BJ was a rising young prospect, had a couple of good seasons in the majors, was on a winning team, hit for the cycle once, and had a brother that was also a good player. This brought him much attention and praise. But he rested on his laurels and got entitled and lazy. In his mind he was better than he really was. A real professional knows that excellence is formed on good habits. It's a decision you make everyday to do your best. Nobody cares about how good you were last week, they only care about what you can do now. That goes for any job.
There's a great aphorism in baseball: there are humble players, and soon-to-be-humble players. Starting in 2013, Melvin "BJ" Upton's career took a total nosedive. He could barely bat .200. But it looks like he's turned a corner this year, as he played well enough early on to get traded, and has 19 homers with the Padres and blue Jays in 2016 (which makes me think he should return to the "BJ" nickname)...

Slavery ended but the racism against blacks didn't end even to this day. So do not group all black people with that lazy B J Upton.
Thanks for the history lesson, not only did I know all of that, you completely missed my point. The whites and blacks of today have NOTHING to do with slavery, period. Yes racism against blacks still exist and unfortunately always will, but here's a brain buster. You are aware that there is racism against every other race in the world right? Whoa crazy?! My whole point is if you actually think that the present black population can use slavery as a valid reason to hold a grudge or be lazy, there is something seriously wrong with you and them. It's that kind of mindset that is preventing the progression of mankind. Don't get me wrong though, there's laziness in everyone because unfortunately that is a human flaw, not a black person trait.

even when u play for fun u'd run to the ball faster than that. now he's paid and he very well knows everyone is watching and still give it no effort? and give more energy arguing
Longoria is a great team leader
Tampa was lucky to have Longoria for the years they did. A real leader and face of a franchise.
Longoria do work! Let him know who's boss! I agree with the commentators, players need to keep teammates true to the game.
"I think that I'll just jog after the ball."
i don't get when guys are so quick to get violent. He asks him about what was up and boom upton wants to start swinging. Humanity at its best.
***** How did you get racism out if the situation ?
+Richard mc dermott not at all he didn't hustle for the ball longoria is trying to win games im a tampa bay fan myself regardless of color I would have jumped on anyone's back if they did that
Little did they know they’d be making it to the World Series because of that accountability 💯💪🏽
And lost...and totally different team
@@mikerusso703 im blame the sh*t weather to this day. Give me a rematch with good conditions
@@faceripper77 the ahit weather helped them idiot...or else they wouldnt even gotten another hit off Hamels...and what about game 4, where they got absolutely annihilated...they were outclassed by the Phillies...lucky to win one game...
@@mikerusso703 At least you aren't being a dick about it
@@beansmcdonough1782 yepp being truthful...some people cant understand the difference...like people that thought Washington lost thec08 series due the inclement weather when in fact it helped them...smdh
Wasn't he pulled from the game after that half inning as well?
What was the story on Upton here?
You can see in Longoria's face that he wasn't worried about anything BJ had to offer.
Sit down Melvin.
where are they now?
As a Rays fan, we were very glad to get rid of him
Tru
I never liked him in Atlanta. too much attitude, not enough hustle.
We didn't like him too much in Atl either. His contract was ridiculous.
+craig4fsu his contract was probably so he could play with his brother
Could Melvin Upoton or BJ Upton (whatever his name) been an every year All Star if he had a different attitude?
absolutely he has the talent
no closed quotation mark?
Crazy reading these comments from ten years ago!!! You tube is like a time machine
Hey! i know how to jog. Sign me up Rays!
Hey Tampa Bay, want BJ back? You can have him. He sucks in Atlanta.
The word play haha, Bj and sucks..
Put that on the LOW light reel ...
Bj uptown was my favourite player back then
Just more of the same from B.S. Upton.
BJ Upton is almost as horrible of a human as Puig
What the fuck did Puig do?
Have you ever watched him play? He thinks he's the shit
Khris Hodge Arrested for speeding 101 in a 75 MPH area
***** he is the shit. you're just a whining nobody on your computer
Jarrod Kopczynski he'll calm down, reminds me of the soccer player ballotelli in his antics, but anyone that plays as well as he has gets a free pass for all that off-field bs in my books
Was anyone really surprised that Upton did this? His entire career has been plays like this
He was jogging because he knew the fence was there and was going to get the ball eventually
I bet BJ Upton goes at it a lot with other men.
Yeah, wouldn't surprise me if he was into men lol
I thought it said Eva Longoria. So disappointing 😂
This could explain why one has been out of baseball for five years while the other is still playing
Someone should have told it's a piece of cornbread LOL!
Annnnnd that's why BJ doesn't play for the Rays anymore. He's a no talent bum. He should feel lucky to have been on a team with a talent like Evan Longoria.
Two of the three worst fanbases in all of sports represented in this game
of those 28,000 i bet 22,000 of them were rooting for the other team
Rick Steck Who things a professional sports team in Florida is a good idea? The Rays, Marlins, Jags, Bucs, Magic, Dolphins, hell even the Heat are bandwagon fans hahaha
Rick Steck The Marlins also have a good fanbase, even though it's small. When they start winning again, the fans will start attending more. Even the most loyal fans don't want to see a last place team on a Wednesday night.
You just said the Marlins have a good fan base. You sir are not all there
If you actually lived in the area and weren't a fucking armchair internet expert, you'd see what I mean.
as a rays fan this was definitely a certified BJ Upton moment.
If you can't run, McDonalds is hiring
BJ was a rising young prospect, had a couple of good seasons in the majors, was on a winning team, hit for the cycle once, and had a brother that was also a good player. This brought him much attention and praise. But he rested on his laurels and got entitled and lazy. In his mind he was better than he really was. A real professional knows that excellence is formed on good habits. It's a decision you make everyday to do your best. Nobody cares about how good you were last week, they only care about what you can do now. That goes for any job.
Longoria you the man!!!
he did not change his nickname to BJ for no reason - let;s just put it that way
There's a great aphorism in baseball: there are humble players, and soon-to-be-humble players.
They're typically lazy like that. And by "they", I don't mean "outfielders"...I mean "blacks."
I agree, but blacks are typically lazy. You can't argue with reality.
TheRanhughes I most certainly can argue with "reality", being a black man who gets off his ass and works every day.
kenneth king Did you live all the way back then? Otherwise, you weren't, nor have you ever been a slave. So shut the fuck up.
Robert Hanke What a sorry answer to all the racism that persists today. Slavery ended over 150 years ago but they were still hanging blacks from trees and keeping them away from good jobs and, voting, eating at restaurants, good housing, treatment at hospitals, etc. etc. etc. for 0ver 100 years.
When your being paid millions your job and co workers depend on you. He shouldn't have to be told.
Asked afterward about the scuffle in the dugout, manager Joe Maddon had no idea what they were arguing about.
Hahahahaha, I thought it said Eva Longoria. I was waiting to see her and was so confused. Hahaha.
Surprised he didn’t say he was called the N word
Why?
Upton overrated player!
Everyone on the team knows that Evan woulda slapped the laziness out of his mouth, that's why four team mates got between them, they knew too
I like how BJ doing the turn to the left turn to right and shaking it all around . lol
Longo must have said something really offensive to get that reaction out of Upton.
***** It must have been real offensive when Longoria said, "Hey, you could run faster." LOL
