The guy is underrated because he doesn't do any fancy saves and aerobatic dives like others do. His playing style is bit unorthodox so people don't rate him high.

Ajax plays an even higher line than Chelsea, IMO Nouman was too harsh on Onana there. The main reason why there were many questionable decisions to show, is simply that he has to make those decisions many many times.
It's still not his strong suit, but if you ask me his main weakness is that he misplaces passes sometimes, not that he's bad at coming off the line.

A lot of people still aren't convinced that Onana is a good enough Goalie for CFC. You don't simply rank 1st in psXg in the UCL for 2 seasons by luck, especially on a team that doesn't have the best defense. Initially I was concerned about his height and ability to deal with aerial threats, but after watching more footage of him, for 30 million euros I'd say it's a steal. I like the fact that he is very decisive when dealing with crosses, with a decent line of defense infront of him should be no probs I think

It's dependent on Kepa. We will buy a keeper regardless, but it will be a 'marquee' keeper if Kepa leaves, I'm thinking Oblak/Ter Stegen maybe, if those rumours are true. Though of course we don't know the financials. Onana will probably be cheap enough if Kepa stays, but he also could be gotten on a free next season potentially too.

It seems that Onana still has some weaknesses that will get exposed especially with our defence the way it is, and maybe not as inspiring as we might like, but as I understand it he's been getting better and improving as a GK these past couple years, and should continue to improve at his age - didn't Loris have similar mistakes when he first arrived at Tottenham ? From what I've seen, Rajkovic looks the better option. I understand that people want another ball playing keeper, but the reality is that in our new system under Lampard, our keeper is very rarely under pressure whilst on the ball. (Apart from the times, like against Sheffield, where we were playing really poorly and reverted back to passing for passing's sake)
We just need the best option for a keeper that is good at what is important, which for us is commanding his box, shot stopping and 1v1s. If he's got one leg and can't kick the ball, but can do all those other things, we should be going for that keeper.
One of the key things we need from a keeper is a calming, commanding presence. When we had Cech or Courtois, the commentators would constantly talk about how much better a defence plays when it knows the keeper behind them will stop shots he should be and come for crosses that he should come for as it means they can close down angles and rely on the keeper to save shots from those angles, rather than needing to actually make tackles.
We don't need fancy passes, especially with Pulisic and Werner. If the keeper is under pressure, boot it up the field and have them chase it. That's been one of our big improvements with Willy, he's known when to pass it short and when to be no nonsense and clear it to Giroud.

Are all of our defenders lack of speed and stamina?
Or is it just bad communication and coordination due to lacking a commanding defender?
With lampard style, we need more compact defense system with sweeper keeper who brave and strong but I don't see lampard tried to do so.
Or maybe lampard waited the new signings and would try new system completely?

I would love for Chelsea to have him after securing Havertz. Chelsea didn't play with high-defensive line under Lampard this season. Therefore, Onana might be a feasible option. If you didn't notice, Kepa was decent as a sweeper keeper under Sarri. It's a shame how it turns out for him. With him between the sticks, we can't feel the presence of a goallie.

Him coming out to prevent the crosses reaching the recipient is already a massive upgrade on Kepa, let alone the rest of his abilities. And I don't care if he's not Ronaldinho on the ball, he's there to stop shots from reaching the back of the net, not to dance with the ball at his feet.

  • @starlord3212

The sweeping is something that a keeper can improve upon. But the shot stopping and reflexes cannot be taught. Kepa was never a great shot stopper. Was really a bizarre decision by chelsea to buy him for that amount.
