    Great video Eric, I purchased this over three months ago and it has worked flawlessly since setting it up. Regular updates are posted, and with no additional set up my nest protect sensors are available for automation by turning lights on when they sense movement and all my Google nest cameras have sound as well.

    It's really frustrating that everything is another hub! More hubs, cables, network devices, cables. Talk about a huge mess and once you start down one road it's a pain to have everything talk to one another in a different ecosystem.

    • @drdrew3
      @drdrew3 Před 3 lety

      If you buy actual HomeKit devices the hub is already built into an iPad, Apple TV or HomePod. Nest is way over priced. HomeKit thermostat only costs $85 and it’s supported and fully integrated with Apple and Siri

    This is essentially homebridge in a box, but managed by someone else. Cheaper to buy a Raspberry Pi to run Homebridge yourself, but of course it has the additional setup and maintenance hassle, so I understand the willingness to pay for the product that does it for you. However, if something is changed by Google or Apple in such a way that it breaks this integration, the DIY Homebridge setup depends on the community to update things, whereas the Starling hub depends on the company still existing and actively supporting the product. And you lose customisability with the hub, and potentially allow yet another third party to access your home and network (although I would strongly recommend having a separate IoT VLAN anyway, but that's yet another thing that needs setting up).

I’m stuck in the same situation having purchased about 1000 bucks of nest smoke detectors, cameras and doorbells before google bought it. I want to do the automation and this is kind of a kick in the face. That being said, other than being able to control the temperature with Siri, the rest is unnecessary or useless and can be messed with through the nest app.

    Hey Eric! Great video! It’s great that Starling Hub is available now. I went through the Nest Homebridge thing a couple of years ago and ended up replacing my thermo with an Ecobee specific for the Homekit integration. This MIGHT have saved me that. One question I do have which I’m not sure if you know: Does the Starling hub use Google local SDK on these Nest products? One of the things I love about Homekit is the full local control. Most of the homebridge-style integrations are using the accessory vendors Cloud APIs which means that all the traffic is going out to google’s cloud and back. ( Also means that device control would be unavailable for any devices exposed through the Starling hub ). Definitely something I’ll be watching!

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Chris! Thanks. I haven’t done a detailed investigation, but my impression from setup is that it’s just talking to Nest in the cloud. The only local part is going to HomeKit.

    So, this IS Homebridge, in a box. So Apple Homekit does not now talk to Google Nest without Homebridge. I don't like this kind of disingenuous video naming. Homebridge is great, as are Hap-NodeJS and HassIO integrations with Homekit. They're easier to achieve than most people realise.

    Apple Hometkit and Google Nest can now talk to each other without homebridge....by buying this $90 device running homebridge. What a complete waste of time.

      G Conger what are you serious? What plugging do I need for it to work? And take advantage of all the features. Because so far I only have nest thermostat and protect. I still need to intrigarte my nest secure.

      @Mr.Tec01 Před 4 lety

      Santos Del Moral Hoobs.org is homebridge in a box, anything you want connected to homekit, hoobs can do...it does the same thing original video does but includes basically everything not just nest...for example with hoobs you can connect all of ring security with homekit, cameras, doorbell, sensors the whole package....it’s amazing

    • @santosalberto
      @santosalberto Před 4 lety

      G Conger I get what it does. I have HOOBS 3 running on a raspberry pi4 and I have the nest plunging that is supposed to be certified with HOOBS. However like I said before I only get the thermostat and nest protect. My question is in regards to getting all the other nest products working like starling home hub? They even have the nest secure working. With that feature I can activate my alarm when I leave home using Siri.
