  • CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE HAS A BIG PROBLEM.
Carnival cruise Line is trying had to change it's image from the cheap cruise line to the fun cruise line. However when brawls break out on a Carnival ship it erases all the good the cruise line has done and paints a picture of rowdy drunk passengers. They need to be more proactive on their ships with perhaps more security in places like bars at night and pool decks during the day so they can stop things before they get out of hand. Until then these brawls will keep happening and the talk starts all over again on them being the cheap cruise oine.

Things I disagree with: people are choosing bad behavior everywhere. Not just on (carnival) cruises but at resorts, airplanes, theme parks, malls, churches, EVERYWHERE. Decorum and thinking before you act is a rare thing now.

The only viable solution here is to remove offenders from the ship at the nearest U.S. port of call, ban them from the cruise line in perpetuity and fine them for contravening the safety of crew and other passengers. All three. Period.

However, in my several cruises on NCL I don't recall a day going by where I didn't see a member of the security team somewhere on the ship, several times a day, yet the ship doesn't feel like a "prison ship". If anything, the limits make it worse. On either line for me I look at the break even on the drink plan cost. A few alcoholic drinks, sodas, speciality coffee, etc. Not much in the way of alcohol and you break even. Too many people think 'I bought 15 drinks so that's my goal to get my money's worth'. They got into a shouting match, they were drunk, it got ugly. I was flabbergasted. The next cruise we did on Carnival 2 years later, once again due to sitting at the wrong place at wrong time, another fight. This was a group, they were all drunk. I went on one other Carnival cruise in 2006 because I won it in a contest. Unfortunately, I was done with Carnival at that point. We have done 17 RC cruises since then and I have yet to see a fight (not sure if there was one but I was no where near it if so). Carnival will always be known as the section 8 cruise line, Walmart cruise line, Waffle House cruise line, dollar general cruise line until they stop advertising to a lower clientele. We cruise twice a year sometimes three if our schedule allows, We are platinum members on carnival and diamond plus on Royal as long as carnival continues allowing these animals to sail 2026 will be our last cruise with carnival and we’ll simply sail Royal. But not only that, a coordination between regular staff and security to alert them quickly if someone is getting too loud and agressive to have security approach that person early and remove them and talk with them , escort them to a certain area or evaluate their drunk level. All staff has to have eyes and ears and communication with trained security. Disney theme parks spend a lot of extra $ on this, but it’s impressive how they handle unruly guests. It’s mostly behind the scenes: cast member send an alert, camera people see who are the aggressors, security is rushing to area preventing serious situations. Trained security are high priced but well worth it. Also bar staff has to have the strength to not serve people who appear over served.

I will say, I've been on two Carnival's in the last few years. One pre-dogs, one post. Didn't see a fight on either, but on the post dog cruise there was a night where someone started getting loud and aggressive and security appeared really fast, talked to him, and he chilled out and moved on. So maybe some ships and crews are handling it better than others, but the problem is it only takes one with everyone having cameras to film and share it.
How many of these fights have happened verses how many cruises sail daily? I suspect it's still a pretty rare thing, just more visible with modern technology in everyone's pockets.

Carnival is making a mistake by trying to copy RCCL. Carnival does quite a few things better than most cruise lines. They should stick with them. A beautiful ship does not guarantee that the cruise line will be able to give a good cruise. Patrolling the ship is a good idea.

Here's a problem some people don't realize. My son works for WDW security. He is not allowed to do anything except observe and report....as much as he is physically capable of intervening. CCL & all the cruise lines need the equivalent of a "No Fly ( Cruise) List" that is recorded by EVERY cruise line.

It may be 60% of of the cruise industry but you also have to do the math on how many ships vs. the other cruise lines have. I’ve been on over 20 CCL cruises. I have never seen a fight. I’ve seen many “gang” gaggles and troublemakers cruising together but I’ve seen the same o other cruise lines as well. But you are correct. anyone who is assaulted or starts a riot on a ship needs to have charges brought up as well. The 5 day and under cruises on all the ships are nothing but a glorified drunk fest especially for first time cruisers and those not about to grow up and act accordingly. Banning is not enough.

As I was approaching my cabin, I saw people with their heads stuck out of their cabins and then I heard the arguing. I walked right up on it. It lasted over 30 minutes and I never saw security. Being stuck on a ship that needs security staff to manage drunks and aggressive travellers is not vacation money well spent. Food was very good, staff was friendly and efficient, and we had a great time. We were conscious of the negative press that Carnival has been getting lately when we boarded, but we had a great time and will gladly sail with Carnival again. Just our two cents....

Glad you had a good time. Just so you know, if you take a shorter 3-4 night sailing on carnival, that is where you are more likely to see a fight break out. Those cruises attract a weekend warrior type.
I very much enjoy sailing carnival though.
