- In this video I review the Topeak MTX EX trunkbag and MTX Rack:
Rack: geni.us/b7tcu
Bag/Panniers: geni.us/7xWW5Zs
Waterproof cover: geni.us/topeakwaterproof
I have been using these panniers since 2015, all over the world in all conditions. I have been mostly very impressed with them, and have since bought racks for ALL my bikes so I can interchange the panniers freely.
Basic Pros:
1. Easy to get on and off 'you know'
2. Versatile with plenty of storage
3. Loaded with reflective strips
Basic Cons:
1. Not waterproof
2. Not cheap!
3. Quick Track gets stiff and gritty without cleaning

I love my topeak bag, but a 12 hour ride on the hebrideas in torrential rain did prove to me it wasn't waterproof, but that was a bit extreme, can't wait to see your adventure around the Highlands, I once stayed in a very nice air b&b next to that bridge at Connel, its a lovely part of Scotland, ride safe buddy 🏴
Yeah that’s certainly long enough to soak em haha. That’s actually from an old video from Fort William to Oban. Got a more picturesque bit of the Highlands coming out later this month. :)
Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
Thank you for watching!
Cheers for the review on these.
Cheers Jason!
Your bike setup looks really smart Tom.
This is a great video detailing the Topeak MTX bags pros & cons.
I got mine about 2 years ago now.
Thanks also for your previous advice on the waterproof cover that I'd asked you about in one of your previous videos, I got one as gift at Xmas 😊
Cheers Simon
Cheers Simon! Glad you’re enjoying them. Appreciate the comments! :)
I used the same rear bag and similar rack on a 30 day ride from Croatia back to Yorkshire last summer. It was perfect for my needs and so handy take on and off the bike. The last thing you want after a long ride is to be faffing about with pannier straps and hooks! I did have to dry bag everything once or twice for the wetter days but that was not a problem. Great bag!
Nice! Sounds like an epic adventure
Nice review there Tom. Topeak is good equipment and it seems to have served you well. I hope they watch this review and send you some goodies anyway. Cheers.
Cheers! Yeah I’ve loved the gear I’ve got I must admit. Hopefully 🤞 🤣
Thanks for these useful tips ❤
No worries! Thanks for the comments :)
Good video Tom. Great bag, had one for a while now and regularly use the made to measure topeak rain cover which is definitely fully waterproof. Worth the extra £18 IMO. I've also noticed drivers give me a little extra room when I'm fully loaded with the side compartments expanded 👍
Cheers! Yeah I love them too. I got the cover with the first bags but don’t use them that much… worth the money though for sure.
Great review, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Nice video. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers mate!
Very interesting, cheers buddy
Thanks mate!
Nice review.
Cheers :)
Great review, I do wonder if the main compartment is insulated enough for bringing your lunch to work?
Insulated from temperature? Maybe not. But it’s huge so you can fit a full grown man’s lunch in there no problem.
love the setup and review! would like to know how many Litres is on your rear? Im looking to get one but there're multiple sizes.
Thanks! Can’t remember now but I remember it being the biggest one they had so whatever that was!
Excellent review, but I'm personally interested in the performance of the front rack, especially as it has worked on a suspension fork. Has it held up up well? Any slipping or durability issues? Handling? Would love your perspective as I'm getting my first front suspension bike that will be used for bikepacking. Thanks!
Thank you! That’s one for a future video but I do dive into it a bit on here: czcams.com/video/xpGWSNCQcv0/video.htmlsi=hdhnHIBKru9pP3Jg
I wish they made it of waterproof material,My waterproof cover blew away when I was doing LEJOG in really heavy rain :( & haven't used it since I now use a Ortlieb quick rack & Ortlieb gravel bags & I'm very happy with them . Topeak also do this bag with velcro straps so you can use it on any rack ,I think Topeak are missing something by not making it out of waterproof material.Great video though .
Oh no! I agree it’s the only major drawback for me but thankfully haven’t ever had it get properly soaked much.
thanks great explainer! would you recommend this for a bikepacking trip? I've got a few 5-7 day trips planned and hoping to just get one contraption for everything I need - 7-9 kgs roughly
Yeah definitely. I have been using them for all my bikepacking films so they’re very good for bikepacking!
Thanks for the vid, been thinking about these for a while. Couple of questions, if that’s OK. Is there space for anything in the side pockets when the panniers are NOT deployed? When the panniers ARE deployed, do they clip on to the rack legs at all, or do they just hang down? Thanks again.
No worries! Yes there is some space to store stuff when the panniers are up. But there’s less room in that position than you think. The pannier itself takes up most of the room.
The panniers hang down but they have an elastic drawstring to tighten onto the bottom of the rack to ensure they don’t flap about.
@@Cycling366 Great stuff, appreciate your time in replying.
No worries!@@chrisbardell
Really nice videos! What type of Topeak rack are you using on your gravel bike? The explorer or tourist version?
Cheers! Explorer :)
What is the MTX bag like off road? Do you put extra straps on the panniers when down? Thinking about this system as i like the versitility or a couple of Ortlieb Gravel bags.
I find it great to be honest! There are some elastic loops with a tightening mechanism you can use to strap it down to the pannier rack 👍
I have these for years however I really don’t like that you can’t stand them up on their own when the panniers are in use. It’s very awkward as they collapse outwards.
Yeah I know what you mean. I can stand mine up but that’s because I have a massive drone box in them mostly so it makes it rigid, but it does splay out a bit otherwise!
Just a heads up not sure if the rack isn't been sold anymore as shows unavailable. Rest looks fine. Thanks for the vid
Cheers!
@@Cycling366 No worries at all just ordered both the rack and trunkbag via your links. Thanks for the review.
Thanks mate!
Do you need a specific rack, or is this universal?
The MTX version requires the MTX rack but you can get an adaptor for normal racks for that. You can get the Trunkbag as a non MTX version which straps down like a normal trunkbag
@@Cycling366 amazing, thank you so much! I've been struggling to find a good rack bag over the last few weeks, but your review has definitely persuaded me 🙏
No worries! Enjoy :)
