Hello Bob from North Carolina. It was because of me going to see the Monkees in '68 here in NC that I discovered Jimi Hendrix who opened up for them! After seeing Jimi he changed the course of my life because I knew then that I wanted to learn to play the guitar which I have been doing now for 57 years.

That would have been the first part (I want to say he did 14 shows, but I'm not positive on that) of the 1967 US Tour. He walked off stage at that last show as the opener in '67 and never went back.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE MONKEES ❤ And yes! They were a real band. Peter was very underestimated. Everyone expected him to be his character. Which he was not. He even spent some time teaching I heard.
Would you consider doing individual videos on each of the other 3 Monkees?
    This probably won't do well, but I can dream. 😂 THANKS BOB 😊 🙏 🤗 ❤

A while back, I read something that said when the Monkees were not allowed to play their own instruments but Nesmith had it in his contract that he could produce some of his own songs, he would sometimes sneak Peter in to the studio to do some of the instrumentation.

Even Nesmith later said he thought they'd made a big mistake by putting Peter on bass and Mike on guitar, as Peter was the superior guitarist. Having seen them both with and without Nesmith, he was certainly correct. I saw them in Denver on July 4, 1989 at Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre, when Mike was having nothing to do with Monkees tours, and was absolutely blown away by Peter, who I believe was using primarily a red Strat as his main guitar. I later saw them (The Mike & Mickey Show) on June 12, 2018 at the Paramount Theater in Denver, and by then Mike's already modest guitar skills were leaving him. But if you watch some of Mike's solo live stuff, "Live at the Britt" and such, he never could really compete with Peter.

You saw them five days before I did in 1989! (Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, performing with Nez on board for the last hour.) Even after almost 35 years, I still say it was the best concert I ever attended. And the crowd energy was atomic! I thought the roof of the amphitheatre might blow clear off when Mike walked out to join the show.

Thanks to my older siblings, I was a Monkee fan before the comeback. Peter was underused, especially on the early albums. Mike got to produce songs he wrote and included Peter among the musicians. The dumb persona on the show was completely unlike the real Peter.
He was into folk before the Monkees. Stephen Stills recommended him for the show. His own audition failed due to a receding hairline and bad teeth. The two looked alike. Peter left the group after Head and the TV special. I sure wish he'd stayed longer. His time after the Monkees included a brief jail term for drug possession and stint as a private school teacher.
The Monkees should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while all still with us. How many current members used the same studio musicians? Mike deserves a solo induction for his work in music video.
I was recently reading All The Leaves Are Brown, a biography of the Mamas and Papas. It noted John Phillips and producer Lou Adler's invention in the Monterrey festival. They purposely didn't invite the Monkees. But Micky and Peter attended, even introducing some acts. During the Grateful Dead's performance, Peter tried to calm down the crowd. This was due to a rumor of the Beatles being there. One member of the Dead took issue with this interruption. When the Monkees went on tour again, they invited a group from the festival to be their opening act. It was led by some guitar player named Jimi Hendrix.

They ARE recognized by actual musicians. Yes, they used the Wrecking Crew--So did the Beach Boys, and everyone else.
As for Peter's vocals, who could have possibly done a better job on "Auntie Grizelda?"

I liked the Monkees and Peter was my favorite. They had very catchy tunes that they sang but generally did not write or play the instruments on. On tours, they had backing musicians that carried the majority of the musical load, but the did tour.
