How to Dry Paint Properly No Scratches

  • AMMO Hydrate is one of my favorite products because it is designed to correct a major problem I was having on extremely rare painted surfaces. I discovered that improperly DRYING your car caused just as many scratches, as improperly washing your car. So I needed to figure out a better (ie...safer) way to remove water from the surface of delicate paint because traditional methods (squeegee, water blade, and old chamois) were effective at removing water, but introduced unnecessary scratches during use. (Using air is a great option, but most of my clients old cars to do allow safe usage, due to the paints extreme sensitivity) I solved my issue by creating a product that adds lubrication between the drying device and the surface of your paint....But this discovery only got me half the way there. I need to re-think the drying device as well. I wanted to a tool that not only picked up water,, but would pick up any "remaining dirt" left on the paint after a wash. My first choice was a traditional microfiber towel (at +/- 300 gsm). However, everyone knows, that dry microfiber towels don't pick up water naturally. It's somewhat difficult to soak up standing water effectively. So I hit a road block....then I thought about getting the MF towel wet or "damp"...and it worked perfectly! (why?, I'm not sure...but it does. When a MF towel is "damp" it seems to remove water from the surface of paint much more effectively)
Now I have a soft and safe device to remove water (and "left over" dirt) from the surface of your paint, with the help of a hydrophobic lubricant that adds depth and shine to the surface you are drying. (This took forever to figure out, but was totally worth it. Hydrate is a game changer and the product I am most proud of because no one has ever thought of drying your car as a major part of paint care or "preventative" maintenance.

I only detail my own car, and I use AMMO stuff. It really isn't that expensive. I have owned my car for two years and just finished my first bottle of skin. Foam is 17 bucks. This stuff is not that much more than inferior stuff that may not be as safe. Plus if you go to a car wash you are spending at least 20 bucks every two weeks. Plus the less you have to polish out scratches the better. That is time consuming for the amateur like myself. The first batch of paint regimen I bought off Larry for 125 lasted almost a year and a half!

That term was lost here in the US, electricians carpenters plumbers still remember that phrase and apply it to their trade every day. So it stands to reason to learn as much as you can and apply your skills to your trade so your rewards will be greater.

In case you're still wondering why this works. it's because water molecules bond with other water molecules through something called a hydrogen bond. It's the reason water puddles up together, and it also explains why adding water to your microfiber cloth will actually make it more absorbent. Although it won't hold as much water as a dry cloth, it will definitely pick up water much more effectively, as the water in the cloth bonds to the water on the car (which is not bonded to the car), so it just gets picked up by the cloth. It's awesome to see that at work though, I'm going to start using that trick! Thanks!

Water breaks hydrogen bonds formed within the fibres. This makes the fibres softer, and the exposed hydroxyl groups make the surface more hydrophilic. It's the latter process that makes a damp cloth more able to soak up water than a dry cloth.

when it comes to a very dark colored car you can simply wipe the car or just lean on the car with your hand and there will be a scratch in the paint lol. I use a soft water blade and a 700-800 loops per square inch microfiber drying towel... and I don't run onto problems... if I missed a spot(because nobody is perfect) I skip it with the blade and catch it with the microfiber. because I do mobile detailing I use 100% soft water so outside in the sun is not a problem and car stays wetter longer even with soap on it (not saying to leave it on for an extended time) I use a foam cannon so as I'm washing the car it stays soaped up and wetter longer giving me and the soap a chance to work. as far as the water blade always get a soft blade and thoroughly rinse vehicle... if vehicle is relatively contaminant free (by claying) and waxing then dirt (what little there is) will be captured/suspended in the water droplets and glide right off wether it be with the blade or just wether it just roll off of the car.
bottom line guys is when it comes to dark colored vehicles they are always going to be more reflective and amplify imperfections no matter what you do. if you are that asinine about your vehicle. it would be best to get the paint as close as possible to perfect and apply a ceramic or glass coating. this will help greatly. otherwise you will maybe once every 6mo to a yr always need to polish and wax your vehicle to keep that clarity in it. I can agree that a microfiber drying towel is superior to a chamois

This is an old video and I watched it already but revisiting it, You said this is a new category of products!
I've been using Sonax High Speed Wax after every single wash based on their recommendations. They say: "Use it after you dry the car or while the car is wet after washing it". It will give you a long lasting protection lasting many weeks and adds deep nice shine to the car which is what I noticed!!!
This product is there on amazon.com since 2010 and on amazon.de since 2007!!!
Maybe in the US, you don't have such category of products!
When spraying it on the car while it's wet, it does exactly what your hydrate does. Repels water, makes drying easier and after the car is fully dry within 30 minutes you can notice the gloss.
Good video and keep up man, You are a top notch!

Great information... recently bought brand new 2017 explorer... about a month ago... keep it in my garage here in Toronto...and have had it sprayed/rust proofed... washed a few times by hand ... my own.,. Have always been careful how I wash but have learned better ways lately thanks to some of your vids....question .... I'm itching to put on my first coat of protection... not wax but some sort of paint sealant....seeing as the paint is in near new condition, I'm not planing of doing any polishing... am I ok to do clay bar at this point... just want to get it as clean and smooth as possible before applying the paint protection....any thoughts?

I got my AMMO Hydrate and used it today after I washed my car, and I can tell you that this stuff works. It did leave some very minor streaking in small patches, and I think that was due to my towel being to wet, but it did not stay there. It is true that this product does vanish. I did a test and sprayed it right on the wet paint and the water about ran from it. My car is silver and in the sun I had to put my sunglasses on it was so bright. This product works all. GET IT....... It also smells GREAT

I own a full service hand car wash, and we have been using damp towels for more than a decade to dry after the car is air dried. The science reason the damp towel works better is because of the water's capillary action. Water has hydrogen bonds, and it tends to pull towards other water molecules.

I’m very intrigued at the Hydrate product, as I’m always trying to perfect my washing/drying technique. But I have one question. I already have Ceramic Coated my car, and after a proper wash, I just dry it with a dry high GSM microfiber towel _lightly,_ then hit it with a silicone SiO2 spray (CarPro’s Reload). Can I use Hydrate during the dry process and still use the silicone spray afterwards, or is that overkill?

Subbed! This guy gets it! Too bad im here in the Philippines with no way to buy your products..Great video! So few videos offer this kind of detail to a car. It is actually very hard to actually take care of a cars paint..a question though, do you recommend using a blower (electric leaf blower) to blow off and let the water run down and then carefully wiping the remaining water (with a few quick detailing squirts on the drying microfiber)?
Currently on sonax paint protect with polymer.
Thanks for the reply if ever.

Good video larry. I stopped using that chamois almost a decade ago and have been using microfiber towels ever since. I actually bought a car dryer for my car, like the ones they advertise on speed channel during commercials. It like a blow dryer but for cars. Would that be sufficient in drying my car? Or would that create dust, making it worse when i wax the car following it?

  • @AMMO-NYC

Rich, great question. It should work with "another sealant" but I can't give you a 100% answer because I haven't tested that product, nor has it been made to work specifically with my sealant. (having said all of those lame disclaimers...I'm sure it will work great. If there are issues, just send it back and I will make you whole again) Thx Rich

I spray and wax but it could be on water like all wet just like that and I spray the wax on it and wipe it down right? I go to a car wash that washes your car but I don't have those things that are spinning that wut scratch your car but is that okay for me to do I will watch the whole thing for me and I will just dry it with a microfiber is this okay then I could spray wax to after I'm finished drawing?
