How to replace a Lamp Holder

- In this video I will show you How to replace a lamp holder. Replacing a broken lamp holder is a relatively simple task that requires very little experience, but you need to be competent in carrying out this task. The only tool that you need is a screwdriver.
All electrical circuit work should be carried out by competent persons and in accordance with any regulations. If you are in any doubt do contact a qualified electrician before carrying out any work.
Always turn off the mains or switch off the power at the consumer unit. It is also a good idea to put up a sign on the service panel so that nobody turns the main switch ON by accident.
Steps :
1. Carefully unscrew the back of the old lamp holder to expose the wire terminations.
2. Remove the wires by unscrewing from the terminals
3. Straighten each wire end and twist the stranded wires clockwise.
4. Get the new lamp holder
5. Unscrew the fitting
6. Loosen each screw on the mounting base.
7. Reconnect the new lamp holder by screwing the wires back into the terminals.
8. Install a light bulb and test the new lamp holder.

I was replacing a really old lamp holder and I couldn't figure out which slot (conductor) was for the live wire and which one for the neutral wire. After some research, there is apparently an old British convention that the neutral slot will have some ridges in them. So the blue wire goes to the slot with ridges and brown wire goes to the slot that's smooth. I hope this tip comes in handy for someone 😊

The earliest examples of quick-release/connect uses pipe-screw concept/theories and clamp washer/plates theories. Forces are seperated by shroud/bulb-holder/stem/stand/...
Screw clamping top-bottom, cheap useful and secure, same as military signals (many types of expensive)connectors

Is the wire interchangeable? Doesn't matter either side right?
The top half doesn’t seem to come loose on mine to expose the wires only the bottom half which doesn’t expose anything

@@Renvaar1989Might not be threaded on the top half, and need prying off with a flat screwdriver instead.
Does it tell you which wire goes into which connection on the new lampholder?
It doesn’t have a “polarity” so the two terminals in the lamp holder are interchangeable.
Where do you connect the earth wire?
The number and placement of screws can vary depending on the design and manufacturer of the bulb holder. Some bulb holders don't have an earth connection, while others do. The holder shown in this video doesn't have an earth connection. I’ve also uploaded a video about how to replace a bulb holder that does have an earth connection.
