- Today I have a tutorial on how to make a healing herbal infused oil from plantain - or any herb, really. Plantain soothes inflammation and pain and you can often find it in your backyard! This is part one of the tutorial; part two is coming next week and will cover how to turn your infused oil into a herbal salve.
// INGREDIENTS
- Plantain leaves (other optional herbs include comfrey, calendula, and lavender)
- Carrier oil - options are olive oil, sweet almond oil, or coconut oil
//DIRECTIONS
1. Dehydrate your herbs in a dehydrator, an oven, a vehicle, or by hanging them.
2. Fill a pint jar ⅔ full of herbs, pressed down.
3. Fill jar with carrier oil to ½ from the top, and screw lid on.
4. Place an old rag in the bottom of your slow cooker, and place jar(s) on top. Fill the slow cooker with water to just under the jar lids.
5. Turn slow cooker to warm (about 100-140 degrees F) and put lid on (unless the lid makes the water too hot). Replenish water as needed to maintain the original level. Infuse for 2-3 days.
6. Strain herbs out of the oil by using an old t-shirt, thin fabric, or several layers of cheesecloth. The finer the holes, the less herb particles will be in your oil. I like to hold the fabric/cheesecloth over a bowl with a rubber band.
7. Store oil in an airtight glass or metal container, out of direct sunlight. - Jak na to + styl
Oh wow, putting it in the hot truck to wilt is genius! Thanks for that ;)
I love the crock pot idea! That is so much faster than the 6 weeks of a tincture. I also love that you showed the blooper of the failing rubber band 😂My son and I recently did a ghost pipe tincture for our channel, and we're planning a plantain poultice video next, so I was glad when your video came up in my recommend feed, because the ideas were great and I enjoyed it. I gave a subscribe in support as well 👍
I really enjoy making infused oils and using them for salves. My current favorite is a mix of calendula flower oil and plantain oil; I use this on my face and, especially in the winter on my hands which tend to get very chapped. I use a kitchen strainer to hold the fabric up while I pour the oil through it. Looking forward to your salve video. TFS
I also use chewed up plantain "paste" to put on burns. Touch a hot oven rack, run outside, grab some plantain, chew and apply. The sting dimishes immediately! Sometimes I then put a bandaid or dressing over the entire area, plantain and all for a time afterwards.
Yes I bet that would work great!!
@@ArielChadwickCan I use castor oil as the carrier?
Ive had eczema all my life since about 9yo. Im 55yo now and ive used everything you can think of in the years re my eczema I had many plantain weeds in my yard which was great! Anyway i made my own plantain salve ointment and its been my miracle cure not only for my eczema but for any cuts; burns etc! I absolutely say this is a miracle weed!
That is so awesome! I'm glad you're having such success with plantain. 😊
Did you try also internal vitamin C & zink & A ( retinol ) & D?
Deficienties can cause excema.
Sulphur is sometimes helping too. In onion, garlic, broccoli, egg yolks...
@@heide-raquelfuss5580 I take those vitamins here n there. Thanks for info.
We have very little broadleaf plantain. I think the sheep ate them when they were here. The narrow leaf type is the same and we have tons of those. Oven drying can be done with just the light rather than turning the oven on. Hot truck is my go-to method too...mostly for catnip. The comfrey died off. I think it was too close to the black walnut tree. My oil will go into the black salve so straining will be through a knee hi stocking. Try adding a few goldenrod flowers next time. I won't tell you why...LOL
Thanks for your video x
Thank you
Oh great planet good to eat too there is a look a like as well
Great idea using the slow cooker. I burned a batch last summer and wow what a bad smell that was lol still worked though. I love plantain salve! With all that is going on right now I'm stocking up this year! Great video!
Good for you! Thanks. 😊
Use your fabric to line a colander then strain and it wont fall in the measureing cup or bowl.
Yes...but haven't used it yet!
We have plantain all over our yard
Do you seal the slow cooker when you put the Mason jars in it?
How much comfrey to how much plantain and do you mix the leaves in the oil? Or mix the two oils after they were infused? 😊
D you think I could heat this in my pressure cooker. Last time I did it over the normal cooker
I haven't tried that! I would maybe google it and see what the internet says. 😊
Have you made infused oil before? If you have any tips or suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
i make all kinds of infused oils i use grape seed oil its lighter
I use either Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sweet Almond Oil or Grape Seed Oil.
Would you ever sell this?? And if not do you think sesame oil would be okay for a carrier
Do you have to dry your leaves furst? Can you just naked the oil with fresh leaves?
You can use fresh leaves! Drying them allows you to pack more into the jar and the oil will be more potent that way. But I have done fresh before. 😊
@@ArielChadwick great information. Thankyou
I heard you must dry the leaves for the oil to keep longer. Fresh will go rancid in two weeks. But I suppose if you're in a hurry.....
Why do you take all the leaves from one plant? Seems irresponsible.
I gave you Tumbs down , obviously you've not done this before, otherwise you would have been super careful at pouring the mixture into the clothe, whether the rubber band was strong or weak,
You must be new at this,
Good luck .I hope you dont kill anyone in the process,
@Laura Marcacci
Blah blah blah...
I smell a fake when I see them muck up their video....
What you give, you will receive back sevenfold :)
Do you not have anything better to do than pick at someone who is simply TRYING to share some useful info???? Gheeeez get a life!
It's very helpful thank you for making this video God give us healing herbs God bless you 💓🖑
@@Romasulmona so does everything have to be perfect and pristine in your world? I actually think that it’s quite charming and teaches the viewer to realise the errors that can occur….I find this a refreshing unpretentious and informative video…..
