I knew this was gonna be for me from the very first paragraph of The Blade Itself. Wes was one of my favorite characters and the conclusion of his arc had the biggest impact on me. The entire series was just masterfully written.

I've just finished the first law series. Not sure where to go next. I mean I will read a sci fi book for my next book. But I want to continue in the world of the first law after that...
I know there is a book about Cosca... and Dogman. I think a book about Cosca would be great... but the Dogman? Was the most boring guy from the group. I'd rather read the adventures of Shivers lol.
Anyway what I'd actually really would love to read in the first law world is Logen.. does he ever find Ferro? Does Ferro ever get her revenge? How it ended between them was so real and also man .. sucked,, not as in that was a bad part of the book or badly written. But more sucks as in 'aww man... I wish they had better closure.. but that's life'
    What's Bayaz up to?
How is married life treating our lil torturer Glokta? Better than Jezal I imagine.
Does Julwei ever escape the house of the maker? Does Tolomei? When Ferro was leaving after she discoverd her power. I was convinced for a second she was going to the house of the maker to see if Julwei was still alive. Maybe fight Tolomei or make a deal with her. But no.. she just left. The one thing that bothered me. She thought about Logen as much as he thought about her. But then when he returned she barely even spoke to him or cared. While he actually seemed to return largely for her. At first I was like.. ho no.. poor Ferro.. she's lost her mind due to the voices. She acted all crazy, putting her ears to the ground etc etc. But then when Bayaz visits her she is very coherent and normal. And then she is attacked and very clearly completely has all her senses still after which she decides to leave.
But she doesn't even spare Logen a single thought in all of this. Which was so strange. Even if the flame died out so to say. Seeing an old lover brings out some stuff. Even if it wasn't passion or whatever.... at least questions. Why did Logen return? Did he return for me? I wanted to see him so badly, do I still want to see him? Was it a disappointment? Am I over this person? .... none of that. Not even a single thought.

So it's my first time reading the trilogy I'm about 80% through with the last argument of Kings it's been a very fun in Twisted ride Hugh Abercrombie is definitely the king of grimdark reading and listening to this sometimes seems like a big Fu to the fantasy world the way it's wrote basically saying like there doesn't have to be heroes I can make you love a character that's sick and twisted excellent writing now I have to read the stand-alones great video by the way

I discovered your channel about a week ago, looking for reviews on the First Law after starting the series. I'm halfway through Red Country and have enjoyed your Abercrombie content! Looking forward to your reviews on A Little Hatred and The Trouble With Peace once I've finished them. I've loved the series so far. I would say Best Served Cold is my favourite of the books I've read so far. I think it was the perfect spin-off/standalone imo. Before They Were Hanged was my favourite in The First Law Trilogy. I did love Last Argument of Kings and I really enjoyed the Blade Itself but book two I just felt like everything clicked.

I read The Blade itself years ago and thuoght that it was just okay and I didn't plan to continue. Then a few years later my friend gifted me the three standalones and right after I had read Best Served Cold I realised that I had to go back and give the trilogy another chance and I'm SO glad that I did. That time around I got real invested and I love it.

Just finished the series. The Itself was a decent introduction. Before they are Hanged was pure fire. I could not get over how great that book was... however, this book was kind of a disappointment. Maybe I was expecting a better outcome for the characters, but for the most part it feels a bit open ended. I didn't hate it, in fact I enjoyed it. But it is pretty bitter. I'd have to give it time and read it again later.

i love em, but i really dont know what youre talking about, lol.
no, but srsly, its interesting to me that you hold up the character growth so much, bc to my memory the strongest message from the trilogy is that "people dont change/its hard to be a new person when youre in old places (or whatever the quote is)". like logen tries to move on from his miserable violent life but gets drawn back into being the bloody-nine (he literally ends the book in the same situation he starts tbi in!). ferro changes very literally, physically, right at the end, i guess. but she cant let go of her vengeance and live life for herself, so she accepts bayazs bargain and ultimately returns home to exact revenge. theres this whole bit about jezal learning to respect ninefingers, and having trouble to reintegrate into high society like before; he even seriously thinks about marrying ardee. but he hesitates bc he cant quite let go of status and "what would people think" and then he gets sort of dragged back to a mindset where hes super special and important (king!) bc everyone treats him like he is, and ends up miserable for it. glokta does learn and maybe grow too? i dont really recall, he sure gains a deeper understanding of who the real players are over the series. he keeps his chivalrous ways to the end though (ie saving fair maidens in distress. he does this every opportunity i think, even after it bites him in the ass that one time with the eater in dagoska).
so while yeah, the characters do change throughout the series my takeaway would be something like "personal growth is hard won and easily lost"
...also i get distinct deja vu vibes here, have i left basically this exact comment on another one of your first law vids before? if so i apologize, i just love the books, and love thinking about them

    LIGHT SPOILERS:
I don’t entirely know what your getting at with the mild pooping on TBI and BTAH. I just never had any problems with either, because I don’t get the critism that there is very little plot. TBI has all kinds of threads to follow and one my first read I was like, “OH Magister Kault knew some shit about Valint and Balk, hmmmm.” There is always a slight setup period, but as setup goes TBI is ni-perfect. I think BTAH is a perfect sequel furthering the plot, world, and causing more FANTASTIC character interactions. 10/10 there are no actual faults. And you know where it’s going to a degree, like you know Glokta will be doing electoral stuff, and the Fellowship of the Seed will be headin’ back. And that Dogman and West are just frothing are gonna continue to fight the good fight. So LAOK wraps things up perfectly, yes, but all your videos have just sorta made the others sound lesser, and certainly you may feel that was, but I really couldn’t see how most people think it’s so directionless, because I and everyone I know whose read it, didn’t have that issue at all.
    Have a nice day! 👍🏻
