- The Alpine F1 Team announced a whole restructuring of its technical department after a torrid start to the 2024 season. But how did we get here? Well really this implosion has been inevitable for a few years now... let's break down why...

Cyril Abiteboul straight up resigned when Laurent Rossi was put in charge of the Renault/Alpine F1 Team.
Cyril knew what was coming.
Otmars arrival as team principal may have bought them a couple of years of relative success, but it all was binned after he got fired
This is what Christian Horner is trying to avoid. He can see Mitzlaff morphing into a Rossi. So he tried to buy the team
@@mvd4436 who is Mitzlaff?
@@AbcdEfgh-sq2tfOliver Mintzlaff, managing director of Red Bull GmbH (the energy drink/overall parent company, not just racing) - who is generally meddling and micromanaging (or is trying to, anyway) the racing aspect of Red Bull, unlike his late predecessor (and founder) Dietrich Mateschitz who might form the bigger picture, but generally just let Red Bull Racing go racing themselves
@@ArrowProds i see...
I'm still waiting for the "5 year plan to win a world championship" to come to fruition xD
Keep in mind that Alpine is technically a factory team as well, so finishing anything below P5 is already pretty shocking. The only thing going for them is they don't have any customer teams to be further humiliated by, though the jury's still out on whether that's a good thing or bad (if nobody is using your powertrains, what does that say about them)
What if... Alpine sold to Andretti? I mean, they're going to need to rebuild from the ground up anyway...
Haas would find some regulation to prevent it, or convince every team they have to prevent it.
After all, if Alpine sells to Andretti, who is going to buy Haas for way more than it’s actually worth?
Real possibility. Renault have to be asking themselves what the hell are they dying and why they're sinking so much money into it
They won't - it'll be more likely the sports group that partially owns andretti to buy out the team.
They just attracted a bunch of investors, then andretti would also have to buy them out i gues? Not sure how that works, but it could make selling the team more difficult🤔
They did, but that was only a 24% stake. They may have a say, but they don't have a controlling interest. Given the way things have gone for them, they may consider an Andretti buyout a good business. They may also be interested in selling their stake to Andretti as a way of cutting their losses given the sorry state of the team.@@duuudde12
I got the tea reference, never thought that would come up anywhere lol
😂😂
I had to look it up, I'd never heard of it before.
Elaborate please 🙏
@Gleepglurp it's a video that explains consent by using a cup of tea
You ask "you want a cup?"
If they say yes, you make them a cup, if no then you don't and stuff like that and you can't force them to have one
same 😂😂
This video is how I found out Otmar is American. 😅
Glad I’m not the only one.
I always thought he was Romanian
I thought he was German lmao
He has romanian heritage
I always thaught he was Hungarian
As a french fan, I'll say there's nothing more french than Alpine's recent history.
Big talk and grand ambitions, followed by a glimmer of hope that this might happen (I celebrated that Ocon win like it was July 2018) only for it to evaporate in a catastrophic but nonetheless flamboyant fashion. Compound that with our national penchant for bad faith and managerial ineptitude and you've got a vertical slice of french society.
And yet I wouldn't have it any other way. Because boy, does it feel good when we get to be insufferable cunts and rub it in everybody's face. Even though our adversity is more often than not self inflicted.
For a team named after some big high peaks, they seem to mistaken the orientation of those peaks and went for the valleys instead.
In German, ‘apltraum’ literally an alp-dream means nightmare.
As a somewhat new fan to F1, I find the whole Lotus/Renault/Alpine saga fascinating.
Meh...the Lotus years was just a bizarre marketing agreement between the then Group Lotus CEO & Team Enstone investors desperate for an instant bolt-on bit of racing heritage & identity...
RIP HAAS watch, welcome Alpine watch.
Haas Watch could still happen
Alpine will never be fixed as long as Renault keep sticking their oar in. Red Bull, Merc, McLaren and Ferrari have all set the model for success, an F1 team run by F1 people, with only rare input from the parent company on major issues. If Renault truly wants to fix alpine, they need to cut the chord
This also explains how Toyota managed to spend billions not winning a race in the 00s. Too much influence from head office.
If only life were that simple
It still fascinates me how self-destructive F1 Teams can be at times 😂
*cough* Ferrari *cough*
unless they don't do anything to fix relationships in the team, it can probably be redbull too
It's a whole lot of money and larger than life egos, I think most F1 teams are closer to absolute disaster than you'd think. World class people management keeps a team together
One of your finest videos to date! Had me howling with laughter. I had to pause it twice. 😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it
Given Renault's history of coming and going, I fully expect them to sell the team to Andretti and then come back in a few years when Haas decides he's had enough of F1.
They could do a deal where Andretti buys the team and Renault is a sponsor for 1 year before going full Cadillac
On the plus side Ocon and Gasly might finally become frenemies through mutual suffering
That tea video is GOATed in helping people understand consent
At least Alpine & Andrett bothi start with an "A", it'll be easier changing the signage

Or something like that
History shows that Ocon is basically a jerk who can't get along with anyone.
He also is, quite frankly, hugely overrated. "Oh, he is race winner". Not on his own merit. You can indeed thank Bottas and Alonso from it.
Speaking of which, if Audi really wants to replace Bottas with Ocon (like some rumors claim). Oh, boy they must be delusional!
@@1989SupraGuyFIN Motivated Bottas is better than Ocon but I do think current Ocon is better than chill Bottas.
@@phightinphil25I think we need the Porridge Boss back, to be honest.
Considering his close ties to Mercedes, Ocon probably would be a front running contender for Hamilton's seat for 2025.... if he didn't have such an extensive history of being the worst team player in existence. He's not slow, he's always competitive, but holy crap he's a nightmare for teams to work with. He's got the selfish mentality of an uber champion but not the ultra speed to back it up. Even uber champions know to dial it back a bit when not in a race winning car, imagine if he was in a championship battle....
@@bartonez123 Andrea Kimi Antonelli is the front running contender for that seat. Wolf himself said, that they made bad call with letting Verstappen go to Red Bull back in the day, so they won't let Antonelli slip away.
But of course, Ocon being Ocon, he will try to get that Mercedes seat.
Dont worry, now they will have the 1001 races plan!
Fun fact, having a mostly carbon fiber paint scheme does not make you faster!
Honestly I know it wasn’t limited to but Marcin Budkowski should’ve stayed as the way he managed the team was honestly on par with how James Vowels been doing a great job. Ocon and Alonso were working well together, the team had aspirations and direction but once Laurent Rossi started to add influence to the team more so than it started to go downhill
"Tried to turn his teammate into a surface to air missile... which probably would've gone unnoticed over there." Nearly spat my spaghetti out 😂
I personally thought Andretti would have to buy their way onto the grid via Haas or Sauber (if Audi backed out of course), but now it's looking like they'll be doing this by purchasing Alpine's spot. Longshot prediction, but at the same time I really don't see Alpine and Renault surviving this insanity. They've failed too many times and burned too many bridges in the past 15 years.
"Attempting to turn his teammate into a surface-to-air missile midway through the race... Which probably would have gone unnoticed over there" caught me well off guard. What a time that was, watching a race where there was a non-zero chance the track could've been blown up at any moment
The Alpine ship is sinking and everyone is getting out while they still can. Great video Will.
NO WAY MY BIRTHDAY IS ALSO ON THE 14TH OF MAY THIS IS SO COOL
My dad supports Alpine cause Renault is his favourite car brand. I feel really bad for him
Don’t feel bad for him, anyone who chooses Renault as their “favourite car brand” was always gonna be on the wrong side of history.
Thank you for the tea reference. I once had a safeguarding workshop where they started with this video. Still one that is quoted to this day by my friends and me.
You can see how committed Renault is to F1, a works team in sponsor pink!
la creatura
That instrumental, the video in generell, has a really nice feeling to it. Great work will
Absolutely love your sense of humour, great video as per
Thanks so much!
I disagree about the problems starting in 2020 and would argue that the problem started day 1 when Renault bought the team back from Genii Capital and installed Cyril Abiteboul as team boss for 2016, this being the man that had presided over the collapse of Caterham and then seen Renault's turbo engine go from being a distant second best in 2014 to a distant, and wildly unreliable, 3rd best in 2015. There's a reason he earned the nickname Squirrel Irritable for the rather ridiculous way he'd lash out over valid criticism of the Renault engine.
In the end though the real problem is Renault themselves, someone there thought hiring Cyril was a good idea, and that replacing him with Rossi was a good idea. I have never thought they would achieve much and on current evidence they never will.
I'm not sure if Genii would of needed to sell the team back to Renault without... you know them hiring someone named Kimi with bonkers bonus per how many points he brought to the team, that pretty much ended up nuking the teams finances back then (which they still haven't paid to Kimi, mind you, not that he would give a shit. He's Kimi, in the end)... Or at least wouldn't of needed to sell the team at that point in time anyways.
the missile joke secured the like😂
Cyril knew what would happen. Prost also saw kt coming and was fired for trying to give the tram a much needed critic view.
Alpine/Renault have no one but themselves to blame for this.
hahahahah your videos are quite entertainingly funny bro .... cracked me up with all your subtle nuances
cheers mate
I don’t think this was El plan 😂

WILL WE HAVE THE SAME BIRTHDAY!!
I knew something was wrong with Renault/Alpine when Ricciardo left for McLaren. It was not just Ricciardo leaving, it were all the circumstances (manufacturer/customer, teammate; I predicted it would threaten either Ricciardo‘s or Norris‘ career.).
Get Gunther in before Red Bull poach him to replace horner.
Nobody wants Gunther because while he's a great personality, he actually sucks as a team principal.
@@lozpopoI want him in at places specifically because he's not good at the job! Gunther being bad the job is far more entertaining that a professional person being good at it.
You understand that a leader having to shout all of the time and have his will not be listened to for years means he’s failing right
their 2021 livery was 🔥
So much for 5 year plan, good shit with the uploads , forgot you existed for a while
glad you remembered me! XD
Bet Cyril is laughing
The red Alpine on the thumbnail looked so cool ngl they should run red
They are the only team from their country
Renault, can pour money but, they will not have the economy of scale for certain technologies that is needed for F1
2:41 you mean round 2 of 2022
Laurent Rossi was the x-factor.
This is so beautifully put lol
Honestly genuinely forgot about that 2021 Hungary win lol
Alpine in 2023 went completely under the radar, at least for me
That surface to air missile joke.
But Andretti/Cadillac would not be a "competitive participant" . . .
Nailed it!
I actually did understand that tea reference, so you can up that number to 6.
Renault should just sell up to Andretti
As a fan of Alpine, i agree with most of it. What has been done in these recent years management-wise is beyond sad.
But: Ocon and Gasly are not enemies! They‘ve known each other since they were kids, they‘re both from the Normandy. They have been fighting as little kids. As Grown-Ups they are still not best friends. But also not enemies. This video exposes them as that, which is just not true.
Though Alonso and Ocon definitely weren‘t going along well.
All of it doesnt mean the downfall of Alpine and them selling to Andretti like some people claim.
Bruno Famin is actually someone who gives us Alpine fans alot of hope. Listening to him makes us believe he has a clear idea of how to turn around things. I believe these recent personnel changes were especially his decision. Not Renaults. Renault has less influence on Alpine than it used to have. These coming weeks will decide how good the car really is - according to Famin the development wasnt finished, although Matt Harman said something else (proves that something was going on behind closed doors).
Will we be the Mc Laren of 2024 ? I highly doubt that, since we have a weaker engine. But i have a good feeling about being back in the Top 10 later this year. So this season atleast wont be a total disaster imo.
This will be good
So Ocon just has beef with everyone 😅
I have now Googled "Tea" in my own time. Wouldn't you know it, Oscar Piastri's off-track shenanigans are both entertaining then AND educational now!
Its very sad to see Alpine/Renault like this, even more when you think of the 2 championschips they won in 2005 and 2006 and what good Team it is.
That was a long time ago tho
That was nearly 20 years ago, I'd be amazed if there was a single person from that era still working in the same team.
Andretti is probably talking with then 😂
6:08 I wasn’t aware that Ocon and Gasly’s relationship had gotten… any worse… in 2023.
12 months ago i never would have thought that alpine would be a lot worse than haas of all teams
Alpine remind me of Ford in the 90’s, trying to do F1 on the cheap. It didn’t work then and it won’t work now.
06:02 that's nationalism not patriotism, which are two different things
TEA video reference!
If you're wondering that video is still used nowadays and its still as hilarious as its always been.
At this point Renault should sell it all - lock stock and barrel, to Michael Andretti and Cadillac.
Otmar looks like he had one roll to many.
At their car reveal show everyone was more interested in their Hypercar rather than the F1, so...yeah.
Because their f1 car is a shitbox
When do the board have enough and pull the plug, I wonder?
I am happy for your success. Your content puts a smile on my face as soon as I see it. Thanks man. I got better money on Hulkenburg than Ricardo
I appreciate that! thank you!

I thought the tea video was just my school lol

0:54 rumors are going around that Logan shot the steering wheel like there’s no tomorrow
As of now haas is p6 in the construtors btw
absolute slander and I'm here for it XD
"Vanity is definitely my favorite sin." - John Milton
Been saying it for YEARS on r/f1 that renault do not put enough $$ into alpine and where about to pull out b4 alpine was pitched as a marketing tool. So yeah andretti needs to buy enstone as they have good ppl, or did, they just like Gene Haas refuse to invest correctly for a possible billion dollar valuation. Its profit if u put few 100mill in
I understand now why Oscar left Alpine
Their biggest mistake was to let go Cyril and Alain Prost. Since then the team lost their ambition.
arent alpine investing in endurance more?
Pretty sure having a team manager who seemed like he just wanted to be everyone’s friend instead of, you know, being a brutal F1 team manager, didn’t help Alpine over the last few years
As an Alpine fan, 😔
That team has 0 backup from Renault. I mean they're literally selling it.
Wow, I'm one of the five that understood the "Tea and Consent" reference...
@4:18 isn't Piastry a Kiwi?
😂😂😂 tea and consent is a hilarious video.
Getting rid of permane probably helped the team atmosphere given his love of telling drivers to kill themselves as a method of motivation.
I'm going to need context for this one?
@@ShuntedMate Permane has a reputation of being a very toxic guy, many saying that he contributed a lot to the feud between enstone and viry. Many people who once worked at Renault back then where rejoiced when he was dismissed.
The alpine situation reminds me a lot of jaguar in the early 2000s. A works team with a constant merry go round of personal in leadership roles creating a lack of stability in the team. Also with the lack of investment from parent company Renault to upgrade the facilities at enstone it’s no real surprise that alpine have fallen back both from car performance and high quality personnel. There’s only 2 real options for Renault.
1: invest more if you have any ambition of being at least a respectable works team.
2: sell up and get out if you have no am I for improvement.
I absolutely love your unashamed simping of Ricciardo. Go hard my dude
Late comment, but had to add the Ryan Reynolds 'investment/ownership' deal I'm assuming is similar to his other such endeavors i.e. Mint Mobile: he simply lends his name and leverages his celebrity social media/PR reach in service of the company in return for an equity (in the actual, not Wokeish, meaning) stake. It's brilliant on his part...his 20% Mint stake was reported to be worth around $600 million when the company was being floated for a buyout a couple years ago. Hollywood stars never put one penny of their own money into anything...they know (the smart ones anyway, and Reynolds is one of the smartest) in the social media era they have something far more valuable to trade: their celebrity itself.
I always saw that team as a Career killer since they had the ugly renault livery... I think 2009 or so.
But 2012 onward as Lotus-Renault was where they really enforced their nonsense.
2012 Kimi drove the wheels off the shitbox finishing 3rd behind Alonso and Vettel, while Grosjean crashed it trying to match Kimi's pace.
2013 Kimi and Grosjean actually did deliver respectable results for the car they had.
2014 they had a total shitbox and Pastor Maldonardo on top of it.
2015 they actually ran as Lotus-Mercedes with the Mercedes engine... in a shitbox.
2016 Renault bought back the team from Genii (to which they had sold it)... and once again, produced a shitbox piloted by Palmer and K-Mag.
2017 Hülkenberg drove full season and Palmer was dropped late in the season for Sainz... and once again, it was a shitbox. K-Mag left Renault for Haas, despite having a offer from Renault.
2018 Hülkenberg did his best in the shitbox and carlos had a fairly respectable rookie season in said shitbox.
2019 Carlos left for McLaren and they got Danny Ric who drove the wheels off the unreliable shitbox.
As you see, even before Danny, there was a huge tendency for drivers to switch teams ASAP, even when they were nominally weaker.
Oh I totally forgot... even before that, in 2011, Heidfeld was quite livid after the car burst into flames for the 2nd time this season in Hungary.
I also think it was the last time I saw a F1 car bursting into flames like that, unlike Ferrari's more recent gentle smoldering.
To be fair until 2018 they were on an upwards trajectory after buying the team back from genii. They've stagnated and gone backwards since then though
@@seanonraet8327 I know they peaked in 2018 as 4th in the WCC, but it was with Hulk as 7th and Carlos as 10th in the WDC.
But the 5th placed team that year was Haas, which might say everything needed for how competetive it was.
Williams at that point had Stroll and Sirotkin in Martini livery, which were roughly where Alpine is now.
It was also patriotism on Britain's part that meant fighting Germany, but yeah, let's go with a take as insightful as all guns are bad
I’m saying it now, we’re going to see an Alpine Watch segment, are we?
