Ultimate Drone Landscape Photography Tutorial

  • This is a really in-depth tutorial looking at how to shoot stunning landscape photographs using your drone. This tutorial is split into three sections:
    Preparing for your shoot: 0:00
    Location shooting: 3:07
    Editing: 10:31
    ** My new drone of choice amzn.to/2IffC0y **
    I used the DJI phantom 3 professional for this shoot but the principles are exactly the same regardless of what UAV (drone) you are using.
    Getting the most from your drone photography really is about putting in the legwork in the preparation stage and selecting the right location and the right time of day. Once you’re at the location spend time before getting your drone into the sky, scoping out what you want to shoot and dialling in the settings to your camera so you maximise your flight time. Aim to get 1 or 2 really good shots per flight. You’ll then want to spend a decent amount of time editing your drone photographs to get the best possible results.
    A huge thanks to Toby Russell who very kindly helped me film the location shooting section.

    Nice tutorial. This is exactly what I've been doing since getting my hands on the mavic pro. I'm used to shooting with a Canon 5D3 so the two obvious drawbacks with the Mavic were 1, poor dynamic range and 2, only 12 mega pixels. So then you simply use the HDR Pano technique in Lightroom (drone in Portrait mode) and you have yourself a great raw file to work with. I ended up with a 35MP shot with loads of detail in the darks and lights. This format is my go to for pretty much every image I take with the drone. Even if it doesn't need a pano I would still play it safe by switching to portrait mode and stitching at least 3 images together. You can always crop later but by stitching 2 or 3 portrait shots rather than using one landscape you are doubling your pixel count. Again I would almost always bracket 5 shots every time too. On the Mavic it will auto bracket 5 shots but each one is only +\- 0.7 ef so if it's very bright and that's not going to be enough I bracket it manually.

    I've always had an interest in photography and technology and the drone for me is just a cool way to take pictures. I've had my Phantom 3 Advanced for about a week and already sussed out the hard way about planning. 1. Open areas with no trees...steep learning curve for me! 2. Plan a flight path. Just 2 options already I've learned, just wish I'd seen your video tutorial first. Thanks for the videos, its giving inspiration. I have done a video as a trial run, fairly happy as its my first attempt. Click on my name to view.

Just to the east of where you were, there's an old ruin called "The Teahouse". I think that would make an interesting subject at sunrise, with the sea and sun coming up over Salcombe in the background.

    Can I ask if you think a drone with smart software like this can fill the gap of a jib and or slider? well jib/dolly anyway. Im considering getting one but still a little sceptical that the video quality (which is only 60Mbits/sec) is not way up there. Do you have any thoughts on that?

    • @JonathanJScottFilms
      @JonathanJScottFilms  Před 8 lety

      yeah absolutely, you should watch the video I put together on how to get cinematic shots with a drone, it's on my channel. A drone will easily perform all of those things but obviously with a DJI phantom you are limited to the in built camera, if you get an Inspire with X5 camera you will get better quality and you can even get the x5r which will shoot raw video with a data rate of 1.8Gbps! but it will cost you about £5K. It all depends what the application is and what your budget is.

    if you are shooting in raw and you can adjust your exposure in post then why do you need multiple shots in different exposures

    • @JonathanJScottFilms
      @JonathanJScottFilms  Před 7 lety +1

      Danny Darco because it's a high dynamic range scene where it's not possible to capture all the information of the shadows and highlights in a single capture, hence taking multiple exposures one that is underexposed capturing highlight detail, one balanced exposure for the midtones and one overexposed for the shadow detail.
