If they're honest, most people would quite like the idea of an Italian sportscar. Blasting through the Tuscan hills or cruising the Amalfi coast road with a significant other in the passenger's berth, what could be better than something stylish, charismatic and, most likely, red? The problem is that the reality of Italian sportscar ownership doesn't always tally with the dream. With its 2007 Spider, Alfa Romeo was intent on building a roadster that was captivating without an ownership experience that felt like a period of prolonged captivity.

Being a 939 Spider owner I'd say this was a pretty fair review. If you're looking for a Spider THE single biggest issue is the roof which can be troublesome and costly to sort out. They look much better in real life and super rare.

Yes - agreed that the fabric roof has typically Italian complexity. However, there are now proven specialists (like WAD Alfa - Wolverhampton - UK) who can refurbish the now unobtainable roof ECU's. All the other motor parts etc are still available new. I am fortunate to own alfa spiders from each decade since the Giulietta and I would agree that the 939 is an excellent modern version and as presenter Jonathan Crouch points out it is a good 'contemporary' offer. Certainly a car that does great justice to the Pininfarina design house and this is a nice film which does fair justice to this model.

It's the only car (and I've owned a fair few - Ferraris, Masers etc included) that I have to turn around and take a look as I walk away. No other car has had that effect on me ! Everything on these is doable however it's best to be as hands on as possible otherwise 'specialists' can present some very hefty bills for, what can be, simple jobs. What engine model do you have Johnny ?

Its a Webasto hood, from Germany and maybe a reason that it is screwed together so well is because it was built in the Pininfarina factory.
It was an honest review, but missed a couple of plusses. Its true its not a fast or quick car, you should be looking at an Elise if thats what you want. It is rather a tourer, great for continental touring holidays, as I can attest. Compare the size of the boot and storage space in the 939 Spider to that of a Merc SLK.

@@Lee_Pitcher Lee - good point and yes I recall seeing another spider on the autoroute in France being driven by a charming French lady and it was fascinating to see how it looked from the other side of the screen. That said - I'll be honest I have a 166 as well and that has the same effect. Ah. Alfas.

Lee - I agree it is a lovely Pinifarina design and apologies I should have said what engine - sadly, I went for the 2.4 Jtdm which is an horrendous crime for an Alfa owner I know, but it was recommended to me as the best engine and I wanted Alfa looks with decent fuel consumption. I do get that - up to 40mpg. I have two 166's and always felt they looked beautiful when turning around to look back, but I must admit this car is fast becoming my go-to model, Cheers, Johnny

This for me has always been one of the most beautiful cars. I'd love one but having owned alfa before and enjoin I have to say I worry about the reliability of it as a daily driver.

I’d trade in my Giulietta for the looks alone.

Have to admit with the near useless back seats of the brera I think the 2 seat spider is the better option. Both great looking cars but the spider does seem to be a more balanced design. Giugiaro front end and Pininfarina rear. I’m a big fan of the weird 916 wedge shape which I think looks better and better over time but these 939s are starting to do the same.

The 159, Brera and the spider should've been RWD from the start...

The Brera or Spider are the only two cars that could make me sell my Alfa Mito 1.4 Turbo.
But, unfortunately, keeping them insured every year is 600€ alone.
