- Mary MacGregor: Torn Between Two Lovers (1976)
"Torn Between Two Lovers" is written by Peter Yarrow (of the folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary) and Phillip Jarrell. It was inspired by Boris Pasternak's 1957 novel, Doctor Zhivago, which featured a man in love with two women. Yarrow originally intended the song to be sung by a man.
Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio by Mary MacGregor in 1976, "Torn Between Two Lovers" reached #1 on the U.S. pop chart in February 1977 and the easy listening chart in the final week of 1976 and first week of 1977. The song also peaked at #3 on the country charts. "Torn Between Two Lovers" inspired the title of a television movie aired in 1979, starring Lee Remick, George Peppard, and Joseph Bologna, in which the song is played.

Nothing like great music from the 70's. What a special time to have been young.
Absolutely!
It was. I was born in the '60s and today I really miss the '70's when I was in high school and music was the best it's ever been!! Now I'm 60 years old and my kids call me a leftover hippy from the '60s and '70's and I always will be! These kids today don't get REAL music with all this techno crap.
Who’s listening in 2020?! 🎶🎤❤️
👍👌👍👌
🤚
🐵: you and me ……🐵
Joe Ede 😘😘
I just did
Can't believe it's been 46 years since i last heard this song. Maaan the memories of the 70s. Back when music had meaning and stood for something and people sung about love instead of the garbage of today. Gimme old school anyday anytime.
It was written for me. Lived this song a❤nd did love 2 men. Now at 74 the memories are there.
"Couldn't really blame you..." She 's right...run, don't walk.
1976, my wife of eight years had just left taking our son. There were none of the usual reasons given: no physical or emotional abuse, no excessive drinking, no “other woman”, a decent job. When asked I was told, “If you have to ask why, then that is the reason”. I am happily re-married for over 30 years with three more sons, yet still, when this song is played over Kroger’s music-cast, I still cry.
Sad and happy story at the same time
Do you ever reconnect with your oldest son? Where you allowed to stay in touch all this time with him? Soo many questions.
awww....so sorry to hear that, but sounds like you won in the end. :)
@@sharondegenstein6548 I am Arthurs oldest son, he never gave me a pony or took me to Disney Land. I heard his new kids sleep on diamond pillows and eat caviar every day. Oh and my mum said he can't dance and dyes his hair.
Sorry. Sometimes it's hard to understand.
Marines.1977.Sitting in a bar in Okinawa Japan.20 years old.Drinking Whiskey and water playing this on the juke box over and over.
This is the kind of music that will never fade,
For sure!
Her voice is just delightful. This song reminds me of the best times of my youth.
I was in Germany, when my girlfriend stateside decided to move to California and live with someone else, she sent this to me as part of the breakup letter. took long time to be able to listen to this song without hating it. we got back together and broke up again and went to our separate lives, been married 27 years, but the old songs still stir emotions.
Which is very ironic seeing as essentially the only logical conclusion from the lyrics would be polyamory, not breaking up.
@@LovuschkaThe husband always leaves. Then the lover also walks away. I know of a few who married their lovers. But he is either already married or was only attracted to her because she was unavailable.
The whole song is out of character for a woman. Clearly it was written by a man.
She possesses one of the most beautiful voices in the music world.
I just discovered this song a few hours ago. It’s currently 3am and I’m in my feelings.
I have loved this song for over 52years so true to me still think of this person with love.❤
The memories...this song takes me back as far as my memory can serve, a significantly better era than today.
So very true!!!!
Life is what you make it yourself
It's tough when you realize that what she's singing about is exactly the situation you're in at the moment. But when you also know you can't tell one of them, it tears you apart after a while.
because of this song i don't mind sharing the woman i love with another man...........
ahh, the 70's. the best decade for music lovers.
I got lucky went to a bar & Allman Brothers were playing
Antonino Cinco Jr ABSOLUTELY 😍
The best decade ever
Antonino Cinco Jr yes!
Antonino Cinco Jr the 50's, 60's, 70's and the 80's were great era's for music then the 90's crap came out and has severely gone downhill ever since, that shit Rap and Hip-Hop they think is music is pitiful.
Oh yes, the classics from the 60's and 70's;there's no other music era that even comes close. PERIOD. I feel so blessed to have come up in the '70's with all that wonderful music.
Wow, I remember I absolutely loved this song as a kid!! Wow. Memory lane.
The 70's rocked. So much music from the heart.
Beautiful Mary McGregor sweet voice
Another TIMELESS, epic song!
Always loved this song ...

+wandering trash as it should be ....I too had a galah once....but he flew away when I had a girlfriend come stay and she left the sliding doors open....never found him again....hope he survived out there....
this is a brilliant song from my youth i still love it now
Who is going down memory lane in March 2022?! Guess I'm it. Love this song. She sang so beautifully.
Been listening to this song for over 45 years ❤💯👌
This is one of those songs that you completely forgot about, but can't believe you forgot about because it's so good.
Not me actually. I never actually really forgot it, since it was one of my early favorites at about 10 yo. Although I had no idea what it was about. I just loved it. But I've got several other songs on my "I've forgotten them, and I can't seem to remember enough about them to be able to search them out" list. It's frustrating to say the least.
I love this rendition so much she has the most beautiful voice
Beautiful like an angel
There's been another man that I've needed and I've loved
But that doesn't mean I love you less. .......doesn't mean I love you less?.... what a gentle compassionate sarcastic word!
I've always liked this song. Mary's voice is so angelic like . The story line's honest and it's an inner struggle the young lady 's having. This song's classic for sure.
One of my all-time favourites - anyone who has ever been in this situation has to love this song.
Try being on the other end of this. Hurts like hell. Cheaters are cheaters.
@@stevemccoy5688 - Not everyone in love with someone else is cheating.
Are you mad at me? I don't understand,
Are you mad at me?
@@stevemccoy5688 - I don't even know you :D Just trying to point out that loving two people isn't necessarily cheating. I've been in poly relationships for years.
Absolutely Beautiful!!!!👍🥰
Best Angelic Voice sang with Heart & Soul.
Nothing can top this, Period!
Beautiful voice. Beautiful song. Lost oldie but I remember when it hit. Memories of a happier time in history.
Well said
+Bill Wilstein ...so sorry...but I think the lyrics are beautiful....
I remember it too. It inspired a TV-movies, I think starring Lee Remick.
Narcissism? The big problem that people would have with the lyrics, especially in the 1970s, is that it's a woman singing them. If it were a man, everybody (well, all men at least) would be going "Woohoo! You da stud! Way to go!" To me, the lyrics are feminist, especially in the way they're emasculating: another reason to hate it. Things haven't changed much.
Why on earth would I be angry? That's a really strange thing to say.
Such a pure and controlled singing voice, just picked up the tail end of this song in the radio, once you hear it,it stays with you, very rare in a song.
I love this song very much. It is very touching. Everytime I play this song. I can't help but cry. Tears of mixed feelings. GOD BLESS US ALL.
Mary delivers this beautiful song from her Heart !!! Can one not become Emotional, listening to Her?
Wow, makes me cry, what a heavenly Voice, before and Now, God Bless Mary, and thanks for sharing this song
One of my favorite songs..a classic song!
I remember this song from my childhood but just now realized how sweet her voice was, very talented
Omg,....i found this everlasting song.......❤❤❤
one of the great ballads of the 70's--that was the last great decade of song writing/singing---
ROFL the 70's sucked.
That's a little harsh. The 80s produced some great music. From the 90s on, I will agree with you. Especially after 2000. "Music" has been a comedy number in the last 20 years.
😢 bring back the 70’s
Beautiful song. Remember it very well.
70's 80's and early 90's (91-92) were GREAT years for music
Good beats Memorable They were like stories put to music.AWESOME
Wow. Just yesterday, I started thinking about all the awesome songs that came out when I was in my 20's...and so I searched for a bunch of my old favorites. I literally hadn't heard them in more years than I'll admit to in mixed company. Listening to them all makes me wish with all my heart that I could go back to that time... the talent of the late 60's and early 70's has never come even close to being equaled by all the stuff that came afterwards. We were lucky to "come of age" in the absolutely best ~decade of music ever.
I agree. The music kind of stopped for me in 1979. The romantics, punk boys and girls did not do it for me. I was listening to the chart of 1969 today and was singing along. Then came 1982. I swear I thought if I had known in 1969 what my beloved pop music would have become by the mid 1980s, I might have committed suicide.
You could have found these songs on here years ago. However Welcome to CZcams(Or the internet shall I say ;-)
Cindy McB
Cindy, musically it was a great time, however with the passing of time and with us seeing more years behind us than in front, don't you just find yourself pining for those carefree days of youth without worries and responsibility. just where have the years gone ??
+loosewheels1000 Days of future passed, that's where.
Beautiful song. Far beyond its time for a woman to sing such lyrics. Bravo Mary MacGregor.
she never wrote it and she hated singing the song :)
Its whore music
DJBoLtZ Really? Please tell me how you know..
ninad720@aol.com
cause i watched her on TV talking about it in 76 , Good enough for you ? lol
also ,Macgregor admitted in The Billboard Book of Number One Hits by Fred Bronson that she hated her own chart-topper, chiefly because she had little sympathy for the narrator of "Torn Between Two Lovers"
I enjoy listening with you.
Piękna piosenka kochanych lat 70 -tych !
From 1977 reached #4 In our charts!!
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES.
some songs are just sung so beautifully that they just make you want to cry fantastic song any song that can tug at your Heartstrings and get you feeling that way was beautifully written and performed
another song that doesn't get airplay on radio it deserves!!
I heard this on a 7inch vinyl aged 6 in 79 - totally heart-wrenchingly ripping yet so damn beautiful. What a fool would believe that such a little girl could be so moved by such a one-hit wonderful!!!
1970's was awesome...I was there
yes we are the lucky ones!!
Yes the 70s were great. Loved it, no worries no bills no problems. A different date every weekend. But now I've been happily married for 35 years.
When you say you were there, do you mean in the 70`s , or at the performance
Gavin Timson I meant the 70's, I'm glad I got to experience it
Bob Silver
I was a tad too young, as I was born in 68. I grew up with it, but too young to really appreciate it. Certainly a great era for music. Far better than the 80`s that I had to endure as a 12 year old starting that decade
very classic song of love ❤
Heard this when I was young. Glad I found it again.
Great ballad! I love this song so much, the words are so true ...
My Youth 🌹
Anyone who thinks they can love two people at the same time, has no idea what true love between man and woman is!!!
sorry - i disagree - if that is true, than how can people find a new love when one dies - or fall out of love and then fall in love with another again.
@@marshallmallory5264 maybe you misunderstood me. For sure you can have more than one love IN YOUR LIFE. I only wanted to say that you can not love two people AT THE SAME TIME. True love is monogamous. If you really love somebody he/she satisfies you in everything you need. You are no longer interested in other men/women. Everyone can have their own opinion, but that's mine. 😊
@@michelleprie2854 i understand now - but yes, we all have our opinion and i think it is possible to be in a polygamous relationship. Have a good weekend.
@@marshallmallory5264 thank you very much... have a wonderful weekend too!!! 🌈🌞🌈
Damn you’re green
Love this song everyone thinks of there past ,the pain of breaking up and mistakes that where made 💔 still hurts 30 years on
Never let your past ruin your future and present. Everyone is born to be happy. It's mind over matter. Don't be a victim and live life to the full
@Verónica Kennedy
Still
hurts a ton 50 long years later!
a song about my wife.it should have been written for her....i still love her to bits. always will.
missing my late partner. he is a beautiful spiritual angel man xx .This was so me for him 😢
Best song of the entire 1970s! super voice mary! joe finnegan ireland ( February 26-2017)

Yes, yes yes
And she acts like it is so true while she sings
It is, she was tag teamed.
OMG! I was 19 then... Those were wonderful days... #nostalgic
They sure were ! Summer of 76 - 👍
I was 5 but I love these songs
I was 9 years old in 1976 when this song came out.
Eu amo essa música!! Uma das mais lindas da década de 70..❤
Simply beautiful song. She has a voice of a angel. Certainly don’t hear this rare gem 💎 but still is beautiful. Incredible era . 🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️
I was only 12 when this song came out and it brings back so many fond memories as a kid in the 70's!!
Mary MacGregor's sweet and wonderful voice lights up any place. I wish she would have continue recording more ballads because she had that original talent that is hard to find in the new millennium.
"There's just this empty place inside of you that only he can fill?!?!?" "Okay, we're breaking up!"
Thank you for the one hit wonder poppies 💕😘 god bless for an eternity
Thank you for the music God bless you for an eternity it was a one hit wonder poppies 💕
wonderful voice ,wonderful words,,wonderful 70s
Yes it is , but that doesn't mean that , because you like the song , you're cheating . jeez .
She was our lead singer and pianist in the Paul Dennis stage band in St. Paul MN ... mid 60's to early 70's. Then she moved to California and later sang this song.
USA #1, 40 years ago today, 5 February 1977.
Hey oldmacisback
Can you take me back to that year.
Compared to today, it was heaven.
Just a few days before I was born :D
what a beautiful song remind me My School days
The most beautiful love song in history!!!...
I always liked this song. It brings me back to my teenage years. There was a class trip to our local skating rink. And the dj was playing this song for lady's choice for a couples skate and this girl who had a crush on me asked me to skate with her. We were holding hands skating around the rink when we came to the curve she got pulled away from our hand hold and we were separated right there and then. Oh what a memory we were torn asunder.
OMG, thank you for this beautiful song, a true story of love and confusion, frequenly happens .
SPEAK FOR YOURSELFE MARIO
I'm sorry, didn't get you.
A very beautiful song, thanks to beautiful vocals, melodious music arrangements
Stuck here listening, again...sometimes the oldies just hit all the right notes.😘😵🥴😂👏👏🥵🤧

this song plays at walgreens and working anywhere between 5 and a half hours to 9 and a half and hearing this song so many times itll drive you nuts
Beautiful song
So many voices of the 70s were so beautiful. Mary, Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, Jennifer Warnes and more.
Eu era muito jovem e pobre!! mas gostava e admirava as canções lindas da época ❤
Its been a while but i think it still a great song
Que hermosa voz de esta mujer!un bellisimo tema "Dividida entre dos amores".... al escucharla me recuerda en mi niñez cuando vivia en la cd de México.
Jeez what memories i hàve of this beautiful song i was 14 and wasnt torn between two lovers only one Hazel im now in my late 50s and never heard from her since but lovely memories never leave my mind
Loved this sing as a teen. Who knew, almost 50 years later, i would be living it. It makes me cry.

I chose the wrong person unfortunately what a twit I was 😆 Frank d song brilliant
Man does this bring back memories
Another beautiful song
Born in 69 and remember all these songs. I'm pretty blessed hey.
I always love this song
Mary has a sweetest voice I've ever heard,
Gone are those days when music is the soul of love.
Always heard this song on the Adult Standards/Nostalgia AM dial when we had good radio back in the day ❤
I love these heartfelt songs, they say how you feel and she has a lovely voice.
MacGregor sings this with a deep melancholy in her voice which says, I am the victim here.
She sounds sad, perhaps guilty, but she’s not regretful.
"With everything I feel inside, I’m asking you to stay", is one heck of a sales pitch, Hun!
OMG this song sure brings back memory of Jan 1977 when I first landed in the USA. Along with this song, there were Rubber band man, Musk rat love, Hot line, Leo Sayer's song, and Eagle's New kid in town. The radio was playing all these songs over and over. Oh, also Thema Huston's Don't leave me this way and Evergreen.
This song goes through my head every time I can't choose between mac & cheese or sloppy joes for dinner.
I'm serious.
+Mark Seeley Sloppy Joes all the way...whoever came up with that name does need help however..
