Used to have dogs, but almost 70, with bad knees, I would not appreciate someone giving me a dog now. I live in a condo and if the elevator doesn't work, six floors down to walk a dog. I hope people pay attention to the elderly they give dogs to. Not all of us can handle a puppy in our old age.
For the young kids, it can make them more responsible.
I'm 70 in a few weeks time and I live with 6 cats though luckily we live in a ground floor flat with a large garden
If you do something bad to your wife or girlfriend like cheating, get them a puppy. I have done this and she forgave me.
ACTUALLY - I ONLY FIND PUPPY SURPRISES ENJOYABLE TO WATCH WHEN IT'S FEMALES THAT ARE GETTING THE PUPPY SURPRISE - AND ESPECIALLY LITTLE GIRLS. BUT BOYS, AND ESPECIALLY GROWN MEN GETTING A PUPPY AND CRYING BECAUSE THEY'RE SO HAPPY ABOUT IT - PLEASE.

First of all, what a terrible double standard.
Second, children cry. That's what they do, no matter if it's a boy or a girl and it's cruel to tell them that's not okay. You want to know why? Because than they can't properly deal with their emotions and if it's male, they'll default to rage and the likelihood for domestic violence doubles or triples.
Third, the adults usually have had other dogs. Dogs they got as puppies and were with them for 15 years. They took care of them, they love them, they bonded with them probably more than people (dogs don't expect anything from you, they don't expect you to work your ass off so some person can sit at home on the couch doing nothing, they don't expect them to listen to their long winded boring stories, they don't dismiss them when they cry), they took care of them when they were sick, the dog was there for them when no one else was. Then they have to watch their best friend deteriorate, they have to make the tough decision to put them down when they are too sick to carry on.
So when they get a new dog, all the memories come flooding back and they probably can't help but get overwhelmed.
So don't be an asshole.
I'm going to guess that you tried owning a dog at some point and it couldn't stand you and that made you bitter and resentful. Dogs are usually great judges of character, so it looks like it was right on the money.

ALSO I'VE ALWAYS GOTTEN ALONG WITH MOST DOGS - EXCEPT THE KINDS KNOWN FOR HARMING OR ATTACKING HUMAN. AND AGAIN YOU'RE WRONG - SOME DOGS -- LIKE SOME HUMANS -- ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT JUDGING CHARACTER.
