You are the most enthusiastic, most irresistibly charming, and most cheerful music teacher on CZcams. And the way you break things down to make them so much simpler is astounding. Most teachers I've come into contact with give you tiny bits of information at a time and they seem to be trying to make it more confusing... and they never come back and put the little bits of information they've given you together so it's up to you to connect the dots. Thank you nice lady

the most valuable advice I can give as someone who struggled to sight read for ages is to play! the more you read the easier it gets and the quicker you spot the patterns and ideas discussed in this video. you'll build up a bank of mental patterns that appear in each style and you'll learn to not only recognise them but to play them without thought. these tips are really useful but the best way to get the most out of them is to keep reading. good luck!

Another little trick that might be helpful to some is recognizing the fact that even numbered intervals are always line-space or space-line. Odd numbered intervals are always line-line or space-space. Remembering this might help some people quickly differentiate, for example, a sixth versus a seventh. Keep up the great videos.

I have games on my phone, I use the acronyms, I practice, but it's been really challenging to get all those note names to stick to my brain and coordinate with my fingers, lol. Every time I've just gone up or down a note because I recognized the interval I'd chide myself and say "that's cheating read the music!" I just started reading notes today. I am truly a newbie, but I like my method better than the mnemonics that everyone else uses. I have two sets like every one else for space and then lines.
    LINES:
    [F]inal line
[D]awning line (It is rising to sunrise)
    Middle [B]
[G]oing up one line above the first line
    [E]ntering the treble clef
    SPACES:
    [E]nding space
    [[C]losest to top space
[A]dvancing to top (It is going up one from the bottom space)
    [F]irst space on treble clef
I guess my whole point is that it is better to know that the notes by looking at that immediately rather than going through a whole list. However, I totally agree that knowing relative positions is very valuable. So, I totally agree with Lisa.

Great video! It’s definitely “a skill” that you need to develop and reach automaticity. It’s not enough to simply “know” these things. I knew how to read music for two years, I knew about intervals, but I never tried to sightread. I always studied and analyzed the piece before attempting to play it. This year I entered a music school and I had to learn to sightread for our sightreading exams. It took me 5 months of frequent sightreading sessions to put these concepts into practice. But I’m so happy with the outcome. I can sight read simple pieces now! Like Grade 1 or something! But it’s a breakthrough for me, because I couldn’t do that before! I could see the notes, understand the intervals, but playing even a simple piece straight away was next to impossible!

Let me share how I learned (and am still learning) how to read notes on the paper and how to locate them on the piano. There are four landmarks on each staff but two of them repeat so there are only three to remember.
Each staff starts and ends with the same two notes: (Ef & Ga if you prefer sounds or words to remember)
TrebleCleft: two end notes are E & F, meaning the bottom line is E and the bottom space is F, and the top space is E and the top line is F. The middle line of the staff is B. And the hi C is the second space from the top. This leads A, D, and G to be derived (and eventually remembered) from these.
BaseCleft end notes (top and bottom) are G & A. (bottom line and top space are G and the bottom space and top line are A). The middle line is D. And low C is second space from the bottom. This leaves B, E, and F to be derived from these.
It seems like there is a lot to remember but the similarities or symmetry makes it easier to memorize. EF & GA for top and bottom of the Treble and Base Clefts respectively; B & D for the middle lines of the two staffs. (For me, B & D are similar letters in shape, especially when you look at their lower case b & d shapes) And C being either second space from the top (Treble) or second space from the bottom (Base), this is easy as the treble cleft is the staff on the top so c is second from the top, and the base cleft is the lower staff so the C is second from the bottom. Other notes are derived from this.
It may also help to remember the band "the Bee Gees", to associate the notes B and G with the second line from the bottom of respective staffs: B as line near the base of the Base cleft (second line from the bottom) and G as near the ground of the Treble cleft (also second line from the bottom)
I didn't mention middle C as this is so familiar, it takes no effort to identify or remember.
Regarding the piano, E & F are the two keys between the double group of black and the triple group of black keys. And G & A are the two keys inside the triple group of black keys. C is the familiar key before each double group of black keys. This leaves just two notes/keys to remember or deduce: the B & D which are on either side of the C.

What I always do for the bass clef notes is see them like in treble clef and move them down a third. This is obiously only for the note names and not the height, and I don‘t know if it‘s the best way.

I love this video. I’m so glad you explained about the landmark notes because I always hated those acronyms. They always confused me! Thank you!

Haven't learned sheet music since I was n middle school. Needed a refresher and this helped so much. Transferring my knowledge from the other instruments I have learned. "By your powers combined, I can finally remember how to play." Lol

This is so helpful! This is one of the areas where I struggle. Reading music feels like reading Arabic (and I don't know how to read Arabic). I am not learning the piano but I am trying to learn the harp and this is easy to translate for that. I can't wait to get back to it! This video will make is so much less painful for me. Thank you! :)

This is great! I've naturally started using landmark notes but felt like I wasn't learning properly so I kept running the acronyms through my head trying to get the notes to stick. I'm so glad to see you say that I'm not going crazy but normalizing reading notes. Thank you for that! I feel more confident in my skills now!!!

Wow, learning to read sheet music for 6 months now with frustrations and this makes things so much easier when learning to play a piece late at night when I'm tired lol.

Do you have a video on the proper fingering when sight reading from the bottom bass clef to the top treble clef? Still confused on when to cross fingers or reposition hand 🤔💯

I can play violin so I’ve learned to read one note at a time . Because of you i am now going to teach myself piano . The bass clef will be a problem but this will help a lot . Maybe I will sound better than on Violin . I’m 74 and started learning music at 64 yrs . I automatically figured out to map out landmark notes . My favorite first not was B . “ B in the middle “
