If your analog music collection still contains some precious cassette tapes, here's your chance to make those recordings relevant again. Dust off your old cassette deck and watch as Donald Bell explains how to make digital copies of your old mix tapes.
For a better audio quality result, Audacity also let's you select a silence portion of the recording (of the tape hiss) and make a custom filter from it. When you run that filter across the entire recording you get a cleaner result with the tape hiss removed. Do this before the amplify step :)
Tape Hiss? whats dat??? jk. love me some tape hiss im working on transfer of tape to mp3 right now. I actually like to leave a little hisss. Color me bad 😈
Thank you so much for this AMAZING and detailed video, I made my mamma's dream come true by showing her how to record Cassettes to the computer using an AUX cable and our desktop, plugged to the blue line input like you said. Best thing was, we didn't even have to buy any equipment! I thought we'd need to until I saw your video. You explained it well and in detail, from start to finish, and the trick with the labels was fantastic. Thank you so much again! Stay healthy :)
only thing i had to buy was an aux cord.
There is an option in Audacity to remove background hiss. really works on cleaning up tape hiss.
Noise reduction
TIP: When converting home made tapes, it is important you align your tape heads properly. To do this, change your amp mode from stereo to mono (if available). If it is not available as is on most stereos these days, there are stereo/mono switches you can buy on Amazon. Using your headphones, adjust your tape head using a small screwdriver. Usually a phillips. Most tape decks have removable doors. If so remove the door, and you can spot the screws holding the playback head in place. The screw in the left of the head is the adjustment screw. While in mono mode, adjust until the audio is the clearest. Switch back to stereo and begin recording your tape.
Great directions on how to convert cassette to MP3, well prepared and straight to the point. Thank You!
Best one on CZcams! Thank you!
only because you already know what he's talking about
Thanks a lot for getting me started. I have 4 sides of cassettes recording of a chat I with my mother before she passed that I want to share with my nieces and nephews, but also keep it in a digital format. One side of the cassette tape has a lot of distortion and faint bits, so hard to hear.
I can't believe you had the Audacity to show us this
haha
Thank you! There is also a program that searches and renames all songs according to its real title. Saves you time. (Of course, you would check to make sure after the renaming)
Is the program you mentioned by any chance Musicbrainz picard?
Got any name??
Big help, quick and direct. This one of the easiest to follow. Thanks Donald!!!!!
Thank you very much🙏🙏
thanks a million. just got my cassette convertor today and was going to record and paste each file. this makes it much more easier.
Thanks Mr.Donald for your time and effort for this illustration. :)
Well Done especially where you say "Do this only if you can't get the songs any other way" Many CDs are 75 cents (plus shipping). Thank you.
the one i looked up was $25 on amazon
1:15 This latest version of Audacity doesn't have a "Primary Sound Capture" drop down menu. Any ideas? I've got a mountain of cassettes ready to be recorded. :(
it is the menu next to the mic symbol at the bottom of the top part next to where it says stereo or mono
BADASS!!!!!! Your instructions where SIMPLE! My ADHD got in the way...I finally got it!!! Thanks!
Just scored a used Pioneer CT-W650r double bay all logic control Deck in perfect working condition... Will use it to transfer my old original music I recorded on cassette.
A very professional way to do it right, thank you
I just want to know what cord he used!!!
Look up “Aux cable” on amazon or whatever
Thank you Donald, This solves the exact problem I have! I have training cassettes that are no longer in "print". So you just made my day!
I also use "amplify" but what about "normalize", should that be used too?
Normalize is better. Click normalize, normalize maximum amplitude to -0.1, and there you go.
nice, thank you :)
Did everything exactly as instructed and Audacity registered nothing. It recorded nothing.
Having connected the player to the computer I set it to record, but all I get on the Audacity screen is a few seconds of sound and wave image before it cuts out. So the player appears to be faulty. I'm thinking of returning it unless anyone has other advice.
Hi there i am trying to record cassette tapes from my cassette to my
laptop, the only audio input is the mic socket, now my headphone/ mic
works on the mic socket put if i put audio from either the line out or
the headphone socket off the cassette no sound comes through what ever i
do, no line through sound either, i am using Audacity..just have a
straight line....have tried headphone in cassette player and that works
and 2 different leads....so at a loss....Fred in Essex. UK.
Wow this is a very good tutorial ! Very clear & no waisting time !!! Thumb's up my friend...very appreciate !
Very helpful. Thanks
I still have a huge analog collection, from cassets , over LPs to reel to reel recordings. It would be nice, if I could convert everything to mp3s. Ho0wever, as far as I know, the mic input into normal computers are all MONO. So, when we would use RCA Stereo to USB, will the recording be stereo?
I know USB can do stereo, but the I am not sure wether the cheap converters on ebay will do a stereo conversion. My second concern would be that cheap wires and electronics can also cause quite a quality loss. I still have high end hifi equipment and hate to end up with crappy mp3s.
So, my question would be: Can you suggest a converter/adapter cable that will do a really good hifi stereo job?
Look up the "ezcap" analogue to usb connector. Works great for me.
ronandmarg2011 thanks a lot
Mp3 is low quality with joint stereo (stereo) If you want lossy I would go for OGG and set it to 420 kbps. Avoid WMA unless your are into jazz and trumpets and the codec that just your windows used might to the recording may made them unplayble on earlier or later versions of mediaplayer . ACC just makes the sound hard as cd and gets you tired of listening to the files . MPC (a version of mp2 ) sound way better but is discontinued ?.
"Going into the pc" is too vague. You mean the mic jack?
No to line in because mic ...Recording as mono only not STEREO
Digital amplification looses information. There is no substitute for setting correct levels when recording!
I agree. I think that it's better to test the volume when first playing the tape and set the loudest part of the tape to near (but not at) the loudest on the "VU level" displays. This step would help reduce tape hiss during the quieter portions of the recording.
Bob Stromberg And I thought hissing was the natural part of the white noise given by the cassette.
enator71 look it up, it's the subtractive nature of most tech. It's the same reason we don't just go around blasting the ISO on our cameras, when we can just adjust shutterspeed and aperture for more natural and pleasing results.
But to be fair, he was peaking at around -10 from what I can see, which is acceptable.
what is the Audacity equivalent for iPad? Garageband too complicated. There's a program called Audacity in the iTunes store, but it's something different and junk
Thank You Finaly Someone Understands!
I still use cassette tapes to this day
I just stopped the other day when a tape I was ripping snapped when side 1 ended and I had to get a new shell and repair it
I wish you had a video for the new Audacity 3.2.5 for Windows 10
I have a question my samsung ultrabook does not regonize the input is it possible to change sound settings as some of you people said about the mac?
Why can´t it be done from the micro cassette player straight into da PC/laptop?
what levels should the audio go to? should it be full volume and peaking all the time or what?
Audacity isn’t the greatest. I’d get a freeware version of a DAW instead like StudioOne Free. Far more powerful and better effects processing. Also note you are likely to get a lot of noise from RCA cables. I’ve done this a bunch and have to clean it up in Wavelab all the time. It ultimately works out OK.
That's so good to know! Thank you. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, but I have 2 cassettes of my great-grandma being interviewed. She's next to the air conditioner and you can't tell what she's saying. My brother is a sound technician and said he'd run it through some filters if I could figure out how to digitize them. I'm so nervous I'm going to mess this up and we'll never be able to hear what she's saying! I will look up StudioOne Free right now!
Yes, I know how to set my Mac to a line-line, but I cannot seem to use my headphone jack on my stereo to transfer my cassettes because my stereo otherwise does not have an RCA line-OUT port.
Bay an adapter jack to jack 'your stéréo player have an jack output sure 'so use it
My tape deck is broken and does not make sense to repair. How do I convert my cassettes to MP3?
Problem I am having is it is breaking everything out into 6 second files. Any thoughts?
Nice video, but too fast for me. Still, a good starting point. Thank you.
I'm going to add this 1 tomy favorites . finally i can do something with the hundreds of cassettes i have laying around the house. This will come in handy. TY
How much time does it take to convert one cassette??
Please ☺️😁 reply.❤️❤️
Instantly
I tried that with my Mac, and I got nothing. :( I still haven't been able to transfer my years of old voice lessons to MP3s, yet.
thanks this worked for me but I had to turn the mic up but other then that this worked great thank you could not find the song on cd anywhere.
My laptop doesn't Pic up my super USB cassette player. What can I do
finally something useful cnet!
What are the cables you use? Basic info not provided!!!
CD usually hold approximately 80 minutes worth of music. Can you burn all the tracks into a CD, even if the tracks are longer than 80 minutes?
Stgfre no you need to split it across two CDs. If you try to put more than 80 minutes on a CD, you might damage your burner.
Thank you for the information.
If I mute my speakers, will it affect the recording? Or if I watch videos while it's recording? It took me so long to set up that I don't want to mess it up :/
Also thanks for the video!
Cody Taylor i
What do you need to connect the tape deck to the computer?
If you have a Mac you don't need to buy one of those things just switch it from output to input in the general sound settings
Hello. Can it be done with garageband?
dude don't amplify it after recording, set the correct input/mic level first! This I believe reduces noise
For some old cassette you need amplify yes
I have one tape that's faded out. Is there any way to fix that?
Finally a usefull howto. Good Job

Does anyone have the same problem using AVS Audio Editor?
Good job.

Huge help, thank you so much!!!
Excuse me. I have just recorded a cassette song on Audacity, but I can't seem to remove the vocals. Is there a way to do it? If so, how?
Thank you
I would like to do the same thing with my old mini-DV videotapes. Any ideas?
Love from India
Why don't you explain how to record while hearing the audio?

Is it possible to listen to the tape while it's recording?
+annysusieQ Yes, just plug some headphones into your computer's headphone jack. Or just crank up your speakers if you wanna annoy your neighbors/room mates :)
Bruit
Dang... a whole bunch of crap to do just to convert. Thanks for the vid.
How do you force it to amplify?
+Danosaur101 2:02 might help you. Just remember to select the audio first.
Doesn't even tell you about when Audacity won't let you select anything else but installed mic.
its on pc
Download audacity
But I got mix tapes done by DJ's who do what most DJ's call mashups. You'll never find these cassettes anywhere on the internet.

Analog is better than digital. Trust me, as I'm getting my degree in production.

You got it from the wrong website, your own fault then isnt it dumbass?
Jake Wow don't you just feel so superior? So glad there's people like you around who never make mistakes, who can set us peasants straight when we make them.
what if audascity stops in middle recording (crashes all the time).
"older pc with a blue line in." So my 2016 computer is older hmmm?
