  • I've had a few people ask about seeing a video of the Norwood sawmill pm14 milling in realtime. Here is a spruce log being milled .
For speed, there are lots of variables involved. Width of wood, type of wood, species or hard wood or softwood, length of wood, newly sharpened or dull chain, how powerful saw is, etc. I'd say maybe a minute per slab? maybe a bit more... This is not meant to be fast, it's meant to make lumber or slabs where you can't get something like a band saw or circle mill or where you're just trying to make your own lumber for fun like I do on a small scale.
    wood is #spruce
Mill is Norwood #PM14 from @Norwoodsawmills
    Chainsaw is @stihl #ms661
Chain on the chainsaw is a ripping chain from @granberginternational

Enjoyed the video. Thanks for linking me to it. The cut speed isn't much different from an Alaskan but you sure do save your back. Also eliminates the some times fussy initial first cut setup. Appreciate you.

Thanks!! I also have a couple Alaskan mills with bigger saw. The 881 with biggest bar at 64". I got this little mill to make dimensional lumber. It's a little easier than my granberg edging mill. Just having fun milling using different mills!!

Btw, what powerhead are you using? I could see a bit faster cut with a shorter bar pulling less chain.

      Stihl ms661. That bar is 28". Recommended is 20" I think. It's just what I had !

Looks easier than snapping chalk lines and free cutting with a chainsaw.

Thats 1 way for a few boards, not worth going cheap having so much wiggle, pull, and high maintenance. A cheap bandsaw mill is way, way better and not much difference between costs just after 6 months use with time spent on maintenance and setup times. Spend the extra 1 to 2 k to avoid the nightmare.

You can't bring a bandsaw mill in the middle of of no where. That's what this mill was meant for. I understand what you're saying but this is for a different purpose.

No one else is around. .am dthere is a guard for the recommend bar which I is ,20". I'm using a 28" bar so I took the guard off. I am also being careful. It would be very hard to cut yourself while your pushing from far away. But yes, accidents do happen

I will be installing it on some square cants to make it more rigid. It's perfect for milling lumber in remote locations.
