OK. You could ,ve made this vid without the title about her being more popular in Japan than in the USA. I knew of her before I even came to America. Then I came here and saw her perform, saw her on Ed Sullivan dick cavett. And a bunch of other mainstream TV programs. She was loved and appreciated by black people for sure. And whites sure seemed to respect her. My mom bought that album HOW GLAD I AM. I still have it. Not cool with the click bait.

I met her years ago back in Detroit. She was very tall and just gorgeous! I actually forgot how great she truly was, a friend turned me back on to her music and so I started performing her music in my shows. She was one of the MOST underrated female artists next to Phyllis Hyman. I remember asking her a question and she kneeled down next to my desk in an all white paint suit and I yelled NOOOO! the floor is dirty and she said “girl I do not care” lol!! I do recall when we talked at how angry she was at the music industry. she told me to never ever stop, no matter what people say keep pushing..this business is not fair…I never ever forgot that conversation and I’ve not given up, I’m still pushing…and I am grateful that I got a chance to meet her AND Phyllis Hyman…thank you for posting this video!

@@HoneyHoneyBaby I have a lot of really cool stories. I worked as an Asst Office Mgr at a concert venue back in Detroit, so many of the performers had to come to me for assistance. Phyllis was my best experience. She was looking for towels and I heard her walking around…long story short I asked what she needed and while doing so I asked her if she could autograph a pics for me and my friend..She said “I can do better than that come to my dressing room after the show and bring your friend”…I was like OMG! Anywho…after the show we go to her dressing room and she invites us in for champagne lol! It was about 20 women in her dressing room all
Laughing and having a good time. Keep in mind Phyllis was very tall..and I’m 5’3 and my friend was 5’2. She was like a goddess to us. we talked briefly about her music, and thanked her..she signed our pics, gave us both hugs said I’ll see y’all next year….and a year later almost to the day, she passed away….such a loss. I actually perform her and Nancy’s music in my show…I have other stories as well. My friends have asked me to write a memoir of my life experiences. They have been very interesting.. :))

This video was so informative and full of relevant information for all of us who just were not well educated about famous people of color. I needed to know this on so many levels not just for entertainment but just for black pride and to be proud of all our accomplishments as black women and men. These were our mothers, aunts, cousins, sisters, nieces and grandmothers who did more than just survive beyond the racism. They said no to negative stereotyping and thrived in beauty and purpose. Good for her and thank you for telling her story. The world is our oyster, she was proof of that because all the rest of the world saw was a beautiful woman. Beauty knows no limits which is why these stories are that much more pivotal to young Black girls especially who only see one side of Hollywood and beauty standards.😊

All I had to see was her picture in the thumbnail!
FIRST OF ALL: "Fancy Miss Nancy" happens to be my actual favorite female vocalist of our times (no one lives for ALL Time). She did not particularly care for being billed or Labelled a "Jazz Singer", which, if your know her work down through 4 decades, she is MUCH more versatile than only Jazz; she rather preferred "Song Stylist", and it makes every bit of sense because of, not only her versatility and longevity and relevance, but because that is a term specific to the era in which she made a name for herself, ALONGSIDE--not just Ella, Lena or Dinah, but also your Sinatras, Bennets, Berls, Kings, Kerns, and the one and only Sammy Davis Jr.! She played some of the same venues (LOVE the recordings where you can here the low, light blanket of conversations and glasses and plates in the audience during her monologues)!
What I think is important people understand about Miss Nancy is her kind of discography is what teaches one how to transcend merely being a music CONSUMER, to being a music APPRECIATOR and even a CONNOISEUR and expert. We should understand that young Whitney grew up watching and admiring her and in much the same way JHUD would tribute her or Fantasia Tribute Miss Patti, Whitney did that for Nancy Wilson! It is in part because of Miss Nancy's example that Whitney would later say, "You gotta know who you are before you step into this business."
She was a Class Act in practical life and a World Class Entertainer on stages from College Campuses to The Sands in Vegas to Broadway and in Television Shows for over 40 years. And yes her album output was that other level see because Cardi B dropping 2 mixtapes in 6 months or Future at one time not giving people enough time to even live with what he just put out is both impressive and polarizing, by todays' standards. Nancy wanted to sign with Capitol Records because it had a reputation of being "the Singer's label". We needed and need many more like her.
Much like Joni Mitchell, while some so-called music journalists tried to relegate her to being "That artist from the 60's", Nancy was VERY relevant at least into the 90's (HELLO: Nancy had "Turned To Blue", even as Joni had "Turbulent Indigo"). One of her favorite and frequent collaborators was Ramsey Lewis, and it is because of their work together that I grew to appreciate the likes of Shirley Horn, THE OTHER Nancy Wilson (½ of the WONDERFUL rock duo Heart), and Marian McPartland, with whom even Alicia Keys had to come sit and jam. That Nancy Wilson shouted her out on Twitter at Miss Nancy's passing too!
I could go on, girl but just know this is one of them ones!!

What your describing is a live approach that's used in a jazz setting. The whole thing of dropping albums in a short time is something that used to happen all the time from the 1950s onward with the advent of the LP record. The aspect of playing live and laying it down as a group in a recording studio was a continuation of what was happening in the jazz jam sessions for decades since the 1920s. When Nancy (or Tatum, or Peterson, or Ella, or Louis, or anyone in the tradition) goes into the studio to record, the readiness that the players and singers exhibit comes from years and years of studying and perfecting the craft. There's an anecdote about a jazz jam session where they started a tune and kept playing it all night long until 6 am. To hang in there for hours, especially the rhythm section playing chorus after chorus, you have to have your stamina chops together.
Technology is a good thing (otherwise we'd still be using candle light, cooking on open fires, and using out-houses, LOL!), but in the case of the examples you sight about the music industry, yes, at times it's over-used. As a guy who's made his living playing piano for over 50 years, it boils down to this---can you play your instrument (or use your voice) and do three things--play in time, play in tune, and play in style. If you can do that and do it consistently and well, then you're a professional. Surviving the ups and downs of the music business is another whole discussion.
As a final comment, she did a great job on the Echos Of An Era album with Chick Corea, and the rest of the crew in the Griffith Park series--and that was happening in the 1980s. And...I got to see her live at Scullers in Boston back in the 1990s--and she was great.
    Just my two cents.

    Respectfully,
    PMH

❤❤❤ this post! By the time I remembered her in the 80's, she was this "silver fox" with the "silver voice!" Had no idea how dynamic she was in her youth. She was stunning!

My father was a fan of this gracious woman and I thought she had a beautiful voice.💐 I remember her guest starring on some of the popular TV shows of the 60s and 70s.🌹 Btw, I saw a picture of her with actor Lloyd Haynes of "Room 222". I had such a crush on him! ❤

This beautiful courageous Queen was the epitome of class, strength, elegance, and grace. My mother was a huge fan which in turn opened the door for me to see who she was and ironically she reminds me of my mom. Nancy Wilson has always been a true rare artist and such a beautiful wonderful lady. Listening to her music and hearing her talk is captivating. A true world treasure. Thank you for doing such a great job on her story. 💐 🌺 💐🌺💐🌺💐🌺💐🌺💐

I love love love this. Nancy Wilson is my absolute favorite vocalist she is the staple. I also whole heartedly agree with... I'm a singer and I'm heavily influenced by Miss Wilson... As a singer it's mind-numbing to see people who very little talent rise in the industry today due to technological advances... I've never desired a career at that calabar and favored stage work and Theater instead but to her point... As a singer I can listen to a record and hear regardless with technology assistance if a person is really a singer or not. Thank you for this fantastic tribute to This goddess... Absolutely love love love your channel.

I loved her hit song "How Glad I Am." I remember it was played on American Bandstand in the segment will it be a hit or miss. The kids voted it down - said it wouldn't be a hit. I knew it would be huge hit and it was. I saw Nancy at a concert in the early 90s and she had a gorgeous figure and wore her silver hair in a ponytail. She was stunningly beautiful and sounded amazing.

Thanks so much for profiling this great iconic singer, the beautiful Nancy Wilson. I appreciated how you highlighted her incredible legacy and body of work and her dedication to recording authentic music. You also touched on the challenges black singers faced in the record industry, and how Nancy Wilson persevered against those challenges. I would also note that Nancy Wilson was an incredibly versatile singer which helped her navigate from 60s pop, jazz and blues into 70s soul and adult contemporary music and back to jazz with Grammy Awards for RSVP and Turned to Blue. Finally I have to share what a kind and generous person she was toward her fans. In a world where it is often better not to meet your heroes, Nancy was an exception. Off stage this fan from Detroit felt like he met the girl from Ohio. ❤ Nancy and love that Karine profiled my favorite singer.

Hi Karine! I had to subscribe to your channel after binge watching your videos lately. I love how breakdown the lives/careers of celebrities all the while keeping their dignity in tact. There are some people who exploit entertainers on their platforms, but you celebrate them and I appreciate that. Nancy Wilson was incredible and one of a kind. Her voice transcends time. The queen of jazz (in my opinion) deserves her flowers. 💐🕊

My older sister introduced me to Nancy Wilson when I was about 12 years old. For years I bought evey album of hers as soon as it came out. In fact, I own more of her albums than any other artist or group. I regret I never saw her in person. I was very saddened when NPR announced her death. She was my favorite female singer, along with Barbara Streisand and Sarah Vaughan.
