    The Salimpour Approach
In the 1940s, Jamila Salimpour, a pioneering figure in the world of Middle Eastern dance, developed her innovative method for playing finger cymbals, also known as zagat. She introduced a unique numbering system to notate the rhythms, making it easier for dancers to learn and perform complex patterns. This system assigned numbers to different finger movements and cymbal strikes, providing a clear and structured approach. Jamila’s method revolutionized how finger cymbals were taught and learned, quickly gaining popularity among dancers. Today, her numbering system is widely used by dancers around the globe, continuing to influence and shape the art of belly dance. Suhaila Salimpour, her daughter, continues this rich tradition of playing finger cymbals by including them in the Salimpour School curriculum and choreographies.
