I graduated high school magma cum laude. I was not encouraged to go to college. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I did want to become a flight attendant (in 1980). My dad told me no. I did sign up for community college for the fall semester. I ended up getting a full time job working at a bank. It was too hard working full time and full time college with 16 credit hours. So I dropped out. My brother was a year behind me. My parents told him he needed to go to college and they paid for it. Note they refused to pay for my community college schooling. They also bought my brother a car but if I wanted a car, I had to buy it. Times were different back then.

My parents came from poor families and learned to work hard. My dad got his education and my mom opened up a restaurant (and had it for 34 years). When I graduated HS my mom said that I needed to work in the family business and my father never pushed for college. I wish he would have. I would have had such a different path in life. I am an electrical engineer finally in my late 40's, and it's hard having bosses that are fresh out of school at 25. My wife got her degree early and her father pushed college. We are pushing our son to go to college and he knows he wants to go (senior in HS). I hope he is the young success I wasn't. Our daughter was given the golden ticket as well and she chose the broken, hard path. She's slowly figuring it out. Everyone is different and has to choose what's important and how to achieve those goals.

I’m sorry but if my kid tells me he/she wants to be an astronaut. I’m going to support them. If they tell me they want to be president of the United States, then I’m going to support them.
NO DREAM TOO BIG, NO DREAM TOO SMALL!
