But, the results always seem a little too thick to me. I think that making a cold mold of the shell is probably a better way to go for two reasons. First, you won't need to apply much pressure to the shell to push it into the cold molding materials. Second, the technique used in the video should produce a fairly thin model that can be cast using lost wax casting techniques. I hope this helps.

      @@OnlineJewelryAcademy , yes I think making a cold mold is a better way. Is there a way I could replicate a thin replica but in a more simple way. The lost was technic has to many steps and I would need to buy many materials

    Hi Prof. Ahr- I'm hoping for the best mold object detail I can get. Do you still recommend Quick-Sil for this or do you know of anything better out there nowadays....? Thanks! -

      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 7 lety

      There are many wonderful products on the market that will help you to get a highly detailed mold of your item. I don't know what you are attempting to make a mold of. So, I'm not quite sure what product to recommend. You might want to contact your jewelry supplier to seek their help. Or, visit a local caster and see what they might recommend. Good luck with your project.

    Can I use soy candle wax instead of jewellers injection wax? I'm looking to create a coin pendant from an impression

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 5 lety

      I'm not sure how cleanly the soy candle wax will burn out from the investment. And, I'm pretty sure that the soy wax is going to be extremely soft and hard to maintain. But, the only way to find out would be to run a test. If it doesn't work, you could buy a small amount of blue inlay wax for jewelry and use that in the mold. Here's a link for the blue inlay wax: amzn.to/2WsgeUU

      Hi Sonu, You should investigate foundry casting techniques used to cast bronze sculptures. The OJA is focused on providing information regarding jewelry making techniques.

    Great video John! What brand are the wax pellets?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 7 lety

      I honestly don't know. They were in a small bag I had on a shelf. But you don't have to use injection wax. Inlay waxes work just as well. The biggest difference is that you can't file the inlay wax very well.

    can you use them in sand casting

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 7 lety

      Hi Betsy, The silicon molds can only be used to mold wax and cold materials like paper pulp. And the waxes are generally too soft to use for anything other than lost wax casting. I hope this answers your question.

    how to remove wax from the mould?can you tell me?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  Před 6 lety

      The wax is removed by flexing the mold. Therefore, it is important not to make your mold too thick.
