    Incredible work! for a ship that caught the admiration of my granddad whose he saw coming in the Montevideo port just after the Battle!, this emotions when he saw the german Captain and his sailors going down the ship carrying the casualties in their whites uniforms, moslty not older than 18 years old, and later the descition that he took giveng his life and his ship, assuming all the blame without loosing the honor and lifes of the crew was an incredible act of bravery! well remembered with this piece of work, congrats!

    Probably the most Legendary Ship of WWII. Langsdorf is considered a hero by all countries. He saved thousands of lives including British Sailors. Merchant and Military Sailors such as my dad who was in the U.S. Navy during the war. He spent two years on a Destroyer in the Atlantic and two years on a PT Boat in the Pacific. As a young child I watched the Movie about the Admiral Graf Spee with my dad. When the Langsdorff scuttled the beautiful but tough ship my dad had tears in his eyes. I asked him why are you crying? He said what Langsdorff did took more courage than if he had come out fighting. He said son I saw many a ship go under and I can't explain the terrible feeling you get even if it is your enemy. Langsdorff sunk 9 to 10 Merchant Ships without one life being taken. He didn't treat his prisoners like the enemy. Langsdorff through a Christmas Party for his prisoners and he let them walk freely on deck. He even made friends of them. Ask the children of the men on those ships and the men on the Ajax and Achilles if Langsdorff is a hero?

    • @donalddemo
      @donalddemo Před rokem +1

      Langsdorf should have fought his way out of harms way and at least tried to make it home

    • @kurtsherrick2066
      @kurtsherrick2066 Před rokem

      @Donald DiMiceli I have often thought about that as many have. The Spee's Fuel System was damaged and it could only sail about 12 Knotts. Langsdorf probably could have took out a ship. But it was a suicide mission. The Spee couldn't out sail the British Fleet damaged like the ship was. What I understand she took about 60 hits and still was floating. In its day the Spee was a Marvel

    • @donalddemo
      @donalddemo Před rokem

      @@kurtsherrick2066 it’s water storage system, and galleys were fucked up. She was low on ammunition. Still, Exeter and Ajax would have been pummeled and unable to follow if not sunk. He bought the British bullshit that the whole Navy laid in waiting.

    • @kurtsherrick2066
      @kurtsherrick2066 Před rokem

      @Donald DiMiceli Everything you said is true. Yes Langsdorff was fooled thinking a big Fleet had shown up. The Spee could have sunk the Exeter. The Spee took it out of the battle. You may be right about the Spee possibility taking out the Ajax and Achilles. But it would have probably been impossible to make it to a Safe Port especially Germany without being sunk. Langsdorff may have tried it if he wasn't fooled. Langsdorff wasn't a NAZI. He was a good man stuck in a terrible situation. I can't think of the Merchant Ship Captain that broke his word to Langsdorff and sent out the location of the Admiral Graf Spee. That was the one man Langsdorff should have maybe Court Marshalled. One thing a Captain or Military Officer should never do is break his word. It was a dishonorable thing to do.

    My dad built ships in the Bottle and man it takes a lot of love. He did the ships like Old Ironsides and Cutty Shark. He was a sailor in the U.S. Navy in WWll. He loved the Graf Spee mainly I believe for Langsdorff and his love of life for his men and the enemy. The detail of model ships and making things from scratch is a art only a few can have the patience to build. Thank you for the video it made me think about my dad.

    This is inspirational. Looking at the detail around each superstructure is something you only get with ships. I've tried building ships in 1/700 but I always end up ruining the kit in one way or another. I've got a 1/350 destroyer that I know I can at least complete without Fing it up majorly. I've watched your Graf Spee vids and will use some of the techniques you've showed. Thanks for sharing this build!

    Guido, I just finished watching the whole series...I think lol. I've been building models, dioramas and doing miniatures for about 52 years. I have to say that yours is some of, if not the best work I've ever seen done on a modern naval vessel in that scale. I was completely blown away by the level of details you insisted on. The deck, the rigging....the way you did the damned water was even a work of art. And all of that despite a horrific accident. I've never seen better craftsmanship or results man. It's simply a masterpiece in my opinion. Thanks so much for sharing the build and so many of your techniques with us. In the end, the slide show damned near looked like impossibly good photos of the real subject.

    • @bilk1968
      @bilk1968  Před 8 lety

      As I mostly use no name products, I would encourage you to spend your money wisely and, if you are starting out, invest in a Iwata Neo and a silent compressor in the 150$ area. It does not have to have an air tank, if you do not plan to build high gloss varnishes (in that case the compressor should have a tank). Ships have mostly uniform surfaces so the nozzle should be either .5 or .3mm nozzle. That is what I use most times.

    Hi, Guido, thank you for the post, a splendid work, so reallistic. Just a curiosity: do you know anything about the "platform" just above the two port 5.9 inch guns, beside the motorboat deck ??? Thank you for your attention.

    • @bilk1968
      @bilk1968  Před 8 lety +1

      +Renato Camurça Thank you for your kind words, Renato! That "platform" seems to be some kind of crane. I have checked a number of books, while I was building GS, but couldn't find out. By construction I think that this crane was to hold a refueling line, but I would not bet my life on it. Thanks again for stopping by and watching!

      +Guido “Tailor” Hopp Thank you for the answer, Guido, I'll try to find out the complement of your comments, that enlight this question. GS history is particularly interesting and many things need more research, for instance, the quantity of ammunition was remaining after the battle. According to Eugene Millington-Drake and many authors the ship had 186 shells of 11 (from a total of 620). According to M. J. Whitley, who mentions the "Kay Report" (Walther Kay, the GS First Official) the pocket battleship had 306 shells of 11 inch, half of 5.9 inch ... Many thanks.

    Love how you did a early Graf Spee. I just got the Trumpeter 1/350 Graf Spee, and I was going to convert it to a early version of her sister ship Admiral Scheer. I was wondering where you got the early German float plane from since all I can find is the older Arado 196. Also how did you get the search lights from the center of tower with a single to a double on each side as that was what was on the Admiral Scheer. Any comment would be greatly appricated, love watching you build this Spanish Civil War Admiral Graf Spee.

    • @bilk1968
      @bilk1968  Před 7 lety

      Hello, Micah!
      Thank you very much for watching and your kind comment! :)
      The Heinkel He-60 I converted using the Arado in the kit. The fuselage is basically just turned up-side down, the rudder cut off and put on the top. Cockpits just drilled out by hand. Some modification of the engine compartment is need, too. If you picture-google He-60 you can find a nice and simple line drawing of the He-60, which I (scaled up/down to 1/350) used to make templates for the wings and tailplanes. The struts etc. are from the PE spares box.
      The platforms for the searchlights are included in the White Ensign photo etch set for the AGS, luckily.
      The lower platforms on the formast need modifaction, too, but in Scheer this should be a bit easier than on the AGS (depending on time frame).
      I hope this helps! Good luck with your project! If you need further support, please let me know. I'll be glad to help, if I can.
      Cheers,
      Guido

      Guido Hopp Thanks for the help full comment, I'll probably do just that with the aircraft since I have a spare one from the Trumpeter 1/350 Prinz Eugen. With the tower's two search lights I'll be using photech and left over plastic from last build Tamiya's 1/350 Bismarck. I am very appreciative of comment, and I'll ask for more in the near future of Admiral Scheer.

    • @bilk1968
      @bilk1968  Před 9 lety

      Butch Einsel Hi, Butch! I can't recall when I actually did that. Vertical and horizontal rigging are usually just done by using a tiny drop of CA. make the horizontal first. Then attach the vertical to the intended deck/bulkhead spot and let dry well. The vertical should have a comfortable length so you can easily manouver the line to the attaching point on the horizontal. Choose the proper spot for connecting both and put some glue down on the horizontal. attach the vertical with as little tension on the yarn as possible. Let is dry and cut off the excess carefully with sharp scissors. Make a "condensor" by blackening white glue with acrylic paint and apply to the connenction point: Ta-Ta! Finished!

      +Faron Adams Hello, Faron and Thanks for your kkind comment.
      There are a great many choices to pick from, really. 10 Years ago it would have been fairly easy to recommend a 1/350 scale kit as we had very few choices. Today it is really tough to say. Maybe you can tell me what era or type of ship you find most appealing? I any case, if you want to avoid parts monsters, accuracy issues and fit problems, you might want to stear clear from a lot of the Trumpeter kits.

      Not that the Trumpi kits are unbuildable, but especially in ships Trumpi tend to be of dodgy quality. The overall outcome is very depending on the design team assigned to the kit. They can be hit or miss.
      Best money value these days you get from Academy. You are building their Perry so you get the idea. Lot's of bang for the buck and generally not bad kits at all. Don't try their older batlleships though (Bismarck and Tirpitz), they are pretty poor. I am now buildíng Pitroad's 1/350 Sugashima modern mine sweeper. Beautitul small kit! One of the best I ever build. The price of these varies widely. They can be as cheap as 40USD shipped and can go up to 75USD (which is way over the top).
