Softbox Technique for off camera flash Tutorial

- Gavin Hoey out on location at the beach shows you a technique using the smick 60 x 60cm Strobe softbox. First of all using an exposure for the background and adding a small amount of light to the model, then increasing the flash giving more light to the model. Finally slow down the shutter to give more exposure to the background and the model.
With a Strobe softbox it is very portable you can shoot night looking scenes during the day so go ahead and try out these techniques see what effects you can achieve. We can ship this softbox to the UK and most EU countries.

I have watched hours and hours of flash photography tips, and this is the first and only tip I have seen on how to meter with shutter priority mode. This is the best tip i have seen so far! Thanks for sharing!
MacBookBro1 I think the Gavin Hoey video’s give great clarity and understanding, this video although it is quite old is still relevant.
Best video on using a flash I've seen! Now I finally get it!!! Thank you!!
Praise indeed Thank You.
Light, portable, easy access to s/lite controls plus it can tilt and cheap to, compared to Apollo 28"...impressed.
You can get your child to sit and pose...I am jealous. My kids run from me when I need test models lol
This video change my mind I learn a lot, since I saw it my photos are definitely better, thanks Gaby.
This is the best off camera flash tutorial in CZcams. Fantastic job explaining the overall goal and the basic camera settings. Thank you!
This is explained excellently by Gavin, if you are in the UK Gavin is holding a workshop in August go to www.gavtrain.co.uk I have already signed up for this.
RPO totally helped me 🙏👍✌
thanks Gavin - using the stobist techniques for a while but always struggled with the ambient vs flash equation - this really helped
THanks for the video. Appreciate your time.
Just to add another tip from your great video. You can use an ND filter to shoot wide open instead of f18 and get shallower depth of field. That's giving us a more natural look and dissociate your subject from the background.
Its also in the philippines. Hey! you explained everything that I needed to know.
i had the soft box only sitting in my room.. and now i am taking it to a shoot... thanks so much!
So glad it helped.
Happy Christmas :) just got this today and really look forward to using it on a fashion, location shoot. Seems very robust and great quality.
Hey that's a younger Gavin Hoey! His tuts have been really expanding my photography brain. Still relevant 10 years later!
Yes He was really good for us when we were in business and he go's from strength to strength. His video's although 10 years ago still get regular views.
@@smickphoto
Are you no longer in business
@@BazAmanda60 Hi No we closed up in 2018
@@smickphoto thanks for the reply
Sorry to hear that
@@BazAmanda60 I retired that's why we closed
Damn that's why I watch these tips on CZcams, awesome simple tip
Still relevant in 2019. It reinforces one of the main "epiphanies" I had this year for indoor and outdoor; drop the exposure until ambient light is almost gone, then restore the image with controlled artificial light. Most of my photography was outdoor activities where there are no do-overs and the action is at such a distance a flash would not be a factor (canoe races, motorsports).
Thanks Gavin. This really helped.
Keep uploading new videos.
Just what I was looking for. Great tutorial! Thanks
Great tutorial! Exactly what I needed. Thank! I'm learning how to shoot with speedlight.
I bought it!! ^_^ THANKS for your great tutorials!!! :D
Another brilliant video thanks once again
Thanks Gavin!!! Good Job.
Such a wonderful video Gavin... Best regards from Venezuela mate!
Great Tutorial! Thank you!
Great tutorial!
This is a nice little video and as one said, the use of ND filters allow much more shallow DOF - I love a 6 stop ND for this
Fantastic video :D
fantastic mate
@HighSierraBob It does work with those speedlights but its only available in Europe.
Thank you very much, this was helpful :)
great video, thanks!
Nice one Gavster
This was very helpful.. Even though it is a pretty simple technique I wouldn't have come up with it myself :)
Thanks for the video, I am ordering that softbox. It is just as good as the Lastolite, and it costs about 1/4 of the price! Actually I think I will order 2 of them!
Love to see a video when you are actually folding back that softbox
+Camilo Márquez Villegas You can either here czcams.com/video/DsdYyROFV4c/video.html or here czcams.com/video/EqwcUlK8KFA/video.html
Thanks!
Does anyone know if there are different shape softboxes that would this setup? I was able to attach the ring to my beauty dish with great results, but I would like to have some strip boxes as well.
@emmyfairyswispers Gavin uses Canon gear so either 580ex or 430ex but use a flash that is compatible with your camera.
@IsisMqs He is using a 580EXII which is the Canon top of the line flash so SB900/sB800 would be the Nikonista equivalent. As for performance of a flash in broad daylight in an octabox - you are using the flash to fill in the shadows not overpower the sun so any flash should do, especially if you keep it close to your subject.
muito bem eplicado só resalta usa filtro ND..
wonderful. how do you connect the flash to the camera without using any wire?
I love softboxes.
Is a matter of likes and style but actually, I liked more the picture at 1/2 power than the one at full power.
Thanks for the post, is always good to watch videos like this one... have a great day and keep making videos.
That's because in manual mode it shows the current camera setting in Tv mode it meters it and will show the ambient aperture needed.
@pomeranets The brand is Micansu

Very useful This video sir, , big thank you sir R.MANOHAR ,Chennai.India
Gavin Hoey made some informative videos thanks for watching.
Hi Gavin,
Very good tutorial. I have a question: Can you use lightsphere instead of softbox and will it get the same result ?
Hi Gavin, are you taking the reading on TV mode ( 250)and then switching to manual mode? did you remain with the reading when using the speedlite? thank you much!! Great products and videos!!
Very good tutorial but I wondered why u used firstly Tv mode to know f value? Can't u do that with M mode by setting shutter speed on 1/250s and then changing aperture untel metering match zero value?
Love the video…thank you very much : )
Glad that you found it useful.
Would u happen to know if this soft box would suit a Godox AD360 barebuld flash and would the LumoPro LP605 Compact 7.5ft Stand w/Ground Spikes be sturdy enough? Many thanks
What would the settings be if you had an object in the background you wanted to be out of focus. With the f stop at f18 it would possibly be in sharp focus. ISO down as far as pos and speed as hi as poss will still give over exposure and fear of going over sync speed.
@KungFUcat10 The sync speed will be in your camera manual
I can't tighten the soft box to the angle I want because of the weight of it. How do I fix this problem?
Q, did I miss you mention ISO preference? What do you reccomend in deciding ISO for a desired shot .i.e. in this case do you choose ISO first?
how zoom in the lamp??
Hmmm... You're getting f16 with a 580 ex II at ISO 100 thru 2 diffusing panels? Even at 1 meter I'm quite surprised. Did you end up removing the inner diffusing panel? I would expect something between f5.6 and f8...
Hey Gavin thank you for the tutorial. Is the smick 60 x 60cm stobist softbox only in UK? cuz im in Canada
Interesting workflow Gavin. But instead I use AV mode to get an initial reading.
Commercial and a tutorial nice
I have a canon 550d.. can I do a meter reading like you did in this video for the clouds? and how? thanks
@fmashqur Hi Sorry we only sell in the EU countries so this is not available in Canada
@Dubfire73 Choice of ISO is not so important depends on the ambient light and what result you want.
Is there enough height adjustment to use a wireless trigger mounted to the bottom of the flashgun? i haven't got a fancy built in wireless flashgun so i would like to use a trigger with it.
thanks
@shalukuttan You need a wireless trigger there are many on the market.
What's the best way to trigger the external flash? I have a 420EX and a T2i
As long as I have a bracket , I can use a speed light 💡 with it
Great and very helpful review. Is there a flash trigger that you can use that will allow you to adjust the flash power from the camera, so you don't have to go move the softbox constantly?
Bernie & Jessica Hunt There are quite a few triggers that can do this, depending on the flash and camera you have.
@@smickphoto I have a Fujifilm xt2, and several flashes:, yongnuo, Nissin i40, Neewer, and Canon...
Bernie & Jessica Hunt unfortunately triggers are flash compatible only and will only work with the same make. For the Fuji Nissan might make a trigger to operate it remotely, I know that Godox make a specific trigger for the Fuji but you have to use the Godox flashes.
@gadge1275 i might be tired, but to get the background out of focus, wouldn't it be a bit better to turn f/stop all the way down to get the lowest depth of field possible? f.2 - high exposure and background out of focus, f.18 - a lot less light and exposure but pretty much everything in your picture will be in focus...
What the potency of this flash? Can you tell me if the SB400 or SB900 can have a good performance in daylight with a octabox? I'm sorry If you said in the video, but english is not my mother language and sometimes I loose some information. Thanks again!
Bowens mount made the speedlite installation easier. Even that, useful tutorial.
Bowens is normally associated with studio strobes so don't know what this is?
The mount in the video is not what I was expecting, so I checked the video date, being 2010. Now it's common to have an S-Type Bowens that features a padded "vise" to clamp the speedlight into the mount and the whole works gets pushed into the back of the softbox. I just bought the gear last month. Super easy and inexpensive ($50 for softbox and S-type Bowens mount including the bracket to drop onto the light stand.)
@fmashqur
It seems identical to the Lastolite 60 x 60 Hotshoe Ezybox, so if you can get Lastolite in Canada, you can get an identical product. Or try the Westcott Apollo Softbox, a very good 28 inch flashgun box.
how did the camera read f18 at 1/250s that would be too dark don't u think and i don't suppose u'd take the iso that far up ...plz if there's something i don't understand let me know ... thanks
very very good very very good
wel you can use this system with any softbox or ?
If you look in the viewfinder you will see the shutter speed and aperture displayed there.
How do you find the shutter speed sync speed for the flash
You sound and remind me of David Mitchell from the Peep Show... complement by the way :D - Love the tutorials :)
Half depress the shutter button and the shutter speed and aperture show in the viewfinder.
do you use any filter? if yes, what filter you use?
I se that you are in M mode on you flash and you are using a trigger on your camera, Canon :) but for nikon users how would you do it with no trigger??
@gadge1275 f18 @1/250 in heavy overcast sky must mean he has a pretty high ISO, perhaps 800-1000. At ISO100 and same shutter speed you can open your aperture by 3-4 stops (approx f/4) and introduce a shallower depth of field. If you want to open it up further - 2.8 or less - you'd need a ND filter.... or high speed sync, if your camera has it.
Whats brand of softbox do you use here? I have one like yours but i think it is a 40x40. Like to but a bigger one like yours 60x60. Cheers.
can you please help me, I have my canon 430exii, I am unable to make it compatible with my canon 5ds. I am clueless what to .do. I've tried so many ways but still doesn't work. Thank you.
What do you means unable to make it compatible?
How did you mount the wireless systemt on the flash? I cant see it on the flash.
Its mounted on the hot shoe but some flash systems have the wireless incorporated into the flash.
Is smickphoto your company as well, or were you asked to do these videos? Because you alone makes me wish I could order internationally (I'm in the US) just to support this. Great tutorials, great products, excellent photographer with an amazing personality.
You would set your strobe to remote/slave and your camera's flash mode to commander. When you do this your pop up flash acts to trigger your off camera flash by the IR receiver in your flash. This works in all but the most extreme bright sunlight. I just shot a wedding with a sb700 inside of an apollo orb which was facing away from me and into the sun and it worked You also wouldn't necessarily have to shoot manual flash, you could have the flash in TTL mode, which makes for a bit faster setup.
What lens were you using to shoot the model?
How do I find this :p I use Nikon.. great video by the way
Gavin Hoey looks young in this video
Ha! Ha! Yes he did, so did I.
Did you have to worry about diffraction at all at f/18?
Hi. Why not use a lightmeter?
Do you ship to the United States ?
@gadge1275 Use an ND filter to reduce shutter speed
I'll be using the on camera flash to trigger the off camera flash. Can you tell me if the off camera flash has to physically see the on camera flash to fire or will it still fire even though the soft box will well and truly hide the flashes from each other? Thanks.
+joe nick The flash is outside the softbox just make sure the sensor on the front of the flash faces the master flash on your camera.
Could you tell me the exact item on the slick site? Loved the video.
+Laura Bednarski Hi Yes this is the item www.smick.co.uk/sonline/strobe-accessories/strobe-softbox.html
Where is this made and will it work with a Nikon SB-800/900? Also, do you ship to the US?
hi . I have a question What lens are you using??
@smickphoto Do they ship this to US?
it is nice one , but i need more tips
when you made the reading for the sky, at 1/250, what was your ISO at?
+sigmund alcover Hi I really don;t know what ISO Gavin was at but the important thing is the balance between ambient and flash.
You look very young for this clip smick
Hello Gavin, Can you please tell me what is the difference between speedlight (high speed sync) flash and outdoor speedlight (high speed sync) strobe
Gavin stopped doing videos for us in 2011, there is no difference high speed sync is high speed sync
This Japanese man uses Cactus CB 60, I bought it after watching him and like it so far. czcams.com/video/X8nmvm0fcH4/video.html
Also, watch the following photographer, he said he uses 2 small softbox instead of using 1 big one because big sofbox is easily blown away by the wind. czcams.com/video/Z8m3bm6hC74/video.html
