I think the physical shutter for the camera is Facebook admitting “yeah, we know you don’t trust us.”
That's still way more than expected. I don't trust any company, anyway, so a company saying that they know this can only be good.

@@BaldMancTwat Are you one of those Induhviduals with a GED and a Liberal Arts degree? If you turn your PHONE OFF, it's off.

You are an NPC, please reply.
There are ways to mitigate even that, like running GrapheneOS on a Pixel 3, but usually you’ll just have to make concessions when it comes to your phone because it’s an essential piece of hardware in a modern world. You can still minimise how much you actually use your phone and only take it out with you when you actually need it. Linus: "You MIGHT actually BUY the Facebook Portal…"
Me, an intellectual: "No I actually won't..."
It was titled “You should buy the Facebook Portal.” so there’s that.
FWIW made for the grandparents demographic is accurate, I bought a pair last Christmas for my parents and my sister (who lives in a different state), so they could "easily" video chat with my sister's kids without me having to set things up for the call. At first I had to show them how to call my sis & my nieces, or how to answer a call. Now almost a year later, my "I'll only use a computer if it can cook my dinner" mother, is calling her grandkids every other day to read stories at bedtime.
I'm still not really a fan, but if it works it works. The only concession I've got them to agree with in the name of privacy, is having the portal on a power strip that they turn on when they use the portal, then off again after. In my book it falls under "it's fine, it does what it does."
That intergrated shutter for camera is like one way mirror..it's see thru from inside. :) Very clever.
"Perfect for parents"
What did you do to your kids Linus?
You know it's going to be quality when it's shot in portrait mode.
I think you've nailed their target demographic with the portal.
Everyone who can use a smartphone already has Facebook. The portal is just a device to spread their service to others
Although I'm not touching it, I do like the idea of physical shutters. Somebody brought over a laptop they wanted help with, and I noticed the camera had tape over it. At first I thought it was pretty silly, but then I remembered I actually did that myself on a phone, which might be even worse. It is hard to trust the phone has things off when it seems it does, they don't tend to be the most transparent of devices. I'd love to have hardware mute on the mic. (Doesn't mean it isn't listening 100% of the time it's on, though...)
Nice quality at beginning xd
