Hey mate as an apprentice boiler maker trying to find things to make to get extra experience and to find my own feat working for myself this has helped me alot so thank you and keep on grinding bro 🤙🏽
Thank you!!! Best of luck my friend
Great video. Gives me the idea I've been looking for. Thanks
Happy to help
Great advice. I just spend the day crawling through the attic to run 240V to the garage. Should be up and welding some time tomorrow! Great idea for a project to try and sell.
We do the same thing. I'm just trying to find a way to support the family. Construction without a degree is almost impossible in california
@@Literature-ft8ru Have you done trailer ramps?
I've only stuck with hobby projects and haven't tried to do a production run on anything. Curious how that goes.
Great video gave me lots Ideas in welding
Thanks for making these videos
Thanks for watching them
Awesome video, and great way to utilize your knowledge to bring in money... Wish I had the knowledge of welding... I think it'd be a great way to make some money and be enjoyable income... What would you recommend for minimum welder size for something like these type projects??
I gave you a like for the very good dog.
Thanks he’s a good boy! Just turned 2
Very smart idea
Which one of your welders you used for the ramps? I saw a Hobart and a Lincoln in a dif video. Thanks
Short circuit mig with .035 wire
Hey bro that’s legit good advice. I know a guy that bought some ramps on marketplace and the guy he bought them from told him the same thing.
Excellent video!
Although I would ask, dont forklift forks have to be forged? not welded? or is that a myth?
Fork extension all the ones I’ve seen have been welded.
@austinanson8357 and you don't really even need to weld those... we just cut a square hole on 1 side, big enough to weave the fork threw then it just sits perfect on the fork...
Hey boss how much are you charging per ramp?
If you wanted to do mobile welding jobs, what kind of mobile generator would you need to support a welder like that?
I’d recommend at least a 10,000 watt. But really a engine drive is what you want. I got by for a while with a 6750 watt generator. But a engine drive is a lot faster
How thick of material do you use
How much do you sell that stuff for
I’m 20 years old, currently in welding school. I’be only been welding for about two years, still learning though.
I’m considering making my own business in welding making small home projects (tables and basic household appliances and decoration. I’ve made some pretty cool stuff that I think I can sell each piece probably around $30.
But I’m having trouble finding material for an affordable price, I’ve tried automotive shops, metal fabrication warehouses(for scrap), Facebook market place. I know how to weld in all positions so welding isn’t a problem for me it’s more so getting material to actually get started and get to work. Any advise?
And how do you get material?
I go to a steel yard, my question is if you can sell something for 30 dollars how much does it cost you to make it?
@@austinanson8357 I’ll try to go to a yard today. I hadn’t considered that yet.
I know this guy he sells me bulks of rebar for $75 for 25pcs (8ft and 1/4’ rebar) so with one rebar I can make this project I’m familiar with which I can sell for $30. So one rebar cost $3.
Do you have a build sheet or material list? For my the ramps
As a new welder looking to make extra cash on the side, could you maybe do a video of more ideas like the rocket stove? Id feel more comfortable as a rookie building things that people won’t have to rely on to carry a load. Great video! Just subbed 😁👍
Yeah I definitely can do
How much for the ramps
Question, Should you be a welder if you're not willing to travel?
Depends what you want to weld
great idea,,, would really like a bit more information though.....what do you charge for a set of ramps....and what do you charge per hour for fabrication or do you do by the job instead.....
I have been fabricating and building and repairing utility trailers and so far so good many questions on the ramps side. please give a bit more information on the cost to profit you have figured...
maybe a long shot but do you think you could share the plans for the load ratings and such...
Yeah so field repairs I charge $100 an hour and shop work I charge $80 an hour. These ramps right now are $275 for a set. Materials are around $110 then some wear on my chop saw and some welding wire and gas and so on and so forth. So figured I’m $125 now I have building these down so I can cut tack and weld a set in just under 1 hour or can do 3 sets in just over 2.5 hours. So on these I’m making $150 a hour. Rating on these is 8000lb
@@austinanson8357 how thick is the steel and what type of steel are you buying like the shapes and what not im a new welder and i love doing it and trying to make some money off it also is flux welding as strong as mig im only 17 and cant buy any gas for my welder?
It’s 4.1# c channel. 3 inches wide, with 2 inch angel iron 3/16 wall. Flux core would be strong enough but make sure you know what your doing, maybe test some weld first. Don’t want anyone getting hurt
@@austinanson8357 thank you I greatly appreciate it any tips on the settings of the welder i use a lincoln and the voltage is letters instead of numbers so im still figuring that out my self and how would i test up to 5000 pounds
Just make sure you have good welds, deep penetration, uniform welds and no porosity, weld a t joint on so scraps and cut it in half to make sure your getting clean welds
Thanks
how wide do you usually make them?
I'm listening...
How did you get the weld ramps analyzed by your friend? I was looking at making different sizes for people but need someone to do and analysis on the design.
Well I sent him a rough drawing and he drew it up on a software, then he let me know how much weight they could hold
What thickness do you use?
Depends on what they are loading, most cases 3/16 angle and 3”x4.1# channel
Do you know what type of steel you’re using?
Hot rolled steel A36
Is the load rating you found per ramp or for the pair?
Pair
Hay brother.
I have been welding at Selfridge airforce base sence 1997. I will be retired in 2026.
Looking to go on my own as a mobile welder. Can't waite.
That’s sweet, I’m sure your experience from the air force base with transfer over nicely to field work. Congratulations
Bro this is the perfect idea for my area. Glamis is right around the corner from me, and my city is the lettuce capitol of the world (massive agriculture industry). I read in one of the comments you use 3/16 thick, but I wasn’t sure what the 3, 4 1# meant. You mean 3” or 4” angle? If so those are friggin beef! My Langmuir XR just showed up the other day for custom fab work, and these will definitely be a part of my sales!!! Thank you brother!!
Glad I could help, 3” x 4.1# is the c channel I use on the side. Then 2” angle iron 3/16 thick
@@austinanson8357 thank you brother. I’ve never bought c channel before so the numbers didn’t make sense.
Gotcha yeah the 4.1# number is what it weighs per foot
@@austinanson8357 thanks brother!!
I live in the Coachella Valley about two hours away from Glamis but their’s a lot of off-road in this socal area!
What’s the blue prints and size angle line your using
2” angle iron every 10 inches
How wide are they
@EdgarGarcia-gv5hr 15”
What’s the load rating for your stock 2x2 angle ramps?
I think 4k
Hey man. These trailer ramps are a great idea. Are these slide in ramps?
Yes they are made to replace those types of ramps. They fit most trailer
@@austinanson8357 ok thanks for replying. Is it just a piece of angle iron that seats the ramp onto the trailer? I'm going to make one of these for my trailer
In most cases. Yeah just a piece of angle iron
@@austinanson8357 ah okay appreciate it man
Of course, if you need anything else let me know, I hope this project goes good for you! Would love to see a picture when it’s finished
Good 👍
How can i reach out to you ive been welding for 12 years and am looking to set up a small mig shop in my garage
Well first thing would be getting insurance. Next would be identifying your market and start welding stuff
@@austinanson8357 what do you mean by identifying your market?
Are you insured.
Smooth from the Detroit.
Yes I am insured.
What do you pay for liability insurance?
2000/year
What are you charging for these
Generally 300-700 depending what type they want
That's really cool man I got to get started u think those would work good with a little 125v flux core welder 035 wire
R to weak
Hell how much r u letting those go for
I don’t know if a 125v welder would be enough. Especially if your doing heavy equipment ramps. I have a system down to where it doesn’t take me more than 45 minutes to make a set of ramps, but I make a lot of different sizes and length. So I average anywhere from $200 to $800 dollars depending on what they want
Hell yeah man thanks for responding means a lot alot of people ain't like that know more
Always try to respond
Every shop needs a dog!
What size and how long are they love wacthing your videos I’m a new guy starting out
I make them 15” wide and 5’ long and make a lot of them for stock, but I build all different sizes for people
Is that all angle iron that you use
On some of them heavier ramps I use 3” c channel
Do you have insurance? I've been told I should get around $1 million coverage?
Yup I have insurance, I’d say at least a million
@Austin Anson thanks for the response, brother! Your channel is unimaginably helpful to someone like me just starting on their own with no mentors (was a welder/fitter in a shop for a while and competent with mig/stick and a torch)
Hell yeah man, just keep grinding. I’m here to help
@@austinanson8357Hello Austin, This is a cool video. Thanks for sharing …..Is the appropriate insurance called “welded products liability”insurance ?
I appreciate your time ! Stay safe,
Shawn
@@FIGGY65 if I recall correctly I have my General Liability Insurance and then product insurance that's is based off sales of the last year
How much do you sell those rams for ?
It changes depending on materials cost. Right now I do $275 a pair but I up it with cost right now
Is this side hustle consistent? Do you still get work?
I get work all the time now, full time and then some. This was just a good way I found to keep money consistently coming in. I still make ramps to this day. About 3-5 sets a week along with some other products.
@@austinanson8357 Wow that’s really good. Is it necessary to have liability insurance?
Definitely. You want to have yourself covered
@@austinanson8357 I appreciate it. Thank you.
U sell Five sets a day? Give me a break. Not to mention material costs.
He said 6-7 a week
But 5 sets a day is $1000/ day lol. @slumlordkennedy4608
You a hater😂
Yeah chilly Willy cam don't be hating. Hate the game player
Wastebook won't let me sell on market place unless I prove to them who I am....I'm so over this world and commerce. Great idea though.
That’s weird, If it wasn’t for marketplace I wouldn’t have a Facebook
Make a fake acct
What if I live in your area? :/
Make ‘em and sell them, I don’t care
How long have you been welding?
I ran my first bead when I was 14, that was 13 years ago. Been welding professionally since 2016 and on my own since 2020.
How much do you sell a set of ramps for and how much profit do you make after materials?
cant even get a $1 a day so.... guess I'm doing something wrong huh
How do you figure out the load capacity etc? Do you have plans you follow to build these? If so how can I get plans or do I need plans? Don’t want to make some ramps and not be able to disclose the load caps. If no plans, what are the specs for the materials your using, 3" channel x ?, 2x2x? etc etc?
I sent plans over to a engineer and he sent me back load rating. I use 3” channel for the sides. And 2” angle iron
Thank you, love the vids!@@austinanson8357
You never did say how much he sells the ramps for.
Obviously he doesn't want anybody doing the math to see how full of it he is.
Just saying
Delete this video I just got my stick and flux certs I’m about to make some bank XD
If it’s there for the taking. Take it
How much for ramp
Depends on the ramp but 200 for the lighter ones, 250 for the heavier ones custom ramps generally start at 300
Isn’t the material cost most of that? In my area it’s expensive about $2 per pound.
Yeah that’s a lot, doesn’t cost me that much. I’d have to check what the price is per pound. Where are you
@@austinanson8357 I’m in upstate New York. The prices more than doubled over the last couple of years.
Yeah they have definitely shot up a bunch here too. Put a lot of personal projects on hold for the time being
Bank? No. Lol.
how am i going 2 make money making ramps when your going 2 start selling them nation wide? every body in the world can't make a living selling ramps, if they did the world would be full of trailer ramps...
same could be said about tattoo artists but yet their still making good money
I must have missed it I don't remember him saying how many he sold for how much. Just a random total for a weekend and oh yeah everybody's got an engineering buddy to design it for you. Duh
Just saying
