Perfect poached egg 4 ways | poaching eggs masterclass
Today i'm going to show you how to poach an egg 4 different ways. Some methods are easier than others, but each one will produce a nice runny yolk, and firm whites. Play around with each method to find which one suits you best.
Now if you're lucky enough to have access to really fresh eggs such as from your own chickens, or a local farm, you will get perfect poached egg every time. However, many of us get our eggs from the supermarkets, and are not always as tippy top as we would like. These 4 methods though, will still produce a perfect poached egg.
I always buy free range eggs as well, I don't believe there is any excuse not to these days. free range eggs are cheap enough, and it stands to reason that a happier hen, produces a better egg.
So follow my tips, and poaching eggs need not be a nightmare any longer. If you have any tips or tricks up your sleeve on how to get the perfect poached egg, leave a comment below folks!

2019 update: Ok so reading some comments over the past 2 years, some of you have mentioned that some of the poached eggs were over cooked. When filming this video it was all done in multiple takes, as I moved the camera around to get the right shots for filming, which ultimately meant that some of the eggs were sitting around longer than I wanted, meaning they continued to cook a bit more in the residual heat. Also some of you are concerned about using clingfilm to poach the eggs. This is an age old chef's trick, but obviously you would use food safe cling film. If you are still concerned......simply don't use this method.
some recipes mention vinegar in the water,,, or is that not important?
@@petuser1 it helps keep the egg whites together especially when you spin the water, when I just do straight up water I lose more egg whites and the egg doesn't look as smooth. Though some people don't agree
Just watched your youtube video. I've tried others ways on cooking poached eggs and watch vids on here and tried but yours is the easiest to understand. Loving the cling film method...simple and tidy....off to do it now as im super hungry now lol!. I'm subscribed to you now so I'll be watching for more tips and recipes. Thanks Adam 🤘😉🍽
Adam Garratt studies show heating Saran Wrap increases your chance of cancer.
don't use it then
I bought some egg poacher cups (from Amazon) and now for the first time in my life I can make perfect poached eggs any time I want! 👍
Thanks so much for sharing your technique. I love poached eggs.
I never knew any proper ways to poach an egg and watching this gave me a sort of confidence in it. Thank you, great video!
I think the first way seems the easiest and most suitable for me (a nine year old) to make. Thank you for letting me know!
Just no need to stir the water.
Thanks for posting! My mum taught me the first way, but it sure is nice to see other doable options, especially the multiple egg one.
Thank you 😉
1st & last method seems much healthier - without plastic leaching through heated plastic.
Stainless steal
Eggselent, Thank you!
Oh my, TY! I used a ladle & cannot believe oiling it prior wasn’t all that’s needed to succeed 🤦🏽♀️; I’m looking forward to try again using your genius method. 😉
step 3 and 4 are brilliant! Thank you for making brunch easy!
Christopher Roberts Thanks, no problem pal ☺
Really great!!! Like the way you present it also ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!
I love poached eggs, so thank you for sharing a variety of ways of cooking them. Your videos are really fun, entertaining and educational, keep it up! Thank you! 😋👌🏻
Thank you my friend. Appreciate it 🙂
You are a poached egg genius for sure !!! Thanks for this fabulous tutorial !!!
Love a poached egg and I’ve used all those methods myself though personal preference is the (1st) traditional free flowing “let’s see how it goes” method 😄 , but I’ve a friend who loves poached eggs and despite every effort hasn’t a clue so bought him silicone poachers! Time to send him your masterclass! Well done on a straight-forward, no over-egging it (pardon the pun) how-to 👏🙌🏻
Great video, clear instructions and lovely results. Could eat a poached egg now! Thanks for posting.
Wow i love the way you done it in cling that's they for me from now on Thanks man you are a genius
Been using the cling film method for many years, easy to do multiple eggs in one go. A bit fiddly at first, but now it’s quick and easy with no floaty bits in the pan.
And yes it’s a food safe product.
I’m concerned about being exposed to all of the microplastics.
Amazingly new techniques for me to learn! Thanks for the simple instruction!
Can't wait to try your methods of which I knew not. God Bless the Chickens🐓🐣🤭
Look out for vintage egg poaching pans, they're cheap and work beautifully!!
Wow, too easy! I could have been doing this all along! Thank you from across the pond; I love poached eggs!
3rd way was new for me and the best for my liking. Thanks!
I use the cling film method. It's a bit more fiddly but it produces a neater result, and you have less water on the egg which otherwise makes the toast soggy. Plus you can prepare multiple eggs and cook them all at the same time much more easily.
Thanks so much, I was so tired this morning I forgot to do the swirl thing and the egg whites just kind of broke up into a million pieces. Great tips I hope to see more of your food hacks because this one was amazing. :)
Try using a tablespoon of vinegar in the water; should help to keep it together.
Great video!
I believe your last method is actually a forgotten one called coddling. I picked up a few vintage egg coddlers in charity shops a few years ago, they are adorable.
Ahhh yes coddled eggs are fantastic! Might do a recipe on those now you mention it. Thanks Jemma. Your hair is awesome by the way! :)
Jemma Stovell Hi Jemma : I love my egg coddlers. Also purchased them in a second hand shop. Now not only are my kids, but my eggs are coddled also !!!
Fantastic video, should be fun to try a few of these!
Thanks!
He is a genius. Thank you for a great presentation.
Hello from America, new subscriber. This is a brilliant video! When I was a child my mom used to poach eggs for us in saran wrap, the oldest ways always seem to work the best. Thanks so much. :)
Adam, thanks so much! I’m so glad I found you! Poached eggs can be intimidating, thanks for showing how easy it can be!
No way 2 dislikes already....nice one Adam really like your style very informative, no beer or swearing like me, Anyway i've dropped a like on it for you
Chris The Butcher and Friends haha cheers pal. yeah dislikes are from reddit I think. They're a fickle bunch! 😂
Dont have a clue how to use reddit and maybe dont want to either
After all im now in my 40's and dont have much clue when it comes to all these social media lol i still cant work Twitter
Chris The Butcher and Friends reddit can be really good. a couple of sections I post in are really friendly because they are all cooking related. it's when you start posting in more generic ones when the trouble starts lol.
jesus where would i stand becuase yeah its cooking but also mainly adult content and i like to think its comedy aswell ie im fucked so i steer clear of it. Anyway where you from i cant work out the accent?
I stumbled upon your video channel I was searching for how to make Poached Eggs and I am literally amazed with your methods 👍🙏
Great video! Thanks for giving us over-the-pan views! ❤️🥚❤️🥚❤️

No more messy pans; good point!
Absolutely brilliant now am going green do my first porch eggs this morning
Best ideas for different methods I’ve seen yet! Can’t wait to try all of them. Thank you…new subscriber! ☺️
Appreciate the Advice I'm a cook in a busy kitchen, cling film game changer for me 😊
Hi Adam, I love the plastic wrap (cling film) way of poaching. I've used that at home. One of the ways, however, that I learned (no matter what method you use) is to crack your egg into a strainer to remove the very thin part of the white. Most eggs have a small amount of thin white and then a lot of thick white (raw, I mean). Once you strain off the watery, thin white, you don't have a lot of wispy areas floating in the water. Thanks so much for your great video!!!
Judy Fleming tanks you Judy! I'm going to give that method a bash! ☺
It's overall the best thing to do, especially if you are wanting to make multiple eggs. If you use really fresh eggs (in the US, there is a number on the side of every egg carton, eggs collected on January 1st will have a 1, and December 31 will have 365) separate the outer white from the inner white with a fine mesh strainer, you can poach 4 eggs at once in the pot.
Pop them in an ice water bath to stop them from cooking, and store in the fridge for 8 hours..when needed, just pop them in simmering water for about a minute to heat, done.
Please don’t use plastic wrapper / cling film method, the world doesn’t need more unnecessary plastic waste.
Why bother? You make more work for yourself and have another utensil to clean. You don't use the white parts that float away so don't worry about it.
I love it!!
Thank you
I will try today
NICE job! I love the saran wrap idea. I'll do that next time! Thumbs UP!!
You're a brilliant chef, Adam
Great variety of ideas!!
Let’s see what works!!

I'm going to try the last method...cool!!! Thanks
I love the last method. Looks so perfect.
Thank you. Stay safe 👍
This is the best one for poached eggs out, thanks!!!!!!!!!
After looking round for you tube for a really easy to follow nothing fancy way of poaching eggs, I watched Adam and he made it look achievable. Gonna practice all 4 methods next time I'm making brekkie 😊
Thank you and enjoy!
No need to tie the clingfilm, just twist so you can use less. Also melted butter instead of oil works well. My favourite poaching method (and easy to do several eggs at the same time). Alternative method: Use an old fashioned egg poaching pan!
Great ideas, must try them.
Loved all the methods . Poached eggs are always tricky for me to do . Maybe not after this .
👍👌👏best poached egg tips ever! Thanks for sharing😘
You're welcome! 🙂
Thank you so much for the helpful, beautiful video
Only video I need! Awesomeness thank you!
I love poached eggs and these 4 ways are great.
Thank you so much for this! I realize what I was doing wrong now! Thanks for sharing!
Hope you have cooked good eggs since
Brilliant tips, Adam. Definitely going to try the cling film method.
I like method 2 and 4. Those worked best for me. Thank you for the master class
You're most welcome Senza 😊
Amazing, they all looked perfect
I go with the last method but using little jars or cups or whatever is handy - for not producing so much plastic rubbish as with using the cling film.
Thanks a bunch, that was very helpful and not having so much mess and waste of egg compared to the vinegar in water method 👍💕
OutStanding presentation!
Thanks for that brilliant cooking lesson Adam. Im having a pouched egg for breakie.
I have a high protein diet because I had a gastric bypass. I have poached eggs every day. This is a great video. Thank you
Thanks Adam
Very helpful!

Awww thank you kay!🙂💗
Thanks for the alternatives.
Thank you for all 4 ways of poaching an egg! I prefer the first one. They are easy to make. I'll never go back to frying them.
You're welcome 🙂
Thank You, Will Use your Ideas !
Fun and very handy presentation!
Eggspert!😊 I fry mine with about 10mm of hot water in a small frying pan with a glass lid. The steam cooks the top. No need to votex. Bring to boil, turn down to simmer, put egg in, apply lid. Check occasionally, till done.
Indeed. That's a good egg. I appreciate your egg skills bradda
It’s made my mouth water as I watch in bed this morning in lockdown I always have two eggs so what’s the best way doing them together. Maybe the cling film method?
Thanks Peter. Either way would work. Personal preference really. Take care
Thank you so much I have learn something from you Plz keep on
Love it!!! Thanks so much, off to try ☺
I like that you are to the point and efficient
Excited
Watta nice techniques... I liked it, Chef!
The winner you are genius thank you
very nice posing method. different type of poaching method. I like it very much. thank you very much for doing something different.
Great video. Good instructions. Will try tomorrow morning.
Great. Very informative 👍👍👍
Great video, thanks! Surprising and educating :)
I've been using method #1 for a few years now and I recommend adding a tiny bit of vinegar to the water + not salting the water.
(That said, I just treated myself to a cheap but effective 'egg poacher' - which is basically a small pan that comes with a metal surface that holds tiny plastic bowls - similarly to your ladle technique - it works really nicely!)
Thanks for the tip man!
taste of vinegar with egg .....yuk .
Great video...I certainly learned something !!
The first method is the best, I think. Good video.
Thank you for sharing.😁💖
Great......i love the trick of cooking
there's no trick to cooking.
Poached eggs for breakfast are my all time favourite and I've been running several taste tests recently and it's good to be able to pick up some helpful tips, many thanks indeed.
Good ideas, thank you!!
A good video. If I want to poach an egg I do it when the farmer's not around. (;o(
Great tutorial. Thanks.
I made poached eggs in water for the first time this morning. (I have made them before but always in a tiny pan where you put water in the bottom, the egg in a 'scoop' on top and with a lid over it.) Today's effort came out very tasty but with a lot of nasty stringy 'foam' that I threw away. So I Googled how to do it properly for next time, and you came up! I love your simple, clear way of explaining how to do it and can't wait to try the cling film method tomorrow! Many thanks, it was very good information, I like the way you explain and show how to do things. Appreciated and subscribed!
Thank you my friend! Welcome to the channel as well 😀
Wow,🤗 I'm going to try your methods and I'm going to love that egg.
Brilliant as ever
