WOW. SOLD OUT in 4 HOURS?! 🤯 I underestimated how popular these IFR notepads were gonna be! I'm getting more on the way TONIGHT! Thank you so much for taking such an interest in these! Be sure to follow my Instagram and/or Facebook @aviation101films to be notified when they're back in stock. I'll probably post about it there first!
I'm reading through all of your recommendations below and adding a lot of them to my list! 🙌🏼
How to use the altimeter in cruise phase would you use local or standard pressure?
Thanks for making a nice, organized clearance pad like this, Josh. I didn't start learning really good, professional departure briefings until I did my multi. I think these kind of things should be incorporated much earlier and things like these pads will help us get more organized and used to it. Best of luck on the sales!
I’m 100% on board for more of these Hangar Hangouts.
These look great! My Dad loved forms like this. Back in the 1970s, he even bought a special type ball for his Selectric typewriter that let him type lines and boxes and all the parts of a form. Then he'd run off a bunch of copies on the office Xerox machine. (Back then, the only copiers were Xerox machines, gigantic things that only a company could afford.) We used them on all of our flights in the family Cessna 182.
Looking forward to the 5-10 minute talks. A topic that I would like to hear about is purchasing a plane for the purpose of getting your private license.
Of course autofocus will like the background better, N80991 is in it! 😁👍
I know right 😂
VFR flight following radio calls. From finding the correct frequency to call for it, to how to make the request. When to say you're doing something different (RTE/ALT) vs when to ask. Differences between talking to approach vs center.
Great product Josh, this will really help for my instrument training, order placed! I really like the video, I think discussing more technical aspects of flight has been a great benefit to the channel. I still watch some of the old POV flights you used to do around the pattern, helps me with armchair flying at home and keeps me motivated when I can’t fly as often.
Josh, excellent concept. Love the solo chats that get back to grassroots. Ditto for your solo air ventures that concentrate on flight knowledge. I was licensed at 18, 44 years ago and haven’t flown in years. I am retiring in a while and would like to get back to becoming a proficient and safe pilot. A chat in your biweekly vids on the best way to do that may inspire more folks like me to do so.
A fantastic idea! We love the notepads and are looking forward to more informative videos! 😎
on IFR, create a backside to copy different frequencies and altitudes during a cross country flight
Thanks, Josh. Would LOVE to get some of your best "go/no-go" criteria for weather. I live in the midwest, and I want to steer WAY clear of thunderstorms in the summer and icing in the winter. But, I probably err too much on the side of caution, and choose not to go when I might have been able to go, while proceeding with caution. Anyway, would love your thoughts.
I feel like pilot and crew resource management would be a fantastic topic. Weather for single pilot of multi.
Types and styles of headsets. Along with the connector differences between airplanes and helicopters. Love the channel.
Very nice products for beginner and experienced pilots..well done Josh....keep the knowledge coming...
Hello Josh, this first CZcams video is very good. I am glad to see that you have decided to make every-other-week training videos. You are very knowledgeable, and folks like you and your friend Chris Palmer really help folks like me who want to learn this and be ready for flight lessons and eventual earning of Private Pilot Certificates. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
These look like they flow better than anything else out there. Nice!
I wish my CFI's were that organized. As an older student (soloed the day before my 60th birthday) I thrive on a structured environment when it comes to training. I have been in a technical field for many years, and one thing I have come to appreciate is the level of preparation that goes into *effective* training.
I'd like to see more instrument approach topics, and the nitty gritty behind that.
Hi Josh. You can discuss how to properly brief an approach plate in your new series. Thanks
I'm still working through my first batch - but I definitely will upgrade to the instrument pad.
Some would like to see ideas. Using flow backed up by checklists. ForeFlight for students. ForeFlight VFR tools.
I wouldn't mind seeing a video where you offer your perspective on buying a plane. I love the upgrades that you did to your plane and could strongly consider an old plane for the right price. However, how old is too old? and is a new plane, although expensive, just inherently better due to advances in technology and manufacturing?
Thank you for making these notepad they will be helpful when I fly I just ordered pair of The IFR and Flight lesson Notepad can’t-wait use them
Hi Josh, I'd like to know how you plan your long multi-day trips (Airport and FBO selection, finding a hangar to keep the plane safe from weather, arranging transportation and lodging, picking your alternates if plans don't work out, etc.). Basically, what are all the logistics you factor into your trips? Thanks!
I'm just glad your VFR pads are back in stock, have been wanting to try them out for awhile. I'm working towards my PPL at San Marcos, so I smile when I hear you say ABCJ x8 hs 13
Josh, thank you, as always for a another great one! I created my kneeboard forms, complete with TOD calculation reminders (rate & altitude) and approach/arrival clearance reminders, but yours are a bit cleaner. I'll definitely be checking them out. Keep at it, good sir! 🤙🏼
Very cool! I like the new formats. Very practical for real world use.
Josh, maybe do a video on FRAT?

DMMS. Dan Grider is doing an excellent job on learning how to fly using CLR that the airlines use in training. I’m a product of that aircrew training in the mid 80’s. Now retired but made my whole career a safe one.
Josh, I like this idea of shorts that focus on a particular topic!
WOW sold out in less than 5 hours!! Please let us know when it restocks!
Topic To Talk about- How to be a Great Safety Pilot / Crm if flying with another pilot
Autofocus always goes for the star!
Blue skies sir and all the best from the middle of NC (north of KHBI)
Really looking forward to the long talks. I mean, even how to clean an airplane. I appreciate you taking the time to do such things. Thank you!!!
Great video Josh. Merry Christmas
Just got mine. Really great.
3:43 Josh this is a great tool for anyone - New or experienced aviator-
Really great format. I am really looking forward to ur technical videos and really great sheets. Absolutely gorgeous.
Merry Christmas to you 😃🌲🛩
Josh, I love this type of content. Very helpful. I use a similar IFR notepad but your example gave me some great ideas. BTW: when is Chelsea coming back on?
I think IFR clearances should be texted to pilots on their phones in a standardized format, and then the pilot read-back would be all that is required. The only thing ATC needs to say is, "...read-back correct. contact ground." I have never understood why this can't happen. The IFR request would be, "(tail number) requesting IFR clearance to (airport)."
Merry Christmas Chelsea and Josh! I absolutely love your videos and everything that you both bring to aviators and non-aviators alike! I wish you and your families all the very best in 2023!! Please spend more time in Canada, it's an absolutely beautiful country ( as is the US).
Descent planning!
great video Josh, some topic suggestions, forced approaches, side slipping to loose height, wake turbulence avoidance, and do's and don'ts of entering and leaving the various class's of airspace... looking fwd, to new vids...
Turning that IFR clearance into a basic checklist, what a great idea! And I like the idea of these short info/skills vids, there's always something I can use.
I am a big fan of these types of short hand forms. Yours is very well laid out. I have only one suggestion if you ever do a revision. I'm not as familiar with your weather in the Great state of Texas. However in the PNW we often have mixed layers. Do you have a suggestion on how to note what we had recently? For example, this is a typical Winter day; Few 010 - Bkn 015 - Ovc 025? I am looking forward to the continuation of this kind of content.
WEIRD question but thats a great pen, just wondering where did you get it?
Merry Christmas young fella. Thank you for your video's.
Nice job Josh
I’m looking for the best way to determine, during a pre-flight briefing, the most up-to-date, specific terrain and hazards located off the end of the active runway I’m using. Google Earth overhead photography? Aviation topographical maps? The point being, an in-flight emergency presents itself on takeoff, and there’s runway underneath, put it down. Ok. If I’ve attained sufficient altitude for a safe return to the runway, ok. But…in between those parameters, land straight ahead…ok…but what precisely is really on the ground straight ahead, or a few degrees left or right, headed into the wind?
Like that IFR form…better than the one I made up. I’ll be ordering a few of those! Nice work!
You are an asset to our profession...Thanks Josh! 😎😁
my spidey senses are tingling
I'm a new Private pilot and have only flown archers. Maybe a topic about transitioning to other aircrafts but not necessarily multi or sea. Tips and tricks if there are some.
Here is a topic suggestion that is guaranteed to be a winner: Tips for joining the Mile High Club in a Cessna 172.
The IFR notepad is fantastic. Great job!
Josh,
I’m a low hour Instrument rated pilot considering purchasing an airplane and wanted to see if you had any advice to share? My priorities would be as follows:
1) Safety
2) Reliability
3) Efficiency
4) Low Maintenance
I would be flying/commuting to see customers throughout the Northeast and would be based in Massachusetts. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Looking forward to your cost to own analysis on the C172.
Brian
Jush, since you were involved with AQP from the beginning may be it would be a good subject to touch on.
I think a good one to cover would be Certification Maintenance Requirements
Website is down... I'd love to buy one of these pads
Me too
I already got mine! I bought the day after they came out. I was going to use the IFR one today but our flight got scrubbed due to sick flight crew. Bummer! I'll try next week.
I use Foreflight scratch pad to get my info correct. It eliminates the paper issue and maintains a record of what you recorded for your IFR flight. I’m hopeful that PDCL clearances will move to taxi clearances with ADSB equipped aircraft. It’s a slow evolution, but doing this IFR near paperless would be awesome. I’ve done paper for a long time, kinda of like the digital realm better.
Wish i could get a T hangar like that in alaska, if you can find one ya gotta have an extra $15,000 a year layin around. Love the ifr note pad im gonna order a couple now, ive got my ifr checkride coming up soon.
I saw some plane that were for sale and part of the description it was stated it was "automatic " ? I thought the prop was direct drive? I enjoy your you tube videos! Thanks for the information still working on the ground school .
Hey Josh, been a follower since you were Mr Aviation. I ordered all three note pads. Hope you have a great Christmas.
Thanks for the video Josh!
Can you make a video about commercial pilot check ride maneuvers? Power off 180s , lazy eights, 8s on pylons etc
Great new idea, thanks!
Awesome videos, Josh. A long-time viewer here and I would LOVE to see a video on IFR approach checks or any acronyms. (IE... X miles from IAP, check these items. 3 miles from the final, check these items, etc.) I asked my CFII about it and he told me to make my own. Thanks
I heard a y’all slip in there :D. Great work keep up the excellent content!
Any chance you can do a FULL walk around. I’m a new pilot and could use as much help for my 172 as well.
Dude! I've never flown and don't have access to a plane....... However. I've watched all your videos several time over and would love to fly someday! Thank you for all the camera angles in your videos, some youtubers just film themselves talking, and that's ok, but you do an amazing job with your editing.
Make a video on FDC NOTAMS
These look great! What would it take to get Foreflight to incorporate these into the scratchpad? They have the departure ATIS format, CRAFT format and PIREP scratchpads, these would compliment these items.
On future topics, I noticed in a previous video that you flew with your dad doing instrument approaches. I would like to see topics to maintain proficiency for the aging pilot population and any tips that you use for instructing older/rusty pilots. Excellent work, love your videos.
decent planning and how you set up the vnav profile on the G3x Touch would be a great item to cover. I typically fly G1000s but there is a G3x touch in one the planes where I rent and I feel it would translate to the G1000 pretty well too. Love your content and keep up the great work!!!
That IFR pad is great. I want to get to PPL eventually, but life isn't allowing for it at the moment, so I try to use flight sim for learning things like that and I've been hesitant to try and IFR on vatsim. I'll be ordering one of those for sure to start doing some practice!
Great video and I encouraged that you do these mini videos. It is the making of your videos is where my question lies. What kid of video, audio and editing equipment do you use?
One problem I have is a ifr checklist- including having my aviation setup
Avionics
can you sell these on amazon, it makes it easier to buy the goodies without creating new accounts
Greetings Sir,
Great article and video! I just have a couple of questions, I know that there are several IFR departure procedures including ODP, SID, Climb via, radar departure..etc
1. The ifr clearance/CRAFT mentioned including the craft at a non controlled airport, is the CRAFT part of the odp, Sid, or other ifr departure procedures? Or is it simply just a clearance or a “permission” from act to get into the skys from ATC.
2. Let’s just say I’m at a major busy controlled airport KLAX for example, and I’m using the SID or ODP for my departure, will I need to copy down the a whole bunch of stuff from ATC for the CRAFT as well for my clearance or “permission” to get into the skies from ATC? I assume flying the airlines have a much more easier way like just inputing down all the information in the flight computer system right? And only for general aviation like if I’m flying Cessna 172 part 91 where I have to write down all the bunch of stuff for the CRAFT info? Thank you! Meaning do I need to get an IFR clearance from either a controlled airport and a non-control airport as well?
3. I have heard from different sources including flight insight about the number of flight IFR departure procedures, I’m not sure if this is correct but I will just name the ones that I know below, Please correct me if there any mistakes or any overlaps, thank you.
IFR departure procedures
1. SID (3 kinds of SIDs including 1. Pilot-nav SIDs 2. Radar Vector SIDs 3. Hybrid SIDs)
2. OPD
3. CLIMB VIA…SID or ODP
4. Visual Climb over airport, (Not sure if it is the same as number three Climb via…)
5. Vectors Dep
6. Diverse Dep
7. Radar Dep
Thank you so much for your help!
how did you get into flying? What's the best way for someone who has no experience outside of sims to get out and start learning to fly?
Hi Josh & Chelsea. Any update on the IFR notepads???
Cleaning the BELLY of an airplane, cockpit organization when flying, What do you pack in your plane for a cross country trip, single pilot IFR TIPS, a few quick topic suggestions
How to use the altimeter in cruise phase would you use local or standard pressure?
That is perfect for taking down info
Hello Josh, wondering how I can get the IFR Flight Notes.
What is your Personal View on AQP?
OK, so you mentioned having ZULU time down at the bottom of your iwatch. I would like to do the same on my iwatch and ipad and iphone. Sadly, I cannot figure it out. Hep anyone?
I would like see a 5 minute video just on vocabulary and abbreviations... BTW, have you ever heard of Humor Bagel? You look in this video reminds me of his looks. He has a prank channel. Love his channel, love your channel. If you check it out, let me know if you see the resemblance. Thanks for all the knowledge and adventures you share.
How do you like your glasses? I have a slight astigmatism at distance and my ame said if wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a pair and even the eye doc agreed. I have flying eyes sunglasses already so it’s an easy switch but I have to spend the money again or buy a cheap pair that will still fit under my headset.
How to use ForeFlight!!!
Awesome
What does it take to get to own an aircraft who would I need to talk to and insurance?
Maybe talk about how you talk back the ground instructions at Chicago midway airport, they talk super fast, I’ve always wanted to land there.
To be honest, I’m a little afraid to go in there Just because I’m afraid I would foul up the instructions, very busy airport.
Which model of flying eyes are you wearing in this video? Do you have a code I can use when ordering?
Do you use Foreflight,? If you do, maybe an nice over view of the app and cost.... It appears something I would have loved to have during my C210 days.. :-)
I do! I can add that to the list.
@@Aviation101 Maybe a comparison to other apps (Garmin Pilot, etc.)?
I like it 👍
Skills you should have before you hop on a plane? The least tangental and more direct of an explanation, the better. Thanks and have a nice day.
good stuff.
