FREE Download Dither Pattern: gum.co/qbhjmk
This is an update on an old tutorial I made a year ago. Finally a REAL AND FREE PIXEL DITHER EFFECT!
Expressions:
Mosaic Horizontal Blocks: thisComp.width/effect("Slider Control")("Slider")
Mosaic Vertical Blocks: thisComp.height/effect("Slider Control")("Slider")
Slider Control: Math.round(effect("Slider Control")("Slider"))
Dither Pattern: transform.scale*comp("Main").layer("Effects").effect("Slider Control")("Slider")
In this tutorial I'm going to show you how you can create this 8-Bit dithering effect in After Effects without any plugins. You will learn how to use the mosaic effect, CC Repetile, Posterize, Slider Control and many Expressions.
i love how all of your tutorials are straight to the point, and are actually useful, thanks a lot for making those !
I said this aloud at the 1:35 mark and then saw your comment. Glad the same sentiment was noticeable
This might be literally the best tutorial I've ever watched. Told me exactly how to do something, but it isn't too overly-specific or obtuse for me to understand and modify for my own use.
I wound up spinning the dither pattern layer with the Rotation property to give my graphic some extra digital grunginess.
Other thing I did was for a smoke cloud gif I needed it to be more transparent. I set up the dithering comp and used it as a matte for my smoke. Then I did a luma key effect (since the squares are all just shades of grey it works really well) and bam, instant "fake" transparency.

You don't prefer tutorials that spend the first 5 minutes telling you they've been away for a bit coz their dog was sick but they're back now with a quick tutorial? "Ok now the first thing you're gonna wanna do is load up after effects."
Best tutorial channel ever. Quick, and straight to the point. Thanks man we need more people like you.
Holy effballz how you figured all this out is just so beyond me - you have been blessed with a special brain sir.

this video is a blessing! thank you!!
Thanks for the tut! Can you give more details about why AE's internal engine doesn't work? Even in AME, I'm having a different look than my preview :(
SOLVED: You can use AE's render, just make sure "quality" is set to "Current" instead of "Best Settings"

When I export using adobe media encoder I think its ignoring the dither pattern. or pixelated quality sampling :/
I watch these for fun while I eat haha

nice tutorial man! subscribed :)
may i ask why not use the AE render itself, is there a difference? sorry if it is a dumb question, i'm still learning how this works :)
they just act differently and have different options, rendering in adobe after effects is notoriously difficult. They are always changing what file formats are supported and how they export, it also varies from pc to Mac as they natively use different codecs. Media coder for the most part is faster and more flexible but there will be times you will want to use the after effects engine itself such as rendering transparent video. Regardless it is confusing and your best option always is to play around and see what works for you!

damn this is really cool ) somehow I managed to map the pattern on slider instead of opacity controls, but its cool nonetheless )

Heyo! This tutorial is great, but this doesn't seem to work anymore. when pickwhipping the height/width to the slider it gives the error "undefined value used in expression". Any ideas on how to fix that?
did u figure this out as its now what im facing
@@catbunny8713 nope. I ended up buying a great plugin for it instead
It works for me now, I had a letter not capitalised that needed to be I think
@J Saint-Claire if you figure out mire specifically what you did, post it so others can use it.
@@jeffiot you don't even need the pickwhip necessarily, it just helps speed things up, you can enter "thisComp.height/effect("Slider Control")("Slider")" for height & "thisComp.width/effect("Slider Control")("Slider")" for width. My issue is I had initially capitalised Height & Width which it didn't like.
But why i should use media encoder? What's wrong with AE rendering?
amazing! what if you wanted halftone instead of dither?
Wonderfull!!

Thanks for this. It's so fast and simple, but how does it actually work??
Helpline📲📥
Questions can come in⬆️.
it's creating a bunch of lines for me on a completely white background.
EDIT: I just had to rasterize the adjustment layer.
EDIT2: The rendered material, and yes, I rendered it throough media encoder, made it a mess. The blocks are not individual pixels anymore and instead a have blended and sharp mess.
oh yeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Haha glad you like it!
big fan of your tuts i use them all the time on my visual crap

Why can't it render out of after effects?
hey, when im rendering the thing it just gives me pixels, do u know why?
ok so the pixel thing is fixed, but the colors arent the same between the render and the og ae file
Currently having an issue where when I import your dither pattern, it's just showing up as a grey box. I can't figure it out!
Nevermind, my resolution was at "quarter" instead of "full"!
So This Pixel Dither Effect Was Use In You're Mine By Dagames Lol

may i ask why can't we use the internal render? i do not have adobe encoder
Because somehow the effect looks different from the preview in ae if rendered via the internal render engine.. but maybe its fixed..
@@benlaorg5807 I think this might be fixed? For my workflow I'll create elements in After Effects, export those as ProRes 4444 direct from AE and bring that into Premiere.
