  • The Mercedes W123 is famous for bombproof reliability, but infamous for rusting EVERYWHERE. My bought-sight-unseen 200 sadly hasn't got away from rot scot-free...

    Great job. Given the “whilst you are in there”, i would have rust treated the parcel shelf both over and under it and the rear pillars wax injected. Greetings from Greece

    I just stumbled across this video on my homepage, what a result. I have the same car in a coupe and I have the same issue. I had purchased a new seal but I was never convinced the seal was the problem, now I know where else to check ! thank you sir.

    It's so nice to see that this type of rust damage can still be fixed today.
    Excellent work!

    I have a 1985 300D and had a 1984. Almost no rust in California, other than both had rust in the middle of the bottom rear windshield channel, which seem typical. That is often a source of rainwater leak into the trunk. If not rusted thru, you might be able to halt damage with glass-in by prying up the rubber gasket on the outside, cleaning gunk and apply butyl rubber, either from a caulk gun ("elastomeric caulk") or preformed rope you roll to thinner diameter. It will squish out over time, but can cut it off with a blunt putty knife. Similar is used on camping trailer windows.

    Fibre class can be ok sometimes, but it is porous so it will not keep water out. If I wanted to keep water away I would also apply a wax gel coat mix, but i have never seen it in a car shop. Fibre class does not replace anything structural on a car.

    @8:43 oh well that headliner. Supposed to be tucked in on the window lip before the seal goes in.
    If you have not used sealant to seal that rubber seal, the same problem will come back. Water is not supposed to get inside of that seal.
    That rear glass is not laminated so it's quite tough to break, unlike the one on w126s.

    This is brilliant! I too have just bought a white W123 through WB and Sons and although I haven't got it home yet (over 300 miles north of Newcastle), I had already decided to take out the rear screen to look for corrosion before it took a hold, and probably the windscreen as well. They won't look good forever without a bit of help. I'd also be very interested in any work you plan or do in relation to the sunroof drains. Only just discovered your channel - enjoying the content and the fluent and entertaining delivery.

      @@MillerCorner That's the one. Looking forward to picking it up next month and will follow progress with yours with interest. I think they will be very similar in condition and what may lurk below the immaculate surface!

    Good job Joe. I have a similar issue with mine and I haven’t found the real cause of condensation in the boot.

    • @MillerCorner
      @MillerCorner  Před rokem

      Boot seal could be an issue? I've cured the leak now obviously, but I'm stilling getting condensation... 🤔

      @@MillerCorner I recently found out it wasn’t the boot seal, but still have some condensation, but not as much as before

    Why didn’t you take the opportunity while the glass was out to fix the rust on the top edge of the glass ?

  • @spencereagle1118
    @spencereagle1118 Před rokem

    I truly hope that's the last of the rust, but finding a fiberglass repair on the rear window surround would lead me to suspect there are more hidden elsewhere.

    Would like to see how he welded it? What did it cost in usd? It seems to be confusing as to how he welded in a curve and the double levels of sheet metal. Thanks for video!

    • @MillerCorner
      @MillerCorner  Před rokem

      Sadly I had to get to work, so I missed the welding work going on, but I can tell you the cost was £200, done in about five hours total 👍🏻

  • @petercollingwood522

    Unfortunately these windshild seals, front and rear, become moisture traps as they age and deteriorate. So this will be a standard problem on all of these eventually. Need to keep an eye on the front. Where did you get the seal and how much did it cost if I may ask? I have read that they are becoming hard to find.

    • @MillerCorner
      @MillerCorner  Před rokem

      Hi Peter, I'll keep an eye don't you worry! I believe it was from eBay, about £50

      @@MillerCorner Thanks. By the way, I commented on your other video from a month ago. The W123, of which I've owned several is the best car ever made. And the best there ever will be.
