Could be 1973 as Shearwater 3 is Black with red foils and hull, it was red with blue hull and foils from 1974 after Shearwater 4 started service.

Cowes Castle (Southampton to Cowes) was built in 1965, rebuilt in Belgium 10 years later; and in 1994 was sold to Croatia and renamed Nehaj.
    Love the Watneys IOW depot!

Remember these ferries, cars used to drive on, there was a turn table at rear end for them, lorries use to have to reverse onto ferry

I seem to remember that the "old red funnel" boats used to drop the foot passengers on the west side of Cowes and the car passengers east side...am I right in thinking that??

you used to be able to embark and disembark with your vehicle from the west side of cowes too.
when this stooped I don't quite remember, but we used to in the 1970s.

@@ISLEOFWIGHTARCHIVE thanks for that info. used to come to the island on our annual school trip..the whole school! Blackgang, Sandown etc., Always loved going on the ferries! I distinctly remember the Cowes castle - that series wasn't exactly the prettiest boats around but did sterling service. Anything on archive for Lym/Yar?? That used to be my preferred route as a young man with a car!
